Amazing that only 13 years ago a payroll of about 53 million was considered buying it.
For comparisons sake the Yankees shockingly had the highest payroll in 1997 with about 74 million.Hooray for the Rays winning., but they better seal the deal or they just ____ed up the match-ups for the Rangers in the ALCS.

Yeah, I don't care if they lose now. I just wanted them to put up a fight. I feel bad for a guy I know from Tampa. He grew up in Texas, and he flew back for these two games only to watch them lose.
After all the trash talking he was doing during the first two games he's been awfully quiet since yesterday.

While I understand the comparison, saying that the Marlins "bought a WS title" is extremely retarded.
The Marlins broke the team up because they had an owner is Huizeinga who couldn't care less about the sport of baseball, and - like most businesses - only cared about profiting(which he did).
Both in 97 and 03 the Marlins were stripped. Doing that in South Florida, with the kind of fickle fans that exist here, is a death sentence.
Hopefully, the new ballpark will equal some more spending between Sampson and Loria, but I doubt it. Those two idiots simply do not open the wallets for players. Never have, never will. The fans know this, and found out about how the team was lying in regards to their yearly profits.

They have a fancy new ballpark. They should have revenues coming in from all sides. The woe is me stuff from professional sports team owners is ludicrous. You don't need to spend 200 million a year, but at least put a competitive team on the field.
Mauer is a great player. He didn't have the same season he did last year but he's worth the money.

sorry but he's overrated. they could have used all that money to put together some starting pitchers who can actually throw strike outs. i'd rather they spend that money on several "pretty good" players than to blow it all on one all-star.

He is a damn good catcher, but maybe this year statistically was a regression to his norm rather than last year's MVP performance.
He was pretty banged up all year. Back problems and Knee problems. That's something fans should be worried about more than anything.
Its like with the Cards. They've got Pujols through next year but they need to resign him and give him basically as much as it takes.

you guys can have mauer if you give us 2 mediocre pitchers who can ring up at least 4-5 K's per game. cuz right now we got a bunch of groundball pitchers who can't pitch for ____. the twins should have gone after a decent starter like everybody thought they would. instead we get a 3rd closer.
I'd take him a heartbeat. Anybody willing to give him away just makes me question how much they really know about baseball. Not trying to be rude but you don't come across catchers like him very often. As far as pitchers you want guys who get a lot of groundballs. Those don't end up as souvenirs.

it'd be great if they actually pitched into groundball outs. unfortunately i can't count on my fingers how many times Slowey had a 5+ run 1st inning this year. it was sickening. makes me question how pitchers like this even make it to the majors and are allowed to stay.
and sure Mauer is good but like i said, the Twins put so much money and effort to keep him to make the fans happy and it doesn't leave any resources left to flesh out the rest of the team. One guy can't carry an entire team. the twins have been slowly building for the last 10 years after they finally shook out of their 90's slump. they should be ready to make a run by now but instead they get swept in the divsional series year after year after year.
Slowey and Liriano are good young pitchers. They will be just fine. The twins are gonna have to spend some money to really push things. They try to do things on the cheap and its not gonna work.

. I thought they were done for, but good thing Atl has the worst 2B in the league. Atl got lucky in game 2, and SF got lucky today.
