I thought while I was around I would answer this question...I sculpted the Portrait (see my website) and a new set of boots for the Boromir statue while I was working in New Zealand at Weta. While I was there I also sculpted the figures for the "No Admitance" book ends and a portrait of another statue which has never been released.
Good question and thanks for letting me answer.:D

Oluf what was the character never released??????

Yeah, I heard they had at one point and I believe the reason was Richard Taylore wanted a more heroic version of Pippin.

If they make a heroic pippin, he better be in gondor gear, i don't want to see him in hobbit clothes.

I remember Daniel Falconer said that by the time the "Pippin in hobbit cloths" project was finished, the next movie was out in the theatres, making the hobbit cloths version of Pippin a bit superfluous. That's why they did a new Pippin in the Gondorian outfit. I would have preferred Pippin in his hobbit gear. The Gondorian outfit ain't bad, but I really dislike the pose.
There is something that bugs me about that part of the movie also. I'm missing to much of Pippins 'adventures' in Gondor, and the Battle of Pelennor Fields aftermath (The Houses of Healing).

We began to do a Pippin in an FOTR pose and outfit, but it just didn't work. These things take a long time to do, from start to finish, so by the time we came round to redoing it, ROTK was out and it made sense to redo him in a pose and costume from that movie instead. The ROTK one is waaaay better than our other proto. Trust me. I would have loved to see a FOTR Pip too, but the license ran out before we could go there again. There's only so much poly you can release in a given window. I really wish we could have done more too, but I'm proud of those we did make. We make a lot of protos of figures and some only get so far. I mentioned Pip because that's one I know people always scratched their heads about. There are so many factors that must be considered when making a new piece and many people have their say, including SS and NL. We only produce the very best pieces that we proto up.

I do find it some what amusing that they chose Gondor Pippen to be more "heroic," yet the version we have shows him withering in terror. Still a great figure though. I would have liked to see the FOTR version, but oh well, c'est trop dommage, or too bad, or whatever other language you prefer.

Still, I want my 1/6 Faramir!!!

I wonder what else they made into a proto... Would be cool if there were more photo's of proto's like the one we saw of Galadriel recently.
