I actually enjoyed it as a movie though. Cool plot, cool designs, and well-shot. If the original films were 10/10, I'd give it an 8/10. Maybe 9. But I've said this a hundred times in other threads, so that's as far as I'll go.
AVP-R... first of all, it was too dark. Second of all, the plot was as simple as could be. And let's not forget the unignorable references to the first film, as well as the lame stock 80's slasher characters.

This is all just my opinion. Just a response to CelticP's post.

i don't see what it would hurt to just get all of them. it's only 2 more small figures and they're cheap. if nothing else, it'll encourage NECA to take more chances on more obscure characters from the franchise. it's not like these things take up a lot of space. plus the look pretty cool all grouped together.

Naw man, it's not that I can't afford them or anything like that, the $40 isn't going to set me back at all :lol

It's just that I wouldn't display them, I don't really go for multiple versions of the same character on display if I can't help it. I have no problems retiring an older version and replacing it with the new & improved. I'm just not into buying something I know I'm going to put straight into a storage box, no matter how cheap it is.

Also, I'm all for the obscure preds (Elder and hounds for example). I'll encourage NECA to make more by buying them, but the second version of Berserker and Classic aren't exactly obscure characters IMO.

:lol What's funny is, all this said - even though I say I'm not planning to get them, there's always a chance the old "impulse buy mode" will kick in when I see them - it's the collectors curse :lol

AVP is great. All these movies are cheesy sci-fi flicks and shouldn't be taken very seriously. Anyone that disects films would have problems with the Aliens and Predator series since are are issues with almost single movie.

Really, if you can't just relax and enjoy it for what it is, you're going to be dissapointed almost every time you see a movie IMO.

BUT, if the more "common" preds they make don't sell well along with the more obscure ones, they'll stop making them altogether. And nobody wants that :lecture

So, you saying I should buy every single pred they make in fear that they'll stop making them?

I'm sure NECA would like that very much, but I think I'll stick to just buying what I like. It's OK to pass on a few here and there... trust me on this one ;)

the sequels definitely took a ridiculous turn, but Alien was a "serious" movie. it's so complex and odd to the point of essentially being a big-budget art film. and it pretty much changed everything about the way horror/scifi movies are made.

i'd argue the first Predator was a somewhat serious movie too. it definitely had some cheesiness in it (everything that came out of Arnold's mouth) but it's basically a modern action-scifi version of Beowulf. and the sequels definitely held up better than what happened to the Alien franchise though.

really, none of the sequels had the same impact. all of which led to FOX wanting to turn them into the toy-selling money grab that was AVP. that movie had no seriousness or respect for the craft of film making in it. it's a crass, joyless, cynical piece of crap made by philistines for bored middle school kids. it's the Batman & Robin of scifi. and AVPR was just what crawled out of the PG13 afterbirth of AVP.

If they don't sell well, yes, they will stop making them. I certainly fear that, they're some of the best preds around.

series 3 actually seems cooler then series 2....I'd love for series 4 to be the city Hunter and some lost predators, and then series 5 and 6 to finish off the clan, though I really doubt that it will happen. Would also be cool if NECA did stuff from AVP but I think that's out of the question.

yeah i'm definitely stoked for series 3. as for series 4... i didn't see anything in that interview Sabers posted earlier that indicated NECA is making any more preds. at least for a while. NECA has a lot on their plate license-wise and as far as i can tell, they haven't even started on P2. and the only reason we're getting the Elder is because it reuses most of the P1/Classic figure. until NECA says otherwise, i'm not holding my breath for anything else from the franchise. that said - series 4 should totally have that Stickman thing in it. he's awesome.

I definitely agree with you on this. Alien is the one exception for sure. Alien 3 tried to do the same thing but it didn't work IMO (and is actually the only movie I didn't enjoy in the series).

Call me shallow minded if you like, but I have no problem admitting I like brainless action/mareting driven sci-fi movies. I pretty much just go in open minded with this stuff and just accept whatever comes naturally for me. This allows me to actually enjoy movies like AVP.

All of the modern movies are made with some marketing in mind, that's just the way it is. If I let that stop me from enjoying them, then I might as well pack it in and stick to only the old flicks I saw when I didn't have access to millions of opinions to try to make me second guess myself. :peace

well, i'm not trying to change your opinion, i'm just calling AVP what it is. and to that point, there needs to be some kind of balance between marketing-driven production and maintaining a creative culture in film making. AVP took a running leap over that line so far that it ended up just being joyless and cynical. that's not to say nobody should enjoy AVP, it made a hefty profit in the boxoffice and the toys sold even better. but that also told FOX that they can steer the franchise toward a younger and younger audience. now Alien is the oddball of the series and all the subtlety and ground-breaking atmosphere it's famous for is totally watered down in the franchise. AVP didn't start that trend, but it's success made mediocrity the status-quo.
