Re: The Man of Steel

It wouldnt be as easy to pull of as in the Nolan Batman's, but I think the one thing that does make it easier is the limited intellect of characters like Bizarro and doomsday, coupled with the unparalleled intellect of braniac and manipulative ability of someone like Darksied. One pulling the strings and the other doing the dirty work.

That being said, Superman himself adds an additional challenge to an effective story. Batman is easy to "ground" in the real world like Nolan has, while characters like Superman and the Hulk are not.

Someone pulling the strings would be good. But what appeals to me about Bizarro is how he contrasts with Superman and helps define him by being what Superman is not.

I think the interesting dynamic between Bizarro and Supes would come in where there's someone else in the mix so we can see how they all relate to each others' agendas. Of course, this treads on some of the same ground that Two-Face trod in Dark Knight so it would have to have a different take on the triangle.

Oh God No. Well Singer is out but.....oh god no.
The Wachowski Bros. May Direct Superman; Everybody Freak Out
Posted at 3:15 PM Feb 12, 2009

First of all, let's settle down. There is no concrete news here, except that the director of The Matrix and Speed Racer have been approached by Warner Bros. execs to direct the Superman reboot. They haven't accepted. Second, let's remember how many directors were attached to the last Superman movie before it got made; there's no real reason to think the Wachowski brothers will direct a new Superman flick until principal photography starts. Third, they aren't even the Wachowski brothers any more, because one of them turned into a girl or something.

Yes, AICN says the Wachowskis have been approached after Bryan Singer "declined" to make reboot of his previous reboot (he's planning on making a Logan's Run reboot, which I'm fantastically excited about despite kind of loathing Superman Returns). That's all the news. And frankly, I'm not sure how to take it. I know i'm in the minority that thinks the first Matrix movie was stylish but incredibly dumb, and I felt Speed Racer was awesomely stylish and incredibly dumb, although that was fine because it suited its source material. So I don't know if the Wachowskis can do "not-dumb." I mean, Superman already isn't the sharpest tool in the superhero shed. Would a dumb movie be well-suited to Supes? Or would it just be extra-dumb? Let's nerd fight it out in the comments.

Another report:

Wachowskis Might Direct Superman???
Yes, this is a rumor. And actually this rumor has been around for quite some time. But, Harry Knowles has an informant who says it may actually be happening. But what about Plastic Man you say? Well read on suckas…

BRACE YOURSELVES FOR THIS….

- McTeigue confirmed that Plastic Man was the next project in the pipeline for the Wachowski's and he had been signed on to provide Second Unit support. Says the movie has been delayed indefinitely due to a major shake up of projects at WB.

- Bryan Singer has refused to undertake a re-boot of the Superman franchise and has left the Executives at WB with no choice but to take a fresh creative direction.

This is it….

- He stated the Wachowski Brothers had been approached to re-boot the franchise as a trilogy and they are currently reviewing their options as its like being asked to take the final play in a superbowl final. Says if they do agree, he will likely either succumb to providing second unit support on the movie or will champion the directorship of Plastic Man - He started to giggle as he stated its like a young child for the Brothers and they wont give that up easily.

- Says, the very thought of the brothers making a superman movie is unbelievable as they have grown up in the world of comic books and they would be ideal for the project.

- Stated that Bryan Singer is looking to move on to Logan's Run a movie to be produced by Joel Silver.

So there you have it. I'll give the Wachowskis credit for knowing how to handle a "super being." They are bad ass when it comes to that. As far as progressing a trilogy - they failed me once. Do I want to see them possibly taint Supes' image? Sure.

Bryan Singer gave it his shot and well we saw how that turned out. (For clarification, I liked "Superman Returns" as a movie. I would have preferred a different villain and a different story but Returns was a good flick.) And since Hollywood obviously isn't going to move forward with Mark Millar's vision, let's have the Wachowskis ram up the action. Put him in a dark place. Let's see Superman get his ass kicked. A lot. Bring us a new villain. ^^^^ Lex Luthor. Show us Krypton. So much to do here.

