Re: The Man of Steel

That clip when Pa Kent says maybe could be a response to something else he may have said. Either way it didn't bother me knowing I don't the whole conversation.

Re: The Man of Steel

I think Nam is right on that Superman should be a boy scout, idealist and maybe a bit naive. The character is 70 years old and and doesn't need to be updated to work in today's world. Quite the opposite if anything.

The character definitely needed to be updated. Ive been a superman fan for years and I love what they're doing with the character. The darker more serious tone will work great. He doesn't need to be the ole' goody two shoes "magoo" Superman anymore.

That's a fine line. Superman doesn't need to be Batman either. :nono

Re: The Man of Steel

There's a difference between making him believable and compromising his character.

I've never thought of him as 'goody two shoes'. What I do think is if he had no powers he'd still find a way to be a hero.

He would still be someone you trust and not suspect him of a hidden adenda. He wouldn't endure liars, politicians and selfish people well.

He's Clark with a cape. Superman is just a disguise.

Uv Coarse there's a fine line.

That's why you need good writers to handle it.

Well I always have thought of him as goody two shoes which negates his appeal to me. He's too idealized, beyond comprehension or belief. But I agree with the rest of what you're saying. He will always find a way to do the right thing

Re: The Man of Steel

wow. I'll just say I couldn't be any less of a superman fan if I tried, I've always disliked the character, but holy crap am I looking forward to the new movie after that. I'm glad Zack dropped his overly stylized visuals for this film, it actually, kind of looks normal.

I completely disagree. He's Superman. Clark is his disguise.

Physically, yes. Fundamentally, no. It's the small town values that define Superman. Tarantino had it backwards when comparing Superman to Batman. Bruce Wayne is Batman's disguise, whereas Superman is Clark's disguise.

Re: The Man of Steel

The will to do the right thing isn't good two shoes. It's integrity.

Over in TDKR thread there's a debate about Bruce quiting because of the Dent act. When would Bruce percieved the job of the Batman to be finished?

Superman isn't a job. Superman is a tool so Clark can make the world better. It is a never ending battle.

To aspire to be noble in heart is not silly. It's just all too rare.

Hopefully they won't water that down like Nolan did for Batman, making him only care about organized crime vs. crime in general. Superman still needs to struggle with the fact that he can't be everywhere at once saving everybody. That's what makes Superman who he is.

Re: The Man of Steel

I love that Superman is idealized. I love that he's a symbol of hope, and a symbol of all that is good. We need that, especially in today's world. I'm actually really hoping that they don't make him too relatable. For me, I would love the dynamic of someone with uncompromising morals living in a grounded, real world where everything is grey. He would be seen as a symbol of hope by the people just as much as the audience. Frankly, though, I don't think we have anything to worry about. He turned himself in, when he could've broken through the cuffs like nothing. I just want a good Superman movie, and I think this might be it.

Yep, good post.

It would be a pity if they make Superman's character to reflect the times and he's morally grey and depressing.

Re: The Man of Steel

I don't see anything in the trailer that has me doubting whether they got Supermans character right or not. This movie looks awesome. Im not sure what people were expecting.......a sequel to Superman Returns? :lol

Re: The Man of Steel

Not to mention other personas.

Kent isn't going to act like the same Clark while talking to Ma Kent that he would when talking to Perry White.

Re: The Man of Steel

I am still in awe regarding that trailer. Man of Steel and The Lone Ranger on the same day=:panic::panic::panic::panic::panic:

Re: The Man of Steel

Maybe that's the one thing they could dial back from the Reeve films. Clark who worked at the Daily Planet seems to be as much an act as Superman. He's one guy at home with mom, another persona in the Planet newsroom and finally Superman. When he goes home to consider selling the Kent farm in Superman 4 he drops most of the Metropolis Clark mannerisms.

Besides putting on the glasses he really shouldn't have to pretend to be Clark.
