Re: The Man of Steel

She is French but we've seen plenty of European actors/actresses pull of American ones with the prior practice, look at Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts, the list just goes on and on.

Re: The Man of Steel

I like Eva, but I don't think she'd be a good match for Routh--she looks a bit older than him, regardless of what their actual ages are. If they got a new Supes that looked older, then yeah, she has the right spirit. But I think the studio would push for a younger look to the franchise...

Re: The Man of Steel

Not sure about that, look at IM. RDJ is in his 40s yet played the part perfectly. I'd rather them get the perfect cast and make three films then get a younger cast that has to grow into the role and make 5. Not to mention that Eva Green was born on July 5, 1980 and Routh was born on October 9, 1979 which makes him slightly older and I know that you said despite their actual ages but if you wanted you could easily age Clark to look slightly older and the basepoints wouldn't be that far.... :D

Agreed. I love Eva but she's all wrong for Lois IMO. Dave is right, she has to be an American Girl. That is if WB replaces Kate, which I hope they do. If they're rebooting this it would be an excellent chance to switch. Then again, Kate is prolly signed for three Films so WB would have to eat her contract.

Lex Luthor Not Returning For ‘Superman Returns’ Sequel?
Published by Brian Warmoth on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at 2:37 pm.

Perhaps an atomic non-story today, rumors have popped up that Lex Luthor may be out as the main villain for the potential sequel to “Superman Returns” (possibly titled “Man of Steel”).

The arch-nemesis of the Last Son of Krypton, most recently played by Kevin Spacey, may not be the one Supes has to worry about when Kal-El comes back to the big screen, according to The Latino Review.

“Writers have been told to come in to the studio to pitch a story with a new villain but again, the WB hasn’t bit on anything they heard yet,” claims the website’s writer “El Mayimbe,” citing anonymous sources inside Warner Bros.

The villain swap strategy has worked for the Batman film franchise, producing back-to-back blockbusters, but it’s worth noting that actor Gene Hackman played Luthor through all but one of the Christopher Reeve “Superman” films. Back in August, Spacey told MTV that his interest in returning to the Lex Luthor role remains high, and that he hopes to “do a second one if they pull it off.”

If the studio did avoid Luthor in a “Superman” sequel, however, the move would throw the door wide open for a fleet of Earthly and cosmic baddies from the hero’s rogues gallery. Anyone from Doomsday (who most recently appeared in the Superboy-themed “Smallville” television series) to Darkseid could be fair game. Terence Stamp’s General Zod became a cult icon in 1978’s “Superman,” so a conservative studio pick could revive the Kryptonian criminal for a new audience.

Exciting leftfield picks, however, could include malevolent nutjobs like the Ultra-Humanite, Mongul or Metallo. An even more adventurous pick could nab a Superman lookalike such as Bizarro, Eradicator or Cyborg Superman — all of whom would likely get film-going fanboys into theaters.

How about you? Who would you like to see Superman go up against in his next full-length feature? Would pushing Lex Luthor aside be a good choice for WB?

Man I really hope they don't cop out and go with Zod

Re: The Man of Steel

I think they should hold off on Darkseid until after they establish a Superman franchise that really works. He shouldn't come in until we really know who the Superman we are watching is, and can do, in my opinion. I think a movie with Braniac as an alien invader would be cool, though. Possibly with Parasite or something as a secondary villain.

Re: The Man of Steel

Best way IMO to play it would be like in the old Superman Animated Series. Have some New Gods (Calibak, and maybe Orion) show up on earth, introduce Apocalypse, and have Superman beat down Calibak. Just as he is about to deliver the final blow...a portal opens and Darkseid steps out, grabs the New God (maybe Calibak) and says something Ominous before disapearing. Then bring Darkseid into the next one as the main villain.

Other then that Id love to see Braniac, Bizarro, Doomsday, or even Solomon Grundy (though Solomon isnt exactly part of Sups rogues gallary it would still be pretty cool).

No matter what I hope they start to tie the non batman movies together!

Re: The Man of Steel

It's good to hear that WB is hearing pitches (if this isn't just a rumor) - but it puts us back at square 1 where we were 12 years ago - trying to figure out how to do a Superman movie.

Darkseid has the whole New Gods thing - too complicated for the start of the franchise - maybe introduce elements of Apokalips but don't make him the main baddy.

I love how Smallville handled Zod and Doomsday - but they took whole seasons to build it up. Zod in Superman II was too simplistic - but the ties back to Supes' origins gives both characters depth and is perfect for a feature film.

Personally I'd love to see Brainiac as he was developed in the animated series - as the main computer from Krypton, designed by Jor-el.

Re: The Man of Steel

Hold on to your socks folks....

I agree with you Dave. I want Brainiac from the Animated Series where its an awesome villain who gives Superman and the audience direct Kryptonian origins as well as giving him purpose.

Re: The Man of Steel

I'll 3rd that. I always loved what they did in TAS by making Brainiac the repository of all Kryptonian knowledge. It's almost a shame that wasn't the original role of the character in the first place. It just makes perfect sense (and also establishes him as Superman's true arch-enemy).

Also, I like the 30's Sci-Fi serial design of TAS Krypton more than Donner's glaciers.

Re: The Man of Steel

Well I think Doomsday would be pretty much out, considering he ended up killing Superman in the comics, which I don't follow anyway. Following that path, I'm curious how he plays out in Smallville. I agree though that Zod would be the easy way out, but they could go with alot, so I guess we just wait and see.

I hate Donner's glaciers and was dying for that to be reinvented in SR....give me more stuff that looks like Kandor than stupid glaciers:

Re: The Man of Steel

SR was on cable tonight. And i really enjoyed it, don't get why it's so bashed. I mean i don't like Kate B. and some other things but it wasn't THAT bad.

Re: The Man of Steel

Yeah...I loved Lex Luthor's plot that dealt this real estate and using Kryptonite to get rid of Superman and his beautiful female sidekick....not to mention Reeve's performance oh wait...that was the 1970s film with the same plot. :lol

Hey you don't mess with what works i guess.

:wacky

Re: The Man of Steel

I'd like a two-villain strategy where one of them is Bizarro.

Re: The Man of Steel

Bizarro is a main villain because he only works to slug it out with Superman. Same goes with Brainiac, Doomsday, etc. Unlike Bats where you can slide Scarecrow in there and have it work because of the dynamics of the characters it'll take a really talented writer to be able to "downgrade" a villain and still make it believable in Superman's core rogues.

It wouldnt be as easy to pull of as in the Nolan Batman's, but I think the one thing that does make it easier is the limited intellect of characters like Bizarro and doomsday, coupled with the unparalleled intellect of braniac and manipulative ability of someone like Darksied. One pulling the strings and the other doing the dirty work.

That being said, Superman himself adds an additional challenge to an effective story. Batman is easy to "ground" in the real world like Nolan has, while characters like Superman and the Hulk are not.

Yea, I can't see Bizarro as a main villain as he is in the comic. He was (again) far more complex in Smallville, but I'd prefer him as a lackey - either to Luthor or Brainiac.
