I'm talking overall worst collapse. When you hold the division lead for most of the year and going into September then manage to not only lose the division lead but not even make the post season :lol, that's worse imo than dropping a few games in a row in a short series to a team that went on fire and won the whole thing. Neither are pretty that's for sure :lecture

I was having this exact debate this morning with a Yankee fan. I'm trying to be objective, but I don't think it's close. 2004 was far worse. I have no doubt that NY would've steamrolled St. Louis if they reached the WS. So basically they had to win one out of four games to earn another ring and they couldn't do it.

Meanwhile, while Boston's collapse was epic, all they could've done is become one of eight teams in the playoffs, with a pretty reasonable chance of not even making it to the ALCS.

Not to mention the whole 2004 choke was against their most hated rival, after 86 years of futility, right after swooping in and stealing ARod from the Sox during the offseason, in their own stadium, on national tv, and it had never happened in the history of MLB.

You're assuming that NY goes on to steamroll the Cards here, something we'll never know. The '04 collapse was awful but in the end the Yankees lost to the eventual World Series Champions. Not really anything to be ashamed about in the long run.

As for this Boston collapse, they were pretty much everyone's pick to be the AL representative in the WS this year, while Philly was picked by most to represent the NL. Their off season spending spree on AGON, Crawford & Lackey only adds to the weight of the collapse. And leading the division pretty much all year into September only to choke it away and get knocked out of October baseball is just...wow.

We'll probably never agree but that's part of the rivalry :)

True enough. Let's hope for the best playoffs possible. Maybe they can be as exciting and nerve wracking as last night proved to be.:duff

Amen to that. :peace

I never thought this years NYY team would win a championship, our SP on paper is shaky outside of CC. I would like to see a NYY and Philly rematch though, that would give some juice to the sport I think.

As I said I'm a fan of my teams and I claim the titles, bad seasons, etc that come with them. If others don't agree thats fine but I'm not a fan of those teams for you I'm a fan for me.

For the playoffs I'm rooting for the Cards and Tigers.

I'll root for the Cards, but there's no way as a Indians fan will I root for the Tigers.

Tampa!!

As an Indians and Rockies fan I agree, rooting against the Tigers and D-backs

NYY and Phillies have been there so often of late (and philly fans are obnoxious) so I'd rather not seem them.

So some combination of Rays or Rangers vs Cardinals or Brewers if I really had to choose.

Wow Boston is going to let Francona go? What a terrible, terrible decision!

:rotfl

I'm not a fan of the decision, but it seems he wants out too. According to one local reporter Francona told the owners he didn't want his option picked up back in early September.

The rumors are already spreading that he's heading to the White Sox.

Wow. Yes I heard that Chisox rumor as well.

I just can't believe they would pin the failures of this team over the last 3 years on him. The pitching has been atrocious, can't blame the manager for lack of performance by over paid players.

The end of an era. :monkey1

Perhaps, perhaps not.

Seriously, what an awful decision. Fire the guy who brought you 2 championships in recent years.

Hey John Henry and Theo Epstein, pull up a mirror you clowns.

I think Theo wanted him to stay. He supposedly kept pushing for everyone to wait until the weekend was over to think things over.

I blame Henry, Werner, and Lucchino. The three stooges have been too busy with other interests whether it be Nascar, Liverpool FC, or stupid promotions at Fenway as of late. The crown jewel of their empire is just in a world of ____ right now.:ohbfrank:

After slashing the payroll with trades and free agent defections, the Rays payroll is $40 million.

And now they have another young, stud pitcher in Matt Moore.

I hope these guys win it all! :rock

Also Verlander vs. Sabathia tonight. Doesn't get much better than that.

I hope the Tigers smoke them. :rock

Regarding Yanks:

"I will not sacrifice our principles. We've made too many compromises already, too many retreats. They invade our space, and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds, and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far and no further! And I will make them pay for what they've done!"
