Having Snake going around the world, destroying REX clones would be great... but I can't see it having much story like the other games.

I've been going through MGS4 the last week and a half off and on. My girl is in full agreement that it sucks, and Snake has been put in such a depressing look and state. She asked me the other day, "if Liquid was alive, would he be this aged too?" But of course, he was "drowning in time" too.

Yeah, while I like OldSnakes look that was totally out of nowhere. Kojima himself admitted he did it so MGS would end and he could get out lol.

On random Snake adventures - I'd love that. They could tell one off stories that would totally work. Like Indiana Jones or batman or so many other characters. Snakes games doesn't always have to be about his family

Snake is like Indy, or Bond. Big Boss isn't like either, he's more about building an empire.

Kojima shortened the time frame of Snake's career by ending the series too early.

I don't think any of us here are genetic experts. But, story-wise, it was pretty absurd for Snake to age the way he did in the sequel for MGS 2, when there was no prior indication of his degenerative aging. It would've been more respectful to the character if the aging shown as something more progressive, rather than being so abrupt. Then again, there was hardly anything about MGS 4 that was respectful to Snake, or the franchise, for that matter.
Abrupt, yes, absurd, not really, the fact that Snake's a clone makes it perfectly plausible.

Also, I doubt most people who write stories about cloning are genetic experts.

My point is, that the transition was too abrupt for Snake, considering that wasn't any indication of his genetic aging in the game prior to MGS 4. He was at the prime of his skills in MGS 2, and all of a sudden he became a sickly old man, that didn't bode well with me. Kojima wanted to prematurely kill Snake to fit his own, personal narrative, and he has continued to make MGS games seven years later (which completely defeated the purpose). I guess, he can at least go out with Venom Snake now... >__>

And I was referring to those of us who are commenting here :lol. As for Koji-sama, he's not an expert on anything. Even the storyline for MGS 1 was ripped straight off of the movie "Twins" with Arnold and Devito.

Kojima did extensive research on weapons and tactics for these games. I'd say it's safe to assume he looked into whatever info was available on cloning at the time. Known or speculative.

Well, MGS is a series that's filled with so much camp, movie references. Kojima's also a big fan of action movies, and it helped him out with his writing, even if he had to gratuitously borrow plot points here and there. Universal Solider with Van Damme came out years before MGS 1, but it focused on resurrecting dead soldiers, and I'm guessing that's where he got the idea for Grey Fox in MGS 1.

That's not to say that the series lacks originality, but people give Kojima too much credit for everything. The man's a hardcore movie buff, and his love for movies were translated in MGS. He's not a learned intellectual/researcher, and you'd be very mistaken to consider him as such.

Many words comin' thru....

In the past few days, 2 of the biggest plot points in MGS4 that cause the most criticism have been very solidly justified by stuff that has been long established as staples of sci-fi, I think you guys give him too little credit if you don't at least consider the possibility that it wasn't coincidence, also, I don't think you can say there are many game directors who put so much **** in their games, technical, forward thinking, accurately portrayed ****, you need research for that.

Considering that Kojima has wanted out ever since MGS2, and Konami and the fans have virtually if not literally forced him to continue, it's pretty remarkable that he still made quality games, you can say whatever you want about MGS4 and PW, they may be subpar for MGS standards, but they're still tip top compared to the rest of the industry, taking that into consideration, this franchise could've ended waaaay worse than RE, this could've been George Lucas times a thousand... This thread sometimes overpraises Hayter and underpraises Kojima, you guys just finished a good week of hardcore MGS2 praising as masterpiece and the pinnacle of cerebral game storytelling, or something, and now this :lol

As for Snake being disrespected, well, I can't say it's not consistent with the rest of the franchise, Solid Snake is life's punching bag, he only wanted to have a simple solitary life and gets dragged into ****** situations over and over, the fact that Snake's a stoic mother****er also remains constant, that's why he's a badass, I think Kojima wanted it to be abrupt, he wanted us to react like the rest of the characters in the game: "WTF is that you, Snake?".

Fair enough, I can't argue those points and, in fact, I've often referred to the MGS games as Escape From NY the videogame.

I actually agree with your sentiment on MGS4, by MGS standards is maybe subpar in the linage but as a 'game' it's good.

PW though....... no comment

PW doesn't even feel like Metal Gear. It's Boss fights are lazy, it's stealth is easy, it's characters are boring and it's biggest sin is it adds nothing to the series Except to dilute one of Mgs best characters (if not one of gaming's) The Boss. PW is really the worst in the series but even so I think a reasonable person would say it's a technically good game.

It's the best portable game I've ever played I think. Just amazing. Really fun short bursts of gameplay. I'd say its faults are the drab environments, bad characters /boss and story.

The story was engaging to begin with buy was quite weak looking back.

I just got to Outer Haven in MGS4... I really do love the entire Shadow Moses section, and it's nice they added new environments not previously accessible. Nostalgia through the roof when REX turns on and stands up :drool

On the PSP alone, there's better portable games :lol

I disagree, other than the god of war games, I don't see any other games that can compete

It feels very much like an MGS game, more so than any previous MGS game in the console, at least for me, and it was praised for that when it came out.

As far as not adding anything to the series, I disagree, in a very general way it's the chapter that bridges MGS3 with MGS5, I would love to get a PW type .5 story for what happened between MGS2 and MGS4, but I think that's never gonna happen now.

Just how in the black hell is Peace Walker more like MGS than any of the console games? :rotfl

It's a fun game, but aside from that, it's pretty nonsensical. Especially considering that it's the most kid-friendly MGS game, that serves as a prequel for the darkest chapter in the entire franchise.

Dude, c'mon, I said in the console, the Psp console :lol I was only referring to stuff like PO and Acid.

Oh I forgot MGS1 is in psp, let me rephrase, for the console :lol

It's visually nonsensical and arcade-ish for sure, but still fully MGS.

Ugh... my bad, I read that as "the consoles". My blood was boiling for a second :lol.

I tried playing the Acid games, but I just couldn't get into them. I'll say this, if it weren't for Peace Walker, my PSP would've been a paperweight back in 2010.

I never saw anyone say it felt more like an MGS game. Not once. But being better than 2 spin offs and a game that PW barrows greatly from it isn't really a huge praise.
