WARNING:
In addition to voiding your warranty,
There are many risks associated with rooting your phone. The most apparent risk is bricking your device. If this happens,

Your phone is and forever will be, nothing more than, a brick.

So far, there are no software solutions for a bricked device. Your phone will be stuck at the splash loading screen indefinitely.
The only for sure way to brick your device is to corrupt both the recovery image and the secondary program loader and the actual rom itself (assuming you have a recovery image that can flash modified roms, an SPL that can fastboot, and a rom with root access)
As long as you have at least one of the three items listed, you are not the proud owner of a bricked device and can recovery your phone.
It is only when you are unable to enter recovery, fastboot, or your rom, and your device is stuck on the splash screen indefinitely, do you have a bricked device.

Also note that rooting your phone will block over the air updates that your carrier may provide you. You are pretty much consenting to opt out of OTA's; you have to update your own phone from now on.

How do I brick my device?:
In most cases, you really have to try, to brick your device. As long as one of the three safety’s built into your phone are functioning, you should have no problem resurrecting your phone. HOWEVER, the most common cause of bricking to date involves the flashing of the Haykuro “death/danger/special” SPL. A hacked developer SPL designed by Haykuro for the HTC DREAM, the SPL partitions the phone’s internal memory (therefore allowing end users to flash larger sized roms). Errors can occur when flashing the SPL or if the user flashes the SPL before flashing the complimenting system radio.

most of the time in a verizon store though, the customer service reps wont go in to much depth trying to fix the issues you are having with your droid - the biggest piece of troubleshooting that can be done with them is a factory reset, which sets your phone back to the way it came out of the box until you sign in to your gmail account - beyond that, if the phone has issues they will replace your phone if the system shows you have a warranty or if you have insurance - technically modding your phone voids your warranty through the manufacturer, but unless you tell the rep that you have done it, its hard to tell just by a quick glance while its being looked at - With the open market platform, most issues can be fixed on your phone by keeping track of what you download - lets face it, some people just shouldnt be making apps - If you have an error code that comes up when trying to reboot or your phone gets stuck, pretty much as long as you have a warranty you are good - all of your issues go through your service provider and not the manufacturer - so it is the discretion of the store to replace your phone or not - as long as your account has warranty or insurance usually you can get a replacement

I have ____ luck with electronics, I am confident my phone would become bricked.

No root for me :nono

Although it is possible to brick your phone, it is extremely hard to do so. I didn't mean to scare you out of rooting, but I think everyone should be aware of the risks associated with it.

On a lighter note, how about some more R2-D2 Droid pics...

From everything i've researched there is no truth to a rooted phone permanently bricking. If it bricks it just needs to be reset to factory defaults and it'll be perfectly fine. I've also read that there is no truth to it voiding your warranty because it can just as easily be unrooted if it needs to go back.

I really don't think the rooting process itself will brick your phone. What could brick your phone is what you do when gain root access. Anybody with even the slightest background in UNIX can tell you how easy it is to F up your system with root access.

Like you said, most things can be cured by resetting to factory defaults, but when you start messing with hardware settings and overclocking, one wrong move and no amount of software restore is gonna bring that baby back.

I need a new phone in about a month. I wanted the iphone, but the horror stories regarding poor signal and dropped calls has put me off. I already live in a mountain area behind Los Angels with iffy cell reception as it is. Would a droid be a decent choice? I literally know nothing about phones. Any suggestions?

Yeah I don't know anything about rooting and all that other stuff I was just referencing articles like this one and some others I've read from fourms.

So I guess my understanding of the whole situation is just based on the basics. I really don't know that there is any benefit of me rooting if I don't understand it enough anyways.:lol

To scared to try to root, but those screens look awesome.

I love that your "Some of my Collection" has 68 photos and "Family" has 2 :lol

That's one _____ about the Droid software. They don't seem to be consistant with their updates.

It's because all the phones are by different companies who have their own UI skin.

Still though--more updates throughout the year than iPhone ;)

Haven't gotten the update for my Droid Incredible yet, hope it comes soon.