From AICN:

Rumor... a doozy... Wachowskis... McTeague... PLASTIC MAN, SUPERMAN Trilogy & Singer on LOGAN'S RUN?!?!?!

Hey folks, Harry here... Ballack has been a reliable and constant source of geek rumor news online for many sites, including AICN. This time he's come in with a big one. Now, these are the sorts of rumors that only time confirms, because when you contact folks involved, you get non-denial denials - and no comments. The reason is this. Until paperwork is signed and sealed, these are musings of history... Moments where this is what is going on behind the scenes - but let's see if they make their way to being more than musings, but actual reality.

Now, I have read at least one version of the Wachowski's PLASTIC MAN and have seen the storyboards for that film... it was an incredible superhero period film noir that was absolutely breathtaking waiting to become a living LB COLE work of cinema. As for the Wachowskis and SUPERMAN... well, that could be super! Here's Ballack with the full report...

Hi Guys,

Ballack here, its been a while since we last communicated, however, i thought this time round I'd send you some info instead of our friends at Latino Review. You may recall a few months back i broke the news of Arnold's comeback in T4 at LatinoReview.

Anyways, here in Berlin i had the good fortune of watching a year in review on RTL1. The show was about upcoming movies in 2009. There was a segment on Ninja Assassin a film being directed by James McTeigue and being produced by Hollywood heavy weight Joel Silver. McTeigue spoke about filming in Germany and the many highlights of shooting in a huge city like Berlin. The interviewer spoke about future plans and James spilled the following tidbets!

- Ninja Assassin is locked and complete. Awaiting a suitable marketing strategy and release from WB. Looking likely to be a late summer release.

- Action scenes are absolutely brutal, unbelievable vision from the Wachowski's in blocking the fights with the Hong Kong stunt team.

- Spoke about the benefits of tax breaks received from the German and British Governments in making the film.

BRACE YOURSELVES FOR THIS....

Hope i have remembered everything.

Good luck in the future guys.

Ballack....

Re: The Man of Steel

I agree with whoever wrote that. ^^^^ Lex Luthor. ^^^^ him.

Re: The Man of Steel

Before Speed Racer, I might have embraced this news. But now... I think we need a fan of Superman that isn't an A-list director. Like Nolan before Batman Begins, or Singer before X-Men.

Re: The Man of Steel

I'm gonna throw it out there but it probably won't be well received but I think that Darren Aronofsky could tell a kick ass Superman story.

Re: The Man of Steel

the one aspect of the superman mythos that always intrigued me was the notion of him as a god living among men. yeah thor is kinda like that, but this is much more overt.

i thought it would make a great story if they explored what it means to be an all-powerful deity in the midst of modern society. i mean, really show us the repercussions of a god's actions and decisions while trying to cope with the weight of expectation and adulation (i don't dare say worship cos that'll be too sensitive).

and THEN give him a kick-a$$ adversary who really brings him down to earth, figuratively and literally. see how he copes. will he, or will he just snap?

that's a superman movie i'd like to watch.

Wachowski Brothers Superman Rumor Debunked!
February 18, 2009
Source: SlashFilm
by Alex Billington

Remember that rumor we ran the other day about the Wachowski Brothers directing a Superman trilogy for Warner Brothers? It was both completely ridiculous and incredibly exciting at the same time, right? Well, sadly, it has been debunked. According to SlashFilm, it was all just a big hoax to begin with. "The Wachowski Brothers have definitely never had any talks with DC or Warner Bros to helm a Superman film. This is confirmed." While I had a gut feeling that it wasn't true to begin with, I was wishing that, by some stroke of luck, it might've ended up being true, just because I love the Wachowski Brothers movies!

See, this is the problem with movie sites these days. They get some e-mail sent to them and that they think is real and they run it as headline news. Basically some kid gets his socks knocked off when some crap he made up hits every major news outlet on the web. Who knows if there really was a TV show in Germany with James McTeigue, although I highly doubt there was. It was all a rumor to begin with and to be honest, I mentioned it because I love presenting rumors purely for the sake of discussion - a "what if" kind of thing. Would've it have been really cool if the Wachowskis did get to direct a Superman trilogy? Yes it would.
