Re: Natedog's figure bashes and customs - Echo Station 3TA

I've been working on something a little different lately. I wanted to breath some new life into Lando so here he is. Can you tell what I did? :)

OK the camera probably doesn't pic it up, so I'll just tell you.

The figure itself is untouched. Yes I did put him on the Bespin stand that came with Boba Fett. I didn't stop there. I was never content with the stand lighting so I re-worked it.

1st - I swapped out the 2 AA batteries for 2x 3.7V rechargeable Li-ion batteries.
2nd - I pulled the whole thing apart and stripped out the LEDs but left the ones in the posts as is.
3rd - I always thought the LEDs in the posts were too bright so I put in a bigger resistor too dim them a bit.
4th - I glued a layer of mylar film to the bottom of the base and a reflector in the center.
5th - I replaced the stock white LEDs with some RGB LEDs. This allowed me to get a nice orangy yellow.
6th - wired everything up and glued all wires to the base so they don't flop around and re-assembled the whole thing.

The new LEDs give a much better representation than the white ones did. Also part of the problem with the original LEDs is that they were mounted on their side, shining towards the center instead of up through the floor. They probably did this so there would not be any "hot spots" but most of the light is wasted.

I really don't like everything being powerd by watch batteries that last only last a couple of hours and sometimes hardwiring into power supplies is not an option, so I've been converting a few things. So far, I've done this and my cantina table.

I was hoping to convert R2-D2 but there's just no room in there. I though it might be doable if I cut off those long plastice post-like projections. After studying it for 20 minutes I realized that those projections house the springs for the 3 spring loaded objects (middle leg, pariscope and life form scanner).
Oh well...

Nate, the cabinet looks great! After all the sabers I've made, I still only have 2 figures to wield them myself. :) And wow, that's a boatload of wires in that base.

Re: Natedog's figure bashes and customs - Echo Station 3TA

I wonder what Nate's got up his sleeve for the next figure?

Here's my latest WIP. Hoping to make this one extra epic. We'll see if I can actually pull it off. :)

Re: Natedog's figure bashes and customs - Echo Station 3TA

Completed my HRT. Sort of. The goggles are temporary until Hot Luke gets parted out. The hat isn't awesome but its all we have to work with. Any suggestions for keeping the flaps tighter to the face? I tried reforming them with hot water then setting it with cold water, but they just bounce back. I really don't want to glue them in place. I did not shrink the hat, maybe thats the way to go. Anyways... here he is...

:horror WOW! That is an awesome looking figure. Great work.

Re: Natedog's figure bashes and customs - Echo Station 3TA

Anyone interested in casting these up? I suck at casting! I know its missing the two rectangular indentations on the side but I could not figure out how to make those. I was just going to paint them on.

What material is that made from? Does it start off malleable? Can you stamp the indentations? Then you can just make the right shape as a positive stamp out of something else.

The sides are sheet styrene. What I need is a square punch but I don't have one :(

Re: Natedog's figure bashes and customs - Echo Station 3TA

Almost done Jedi General Plo Koon. Finished the head re-paint. Here's a quick before and after pic.

Look up leather stamps like this. They're cheap and around $5-10 depending on size.

I need to stop buying dollies and get a better camera...Nah!

Behold! Jedi General Plo Koon in all is iPhone 4 glory.

Truetype body. Pants, shirt, robes and boots all from scratch. Repainted Sideshow head and hands. I used plasti-dip to make the gloves. He's standing on a Hasbro battledroid that I plan to make look like he just sliced it up good. That will also light up.

Great job dude! Those boot uppers are awesome. Love the detail you put in them.

Re: Natedog's figure bashes and customs - Master Plo pg44

Nicely done, dude! I really like my Plo a lot more since I converted him. The clone wars style is the best suited for him.

What did you paint the saber with? Just regular acrylics?

Re: Natedog's figure bashes and customs - Master Plo pg44

Well done Natedog! Plo Koon is not one of my favourite character but your custom job is awesome. Congrats!

Haha.... DURGE!

Very interested to see how this turns out, judging from your other work.... I assume it will be awesome.

Do you sell the customs?

Thanks Duane! I think they came out pretty good. They started off as Hasbro officer boots if you can believe that.

Agreed! The movie version was quite boring. I'll be posing him with Wolffe soon. Yes the saber is painted with regular acrylics and sealed with varnish.

Durge? Thanks! I hope he turns out too. No these are all mine :)

Re: Natedog's figure bashes and customs - Master Plo pg44

Good to know. I'm going to paint up the sabers that you did for me. :)

Durge was a character from the original Clone Wars miniseries. But I don't think that's what you're going for with that one. I would guess maybe Pre Vizsla. Can't wait to see him progress.
