Yeah, if ever one movie was guaranteed to be hailed as a masterpiece of filmmaking and an instant classic, it's this one.
Does't mean it's not, but I highly doubt it. It will probably be just another fun MCU flick, just with black people as protagonists.
Calling this film a masterpiece IMO is excessive. To me a masterpiece may be a comedy or drama, but every single aspect of the film is carefully done. Script, performances, pace, CGI if used, lighting, editing. The film may not even be big budget.
Out of the MCU group IMO IM1, TWS, CW, and Ragnarok for me fall closest to that category; tho with all 4, I could nitpick some CGI and a few other small things. For me. Homecoming and Antman IMO are also really well done.
IMO the folks who 'shop and use Gimp/Zbrush etc. or are artists may be the ones like me who find (so far based on clips) the rubber CGI and fuzzy backgrounds distracting. It's not that the other "best" MCU fims don't have stuff I could pick at. But I was blown away by the colors Taika Waititi used in Ragnarok and the design detail. The close shots of the crowd. The surreal appearance of the scavengers (can't wait to own Ragnarok). Above all, (except for Ragnarok's tepid end credits and over-use of the Immigrant Song), like the Russos, Waititi really considered each frame before it went out the door.
Another great example is DS' cloak; so well done it was called a scene-stealer.
So I expected a LOT of BP in the visuals department. More than any other Marvel movie so far except Dr. Strange. Why not, after Antman and IM's CGi? Then I see clip after clip for BP of IMO "lower tier" visuals. Fuzz. Cartoony CGi that reminds me of Aquaman scenes at times. Here and there the acting seems a tad off or the pace is off. I get the feeling that either Coogler didn't have a huge special effects budget, or his focus was on the actors and the story; or the special effects folks just weren't as good as for the other MCU films.
So just based on clips IMO it's not a masterpiece. A masterpiece is something like Last of the Mohicans or The Color Purple IMO. Where you can't find a flaw (at least I can't). Flat out some of these critics are saying the first part of BP is slow etc. Nor, from the sound of it, is the film a gamechanger. E.g., it is compared to other films and even borrows heavily like the SUV chase scene.
Which isn't saying it may not be one of the MCU'S best with engaging performances and stuff here and there you just blow off
. I don't think the MCU has has a bad movie. MCU has stellar actors. But IMO these critics need to get real. To be fair, some are. But IMO if you are going to use words like "masterpiece" you should use a dictionary to find out what that means first.
