depends on how big your payroll is. Baseball is a market share league. Meaning some organizations are just fine with losing because they make so much money from the league. There are always going to be 3 or so franchises that spend twice as much money as the rest. Sometimes it pays off and sometimes it doesn't.
You do have to remember one thing about the Yankees. They have enormous TV and radio contracts worth $100s of millions. I will always give the Yankees ownership credit for spending that money on players. Most baseball owners would pocket the cash.
My Minnesota Twins have the richest owner in baseball and a new ballpark. At least we have a $115 million dollar payroll which ranks 8th in baseball. But us fans in the Twin Cities know they could easily raise it to $130 million. They won't do it.
