Re: The Man of Steel

I hate for Nolan to take time away from developing a Batman film, but it's great that WB/DC is putting Superman on the fast track.

As much as I love Smallville, it's a small screen version of the story and I think we need a feature to "go bigger" in a big way. Personally I'm not that attached to Welling as Clark, I think Routh did fine, but Welling has a bit more personality than Routh. He's proving on "Chuck" that he really doesn't have a lot of charisma, no matter how much he looks like Reeve.

For the same reason Welling can't be Clark, Durance can't be Lois, although in my opinion she is the best actress to ever play the part and the character is written better on Smallville than she's ever been, including in the comics.

For a feature that Nolan develops I'd like to see them explore the nature of an alien who wants to be a part of the human race. It would bookend nicely with Nolan's Batman who has distanced himself from humanity in order to be more than human.

Perhaps a plot line that isn't an origin, but is early in Superman's career before he's been accepted by Earth. I'd include Luthor, but where Brainiac is the main villian. Luthor gets Earth to turn against this Kryptonian alien, but then Brainiac shows up and Superman must team with Luthor to bring him down.

BAAAAD news!!!!:horror:horror:horror:horror:horror

I don't want my Superman to look anything like Batman.

Nolan means realistic. That encompasses new costume, "realistic" vilains, dirty city.... everything that Superman is not and shouldn't be!

Clearly, this is a choice that was made purely for business profit, nothing for the fans here.

Let's hope that like all the other previous announcements, this doesn't get made. Better no Superman than a "fake" Superman...

Re: The Man of Steel/Nolan's Superman

C'mon give the man a chance 16K...This could mean the World's Finest team up is in the horizon..

I'm sorry but that makes zero sense.

Nolan means realistic only as far as BATMAN is concerned - because Batman as a character (seperate from the DC Universe he is based in) is grounded in reality in that he has no special powers, and nor do most of the vilains in the Batman universe, so Nolan thought the best approach to making Batman would be to emphasis this grounding in reality and make the whole thing a bit more believable.

With Superman - the guy is an alien who looks like a human and has unbeleivable powers - there is no way he will take a 'reality based' approach to Superman, no chance in hell. I think Nolan's strength is his understanding of character, and that is what he will bring to Superman.

Re: The Man of Steel/Nolan's Superman

Hope you're right, but honnestly, what does it say from the studios?

Basically, "we don't know which direction to go! Hey, we' ve got Nolan, the guy makes big bucks just because his name now means Batman, so he'll do Superman"

Have you checked the previous announcements? clearly, they thought that because Batman and it's realistic approach had worked, then Superman had to be darker! Check it up! I'm not making this up!

Fans have protested. This decision, if it's confirmed, means they haven't listened to those protests. They want Superman done in the same way as Batman (nothing new here: we almost had the worst possible Superman with Tim Burton, just because his Batman had worked...).

So giving it a chance? Well, I have no choice about that, and I'm sure those who loved TDK will love it (after all, they would love anything Nolan does -don't get the feeling I don't like Nolan BTW, I loved his movies, loved BB, just hated TDK), and the movie will make money, but I guess Superman died with Brian Singer. The movie was perhaps far from perfect, but at least it was Donner inspired. This new direction smells bad, but maybe that's because I'm getting older (40), that the Donner years were my childhood and that I'm incresingly fed up with movies that privilege SFX over a decent scenario... :(

Re: The Man of Steel/Nolan's Superman

Well looks like the source of your skepticism is the fact that you didn't like TDK - what was so bad about it?

Re: The Man of Steel/Nolan's Superman

Not sure this is the place to discuss it, and anyway I'll get bashed for it, but without details and to make it short:

- Not bad but FAR from hystery it created. Just an OK movie, much inferior IMHO to BB.
- Bad Joker (this is the part where I usually get bashed!). Nolan is not really responsible for that. I think that the Joker is one of those characters that work on paper, not once impersonated. Nolan (and Ledger!) tried! they failed! It would have been an intersting character but it's NOT the Joker!
- A few other inconsistencies like how fast an honnest, law-adiding/enforcing citizen turns into an homiciadal maniac.. etc...

All in all, average movie that didn't deserve its reputation... Përhaps it is just me and I was expecting too much after the first one!

Re: The Man of Steel/Nolan's Superman

Fair enough - entitled to your opinion of course. Needless to say I disagree but can appreciate maybe why you think what you do.

In any case - back on topic, keen to hear more news about Nolan's involvement in Superman...

Re: The Man of Steel/Nolan's Superman

This definitely has a lot of potential. I just hope they don't use Luthor as the main villain. I have enjoyed everything Nolan has done so far, and his writing is top notch so there is hope.

Re: The Man of Steel/Nolan's Superman

I Love BB and the Dark Knight, and i like Nolans style..but i like it for the Batman CHaracter, i hope if he is such a good filmmaker, he will know superman is a different style that batman. I hope he is a Exectutive Producer and they get a good director also.I dont want a darker supes..just a Good one! TW as SUPES!

:lecture.

I'd love to open it with an operating room dissection scene. Dr. Luthor with a kryptonite scalpel checking out his alien internals.

Re: The Man of Steel/Nolan's Superman

I love Nolan and the Dark Knight. I saw Memento in the theaters twice I enjoyed it so much. But based on his existing body of work, I just can't see it working out well if his stamp is to firmly imprinted on Supes.

Re: The Man of Steel/Nolan's Superman

I'm saying it right here and now neither Welling nor Routh will play Superman in this new film. Singer will not be directing. It will be ground up kind of thing, WB is playing politics where you don't cut off your nose to spite your face and publically say one way or another if you are cutting your cast loose. If they go for a true reboot they'll want a fresh cast which helps audiences differenciate from the previous incarnations.

I wouldn't count out Smallville: The Movie, if the they can get the cast to agree I wouldn't put it past WB with their backs against the wall to go big screen with the continuation of the film but its been pretty clear that they want a complete continuity reboot.

Re: The Man of Steel/Nolan's Superman

WHen do you think a relase date will be, Deff a summer blockbuster. Mabey summer of 2013? because Summer of 2011 is GL and i am gonna assume summer of 2012 will be bats 3.

Re: The Man of Steel/Nolan's Superman

I thought Routh did a fantastic job and would be sad to see a new Supes movie that did not include him.

Me too, but if Warner bros wants the film to be more of a reboot.......Routh won't be Superman.

Re: The Man of Steel/Nolan's Superman

I still want the damn thing done Max Fleischer style, similar to Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. That would be so freaking sweet! If that was the case I could accept a birth of Superman telling again.

Re: The Man of Steel/Nolan's Superman

I really want Welling to be him though, And Erica Durance as Lois, but If Warners wants a reboot. I will accept it, But only if its good. I have high hopes for this movie.
