I can easily see why people are not enamoured with it though. A good friend of mine who has, (what I feel), superior taste finds the film very dull even though he appreciates the acting/writing etc.

Nice shots there of plainveiw td

It's probably sat in a cabinet in the main office

I would like to hear from the Plainview fans. Why do you like this movie so much? What connection do you have to this movie? Why do you like the character so much?

Not trying to be a smartass just trying to understand why everyone likes this movie so much. Its slowly becoming an obsession as to why others are going head over heels for this movie. I don't get it!!! :gah:

For me its not the story its the dialogue.

Its words like.

I reach over hear and I drink your milkshake
Drainage, ahhhh
I am a false profit.
I will come into your house when you are sleeping and slit your throat.
Or something like that.

And those are just some..

The movies most impressive feat is the acting. It's second to none almost everyone in the film. Diolouge is also good. Cinematography is nice but leaves much to be desired there's a lot more they could have done With some of those scenes.

The film is compelling yet very dull and does not have a lot of rewatchability story is not very compelling, but the character of Daniel is very compelling. It quite enough to carry the film on its own right.

Still obviously a good movie I'd give it a solid 7/10

It's DDL performance and the actual character of Plainview that does it for me. When I finished watching the film c couple years back (yes I was late) I ran to the computer to see if DDL won the academy award and of course he did. He totally blew me away. Plus for a movie I may have only watched three to four times, I remember all of it like nothing cause of his strong acting. And the character of Plainview being such a shrewd and evil man just sold it for my taste! My favorite DDL performance. Yes, over The Butcher!

the film is the classic american tale of opportunity, ambition, and greed in the vein of works like Citizen Kane and Treasure of the Sierra Madre.
as for the quality of the film itself, it is the peak of pt anderson's seemingly immeasurable talent for the moment as well as the film in which i feel he transitions as a filmmaker into a new period of work.
the soundtrack by radiohead's jonny greenwood is a brilliant endeavor in sound and throws the way movie's are traditionally scored in its ear. both haunting in its bare simplicity and lush at the same time.
the performances are phenomenal, of course led by Day Lewis--in what is his best performance since Gangs of New York--who seemingly so inhabits the character that i remember knowing he had me in his grip a mere few minutes into the picture when he was down the hole alone mining for silver, fell breaking his leg and then crawled...etc even the way day lewis signs his name as Plainview on a silver mine deed was so on the money.
and his performance is such a behemoth that it overshadows other really good work in the picture. like ciaran hinds as Plainview's right hand. or Paul Dano as the brothers; his work as Eli was great. and, it should be noted, he came late to the game as the actor originally cast in the role buckled in the face of the dragon known as day lewis and couldnt compete with his intensity both on and off camera.
and how it all culminates in that final, perfect line. really just too perfect. i could go on forever but going to the Con today.

There Will Be Blood is a masterpiece.

also it is based on the story of Edward Doheny, oil tycoon involved in the Teapot Dome Scandal.
