Re: The Man of Steel
I think most people who oppose the origin story are saying that everyone knows the "general" origin story: baby Kal El got sent to earth from the dying Krypton by his parents and raised by kindly Smallville folk who taught him good, small town, middle American values. I see your point that if they want to explore an origin, it would have to be a fresh take on it and there are very few options left at this point since his story has been told so often.
But because his story is so well known, I think the movie can kinda gloss over it quickly--like you said like in the Hulk, or like I said a quick flashback like Singer did. No need to go into the whole thing again if it's not a new angle. This will give the movie time to explore the world's reaction to the superbeing and Clark's reaction to his new role as savior.
And Singer did take the whole sequel thing a little too far. He could have just "borrowed" the origin from the 78 Superman movie and called it a day. Smallville does it to a small degree in that it uses the Kryptonian crystal theme for his fortress, but they were smart enough to not be enslaved by that approach. In theory, Singer's approach should have worked if it wasn't for the terrible kid subplot and the rehashed Lex real estate plot.
Origin or not, I'm still excited by the prospect of a new Superman movie and that WB seem genuinely interested in making a quality movie (based on them calling on Nolan).
