you're being a little unfair there, the discussion was about the length of the forearms, not the nude figure as a whole.
And they were right, forearms are supposed to be the same length as the upper arm. It's a basic human anatomy thing... and so using that thinking... the ken doll was indeed better, as it had the correct length forearms.
I'm not saying the ken doll IS a better figure, that would be mad... but then, neither were they over at the RS forums. But then you'd know that if you bothered to read it?
(oh and if you want to learn a little about 1/6 scale figures, I suggest to go to some dedicated 1/6 forums where every figure manufacaturer is discussed, not just Sideshow, along with fabulously intricate customs.... )
I did "bother to read it", thank you very much. I understand the argument over human anatomy and the length of the forearms being the point of concern. I also understand that, anatomically correct (Ken?) or not, there is no respectable way to compare a Ken body, which has six points of articulation (less than most modern 4" figures), hands to small to hold anything but Barbies purse, an inability to stand on his own or hold any pose except "Mr. Roboto," with the Sideshow body, which has over 30 points of articulation, can hold just about any pose, and has detailed hands that can hold just about
anything! I take issue with the RS thread in terms of the general lack of perspective that seems to run rampant on those forums. The fact is, and I am aware of just about EVERY 1/6 scale body on the market (thanks again), the Sideshow body is the most "bang-for-your-buck" armature on the market today, and all this niggling over what amounts to a tiny problem with a superb body is laughable when you compare it to the ridiculous body-types we as collectors have been subjected to in the past. Or do I have to remind you of the first bodies that Hasbro gave us for their Star Wars line. The ones that couldn't even hold a lightsaber with both hands, never mind getting a finger through a trigger, or legs in a kneeling, or even a sitting position.
Or the newer Hasbro bodies, which never account for the actual height of the character (Dooku was shorter than Luke!), had arms that were actually too short, and limbs that couldn't bend past 85 degrees.
And the reason, I believe, that there is no thread discussing every 1/6 body under the sun is because this is SIDESHOW FREAKS!!! We generally prefer Sideshow bodies over others. And rightly so.
There's no context in which comparing a Ken doll favorably against a Sideshow figure of any type can be considered anything but laughable, and it just shows how stupid some people are about this hobby. If anyone out there would like your Luke transfered to a Ken body, just let me know! I'll be glad to do it for you!!
I've been customizing 1/6 scale for over 10 years. I've seen every body that comes down the pike, both the Japanese custom-builds, and the cheapest of cheap knock-offs, and I can honestly say that of all these, the best for the money has always been Sideshow.
I think it'd be loverly if every figure could have a gorgeous Volks body underneath, but I'd also like to be able to pay the rent. Personally, I'm excited at the prospect of the shorter male body for some figures. I think it adds to the realism and depth of the line, and it's a relatively new concept that Sideshow, more than any other company, has taken and run with it. They're giving us several different body-types to choose from, and that's a wonderful thing that they certainly don't have to do to sell figures.
While they're complaining about anatomy, why don't they mention that Sideshow neglected to give Luke a penis? He almost certainly has one! He did father a child after all! I mean, my God, the crotch area lacks any definition whatsoever. At lest Ken has some sculpted tighty-whiteys! Why not Luke? What a travesty!
