Minus Segel writing though...

Sequel to 'The Muppets' is Moving Forward But Without Jason Segel

After the success of The Muppets last year, it's no surprise that Disney is already commissioning a sequel. However, while a deal has just been finalized with the film's director James Bobin and co-writer Nicholas Stoller, it appears that Jason Segel will not be involved on the writing side of things this time. Vulture has learned that Segel's schedule with "How I Met Your Mother" along with other writing obligations and his promotional work for the forthcoming releases of The Five-Year Engagement and This is Forty means that he won't have time to work on scripting the sequel this time around. That's really disappointing news.

Of course, that doesn't mean he won't have input on the script, he just won't be working full time to write it with Stoller and Bobin. I'm hoping that the sequel's musical portions won't suffer from his loss, but as long as Bret McKenzie comes back, fresh off his Oscar win for Man or Muppet, the music should be in good hands. But what does this mean for Segel starring in the film? Well since we don't have a script yet, there's no telling whether or not the film would even focus on his character again, but Disney insiders say that there's still a chance that he will star in the film, even if he's not writing it. We'll just have to be manly Muppets (or a Muppet of a man) and accept however his involvement comes together.

Christoph Waltz Joins ‘Muppets’ Sequel; More Plot Details Emerge
by Sandy Schaefer

Jim Henson’s Muppets returned to the limelight last year, so Disney is wasting no time on getting another installment in theaters. Muppets co-writer and non-felt star Jason Segel isn’t coming back for the sequel – because he has accomplished his goal of rejuvenating the property - but director James Bobin and co-writer Nicholas Stoller are hard at work putting together a script for a second round of irreverent Muppet antics and human celebrity cameos.

No Muppet movie is complete without actual people to play off Henson’s googly-eyed creations, and the Muppets followup will be no exception. We’re hearing that Christoph Waltz (pictured above in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained) looks to be the first to come aboard, as an important player in the film’s comedy caper plot previously teased by Stoller.

Waltz won an Oscar for portraying Col. Landa in Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, and has spent the years since being type-cast as an eccentric villain (in such films as Green Hornet, Water for Elephants, and The Three Musketeers); in other words, he’s a perfect fit for the madcap Muppet universe. The actor is currently working on Terry Gilliam’s The Zero Theorem, but should be available once the still-untitled Muppets sequel begins production (which is expected to be early next year).

THR has it on good authority that Waltz is in talks to portray an Interpol inspector in the Europe-set film, while some of the other important human characters include “a Russian femme fatale and a male lead whose intentions are always in question.” The overseas setting and plot setup do recall those in The Great Muppet Caper, but otherwise it doesn’t sound as though the sequel is going to recycle that film’s heist plot – though, I’d be willing to take bets that Bobin and Stoller include meta-jokes where the Muppets reference that movie.

The Muppets grossed $158 million in theaters worldwide and earned some of the best reviews in the franchise history, so demand for a sequel is very much there. Nostalgia from an older generation who grew up watching those characters played an important role in that; in fact, that same enduring adoration drove Segel and his collaborators to make the film in the first place. That’s not a criticism, by the way, just an observation about why Muppets resonated emotionally with many adults, while still providing entertainment for younger moviegoers.

A Muppets sequel, in other words, might not have quite the same amount of ‘heart’ as its predecessor, but that leaves more room for pure blissful Muppet comedy, song & dance numbers, and other assorted shenanigans – and that’s what made us all fall in love with Henson’s puppets in the first place, right?

More on the Muppets sequel as the story develops.

Re: Muppets sequel in the works!!

Well if there's anything the first movie lacked which i hope they add in the sequel is some more Rizzo the Rat, love that guy he needs some more screen time.

Re: Muppets sequel in the works!!

Well,
seems like production will start soon on this one!! :rock!

And seems like they're in talks to add Tina Fey to the cast!!

Tina Fey in Talks to Join Disney's 'Muppets' Sequel (Exclusive)

Days before she co-hosts the Golden Globes, Tina Fey is in late-stage negotiations to star as the female lead in Disney’s sequel to The Muppets, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

Fey would join Ricky Gervais as the human stars of the movie, which sees the felt-and-fur-lined puppets engaged in a European-set adventure. Modern Family star Ty Burrell also has a leading role.

The script is being kept secret, but the character descriptions point to a caper. Burrell, as first revealed by THR, is playing a lazy Interpol inspector.

If a deal is finalized, sources say Fey would play a Russian gulag prison guard.

James Bobin, who directed 2011's The Muppets, is back as helmer and co-wrote the screenplay with Nicholas Stoller.
David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman, who produced Muppets, also are back to produce the sequel, which will shoot in London this month.

