This is still bugging me - I already asked it, but it's a couple pages ago now. Why couldn't Richard just be Jacob's replacement?

I'm going to guess Richard already took on the role as the 'right hand man' for Jacob and as such wasn't going to be able to take on as the one to be the 'protector'. His path was set so to speak.

Just got back from the Times Talk Live: Lost interview with Damon and Carlton. They were really funny and there was a lot of good discussion/dodging of questions. They showed a finale clip at the end.

It's crazy how good LOST looks projected.

Which is why my HD box will be in the 'Hatch' (my basement) for the finale. 100" of projected HD epicness!!!!!! (not the same as a theatre but still, I'm excited!!!)

Mostly it was sort of academic discussion about themes and what we've seen, but a few small hints / spoilers about the finale:

Damon said there is a noteworthy Star Wars ref within the first 7 minutes of the finale.
He was shushed by Carlton, who later revealed that Walt would be seen in the final. Damon: "I get yelled at for mentioning the SW reference and then you drop the Walt Bomb?!"

Michael Emerson and Jorge Garcia showed up. Emerson was asked who he enjoyed working with the most. He said he recently worked with Jorge quite a bit. He said " you wouldn't think our characters would have much to do with each other but perhaps fate has a plan...." (paraphrasing)

The scene they showed dealt with Locke/MIB and Ben discovering that Desmond is no longer in the well. Sawyer gets caught spying on them and admits he was there to rescue Des but obviously someone beat them to it. Locke refers to Sawyer and friends as "Jacob's little candidates" and Sawyer says they're not candidates anymore. He steals Ben's gun and heads off.
Locke looks down and sees something on the ground near the well. He says " I think a dog was here" and we pan down to see paw prints in the dirt.
Best part of the scene - Sawyer actually calls Smokey "Smokey."

Damon suggests anyone trying to avoid big spoilers should try not to look at the actor credits along the bottom of the screen at the start of the finale.

Though they did not give actors answers ahead of time, while present for the filming of a scene for the finale D & C offered to explain anything to the cast if they had questions. Garcia joked "Why start now?" but when Damon asked him on stage why he didn't ask any questions he thought about it for a moment and said "because I think I got it" to the obvious relief of Damon.
