We always start off somewhere, and when our desire collect seems more pathological than merely being a hobby to share our love for something, I dare those people to look at themselves the mirror and say "I'm doing well with myself".
Last year I ended my relationship with a local action figure/collectible store owner in my town. He was a cool guy, in his 40's with a wife and kids. I used to hang out at his store until morning! We were such good friends.
One day I preordered the PAK Arkham Asylum Batman, Joker, Solid Snake and Gray Fox and he told me stocks should arrive next week. One week passed and nothing arrived. I called him the following week and he told me that only Joker arrived, so I politely asked him if he could reserve that for me until all remaining 3 figures arrive, as that was our original deal.
He got SO angry he start cursing at me and saying that I abused our friendship, that I'm trying to take advantage of him and I can just **** off. I never even got to explain my side of the argument, with him saying "**** you, you don' get to talk to me!" HE hung up on me and that was it.
My argument was that I ordered FOUR items and that he promised all FOUR would arrive on a specific date, it's like changing your cars' tires, you fork out cash when there's all FOUR as you ordered.
In retrospect, I always noticed that he was abusive to his wife and kids whenever they come over to his store, interrupting his kitbash work, but it's not my place to tell someone how to treat their family, but I should have seen that as a warning that this guy took his hobby as an expression of his superiority.
I believe that collecting is such a trivial hobby compared to the importance of why you exist in this world. God (if you believe in Him) didn't make us to collect toys, but he did gave us the power to do so. If you're so obsessed with collecting that you started to, say, hoarding, neglecting your family or being a jerk, you're NOTHING compared to the other guy who gave a dollar to charity.
For the record though, I never interacted with any such person on Sideshow, just trying to elaborate in my own way on what Solidus said.