Fey’s most recent feature role was 2010’s Date Night. She next will co-star opposite Paul Rudd in Admission, a comedy set for release in March. Fey worked with Gervais in 2009’s The Invention of Lying, which Gervais starred in and co-wrote and co-directed.

The Emmy-winning star and creator of NBC’s 30 Rock, who is stepping into Gervais' shoes as co-host with Amy Poehler of the Globes on Sunday, is repped by WME, 3 Arts Entertainment and Ziffren Brittenham.

Re: Muppets sequel in the works!!

Wow, that will be great if they can get Fey!

Surprised she's not involved in writing, though.

Re: Muppets sequel in the works!!

Seems they start shooting next week!,
release date is March 21, 2014 :rock!!

“@rickygervais: Still can't believe I start filming a lead role in The Muppet Movie next week." Looking forward to working with you!

Re: Muppets sequel in the works!!

Tina Fey always struck me as a serviceable actress, but nothing special. Could be fine for this kind of movie, though. I hope Gervais doesn't phone it in. More importantly, I hope it has a decent script. I think the puppet work in the first film was very solid, so no worries on that front from me. Great Muppet Caper was the best of the Muppet films, so if they are going for something in that vein, then I am happy to hear it.

‘Muppets’ Sequel Titled ‘The Muppets… Again!’; New Image and Plot Details Revealed
by Sandy Schaefer

Production has commenced on the followup to Disney’s The Muppets overseas in London. Humans Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey and Ray Liotta are joining Jim Henson’s beloved pack of puppet(y) frogs, pigs, bears, chickens and whatevers (or aliens, if we’re going by Muppets from Space) on a new wacky adventure – one stuffed full with madcap comedy, sporadic musical numbers and celebrity cameos.

We can now confirm the Muppets sequel is officially titled The Muppets… Again! – following weeks of rumors about that Muppet-style self-aware movie title – and offer both a promotional image and more information about the film’s plot (which bears a resemblance to The Great Muppet Caper, as we’ve been hearing for a while now).

Here is the official synopsis (via the press release)

Disney’s “The Muppets …Again!” takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theaters in some of Europe’s most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid and London. But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine—the World’s Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit—and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two [portrayed by Ricky Gervais].

Muppets… Again! director James Bobin (returning from the previous film) describes the sequel as a comical nod back to “old-school crime capers of the ’60s,” but with Muppets. However, EW is reporting the story involves Kermit’s evil doppelganger Constantine attempting “to steal an enormous diamond,” indicating the screenplay written by Bobin and Muppets co-writer Nicholas Stoller might fall closer to Great Muppet Caper than they’d like to admit. (Remember the Baseball Diamond from GMC?)

Of course, getting hung up on the similarities between Muppets… Again and Great Muppet Caper is missing the point; namely, Disney is releasing the new wave of Muppet movies with younger audiences in mind, not those who grew up watching older installments. It’s a situation similar to The Amazing Spider-Man series: the recipe is familiar, but it’s the filling that matters when it comes to the rebooted property’s chance of resonating with a new generation (here, that means good old-fashioned irreverent Muppet humor and heart).

Case in point: check out an excerpt from EW‘s interview with Kermit, where he’s asked about playing the role of Constantine in Muppets… Again:

No. We talked about putting me in makeup and having me play both roles, but we decided Constantine needed to be a guy who could do a Russian accent. And, you know, I’m a pretty accomplished actor and all, but besides the Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island films, I’ve only really ever played myself. The great thing is, I have like 3,000 relatives back in the swamp, so it was quite easy to find a frog who could play Constantine.

For more Muppet hilarity of that ilk, check out the full EW interview and then see The Muppets… Again when it opens in theaters on March 21st, 2014.

Re: Muppets sequel "The Muppers...Again!"

I say this flops. Gervais and Fey are overrated.

Re: Muppets sequel "The Muppets...Most Wanter!" Trailer released!

Now that the "story" to bring the Muppets back is done, this should be even more fun!! :rock!

So, that's what Brett McKenzie from Flight of the Conchords is doing now, writing screenplays for Muppets.

Not really feeling it, though they aren't doing anything really wrong per se. After the first one, I think I've come to accept that the magic of the Muppets died with Henson.

Glad Rizzo is actually going to be in this one! Looking forward to the full trailer so we can get a little more into the plot. This one isn't looking 'movie' enough for me... I'm still excited to take my little guy to see it though!

Well, it's more a teaser than a trailer... I'm sure we'll get a full trailer around Fall.

Still, looks to hit all the Muppety notes. I'm also looking forward to any info that comes out during D23.

Kind of on topic:
Anyone else playing the My Muppets Show app?

Re: Muppets sequel "The Muppets...Most Wanter!" Trailer released!

If watching a Muppet sing Moves Like Jagger seems dated now, imagine what it will be like when the movie comes out next year. Even less fresh.
