Re: The Man of Steel

The trailer was ok...it was playing it way too safe. As long as they don't play it safe in the movie....

If they expect the audience to give a ****, unlike the last Sups movie, they need 'balls to the wall' at every step

Color me 'meh' so far

Okay, I've just watched the trailer (didn't expect it so soon) and my first reaction is WOW! Really awesome. The music is good, especially in the second part of the trailer, though probably not as epic as John Williams's theme. I like what we see so far, especially the momentum when he is about to fly away and you see the surface of the ice almost ripple.
There's potential there! I hope the movie is as good as the trailer. Very promising!

Re: The Man of Steel

They tried the deep and meaningful angle in Returns and that went down like a fart in an elevator - show us kick ass action FFS.

That wasn't what sunk Returns, it was the kid and the love triangle. Nobody wants to see Superman as a deadbeat dad or creepy stalker trying to break up a family.

Re: The Man of Steel

Great trailer, looks epic. This looks to be THE best superhero movie of 2013 and without a doubt the best DC movie yet.

Loved the Score, and it too reminded me of Lisa Gerrard

I thought the song in the trailer was lisa gerrard?

I'm with Matt, I'm interested but I need to see more - this didn't show much more than deadliest catch superman.

Kneel.

Exactly, show me why this is the most badass dude in the DC universe. i don't need to see him walking or holding his breath for a 1/3 of the trailer.

Same diff.

Edit: Matt nailed it, he's got amazing powers right so lets see some of em instead of standing in the sunshine at the North Pole looking for Santa or under the ocean looking for Aquaman or freaking staring at a school bus.

Super-weirdo. I hope Zod punches him really hard.

Re: The Man of Steel

I think that Clark and SUPERMAN are both who he is. There are elements of disguise in both facets of his character. Behind Clark he hides what he can do as Superman (flying, his strength etc).

And behind Superman he hides what can only do as Clark (earn a living, interact normally every day, openly declare love without painting someone as an obvious target etc).

And yes, I think he is the idealised version of what a person could/should aspire to be. In today's world that might make for some really interesting plot development...the "Truth, justice and the American way" that people really believed in the 40's, 50's just is not there anymore, but that does not mean that Superman has to change because of it.

Re: The Man of Steel

He will end up a cripple in a prison for half the movie while zod does heavy breathing and press ups. Oh wait...

Re: The Man of Steel

Physically, yes. Fundamentally, no. It's the small town values that define Superman. Tarantino had it backwards when comparing Superman to Batman. Bruce Wayne is Batman's disguise, whereas Superman is Clark's disguise.

Yepp

Yep, good post.

It would be a pity if they make Superman's character to reflect the times and he's morally grey and depressing.

I think the film can reflect the times by questioning his motives. But Superman himself doesn't have to change much. I just think there should be an arc to his character where we see how he gets to becoming the idealized persona he is destined to be. He can't simply start out that way.

Re: The Man of Steel

Damn it's like superman finally gets the movie he deserves for the new decade.

I love all the debate about Superman/Batman Clark/Bruce psychosis and which is real and which is the disguise. These are all great points.

I've always seen it as Superman is who he really is and he has always had to hide as a disguise in Clark ie put on the glasses. At his core he is the farm boy/alien who grew up on earth and always struggled with weather or not to do the right thing which is saving people when he can because he would feel guilty if he didn't. When he goes to metropolis he acts bumbling and cowardly. Fainting whenever there is trouble or conflict so he can skip away and be himself to do the right thing which is take action. Face in full view to show who he really is and what he can do to help. No hiding. Clark is the mask. Hence the glasses.

Batman is the disguise. He wears a mask. He truly is Bruce Wayne the kid who is scarred for life at loosing his parents and decides he needs to create a persona, a symbol to eradicate injustice from the streets of Gotham so that no one will have to suffer as he did. He also pretends not to be angry and not to want to do something about it as Bruce but that is why he does what he does. It is because Bruce suffered, Batman takes action. So he is Bruce Wayne doing what Bruce Wayne wishes he could do but only able to under a mask.

Looks a'aight. But that Pa Kent quote is insanely inappropriate unless it is taken way out of context. ****ing Nolan. . .

I agree with this. That's why Superman isn't an evil dictator type--because of the wholesome Kansas values that his parents gave him. Like you know, sometimes let a school bus full of innocent children. . .die. . .

We need that, especially in today's world.

I disagree. Superman acts not out of guilt (though I wouldn't be surprised if that is the route Nolan wants him to go--makes sense for Batman after all). He acts out of responsibility. Big difference. He feels guilt for not doing enough, but that's not the motivating force. Acting out of guilt is not a virtue. It's self-serving.
