While I think the CGI needs work, I like what I see so far. :D
I'm sure you do...

As a CG artist, getting CG up to snuff is one of the HARDEST things to do. The story I get is finished; it’s making the visuals to match it that takes time and money. Multiple passes for shaders, lighting, rigging, ambient occlusion, specularity, diffusion maps, effects… any one of these not being in place yet can make a scene look flat or uncanny. No Way Home’s artists kept working on the film’s visuals AFTER theatrical release because they just weren’t DONE yet.

It’s never a matter of talent or “lazy” artists. It’s time, resources, and budget. The show has 3 months dedicated exclusively to polish it up, but even the best movies are compromises.
That might explain why the effects look better on the home video release than they did in the cinema, good to know.

I’m a bit surprised that the company that did a lot of the Thanos work in IW and EG are responsible for this, my guess is lighting is the key, this is lit like a tv show obviously and not a film and this sort of CG will never look as good as the dark moody lighting they used for Thanos. But like you said they are still working on it.

Great idea!!

I wonder why they never painted Mark Ruffalo green? :monkey3
I mean I get your sarcasm but Banner turning into the Hulk is a whole other beast. Structurally his face (and body) changes and doubles/triples in size. Plus the budget for the Marvel movies was drastically different from their TV shows. From the quick shots in the trailer, She Hulk doesn't look too dramatically different in her facial structure(?). And I'm mainly referring to using a paint for the static scenes, sitting at a table, etc.
Because she's supposed to be almost a foot taller than her human form and a bit beefier.
Right, but that's why I was saying to utilize certain camera angles and practical effects. A muscle suit underneath a dress or a suit (with sleeves), shots where she's standing on a platform next to someone else, etc.

I guess to answer my own question, they probably toyed with both options and found that doing some practical effects and some CGI was probably just more jarring than going all in with one or the other. And the CGI just has more versatility. Problem is, if you don't get it right, in those really static scenes with talking and close up interactions the uncanny valley is really off-putting.

Hopefully they address the jankiness of it, the rest of the show looked fun and light hearted.

Or maybe they hope people will just acclimate to its jank and it'll fade into the background while you watch.

This. The conventional wisdom is you have three possible outcomes -- fast, cheap, or good -- and you can only pick two.

Looks like Disney/Marvel have listened. There is an updated trailer with improved CGI on the She-Hulk page on Disney+. Not yet on Youtube I don't think.

Just looks like better compression to me. There's no film grain and banding is present on the youtube version so it looks much softer. The lighting is exactly the same.

Think it's easier to "hide" that kind of CG when characters have stronger features and more wrinkles. Ruffalo's Hulk has wrinkles, stubble, just a rougher and more detailed appearance in general. Plus they gave him the cartoonish tiny nose, so the viewer expects less realism since what they're seeing is already stylized.

Young women and especially children are extremely difficult to do with CG because their facial features are more subtle. No wrinkles or harsh details to hide behind. The texturing has to be on-point and the lighting has fewer landmarks to bounce off of. This is before we even talk about animating the digital face.

I hope this turns out well. I loved Tatiana in Orphan Black. I hope they gave her good material to work with here.

Orphan Black was a fantastic show. I think we'll be lucky if this is half as good.
