I feel that there will be an Alien 5 but not with Blomkamp, I don't think Scott liked what he wanted to bring to the project and by putting on indefinite hold allowed Blomkamp to move on to other projects without losing face if he'd had been fired.

Sorry to ask, but what info do you have that suggest that Scott didn't like what Blomkamp was doing? You might not like Blomkamp, but there is nothing that suggest that Scott didn't like 'what Blomkamp had to bring to the project' as it was approved by Scott and he even want/wanted to produce it. The only actual knowledge we have is that Scott and Fox doesn't want two Alien movies coming out at the same time stepping on each other's toes with hundreds of years between them - that decision still makes perfect sense.

I don't dislike Blomkamp, I think anyone can make a bad film or two and don't hold with much of the criticism he's received. Blomkamp had a finished script already to go, Scott objected and demanded a rewrite (as ive not seen a script I can't say whether the decision was right or wrong). When a project such as Alien 5 gets put back indefinately its usually a good sign that the producers/studio want to get rid of someone because they know they won't hang about waiting and will certainly move on to other projects. Now Blomkamp has financed the concept pieces himself, he's put a lot into this film and I couldn't see him walking away if the production was to commence within the next 18 to 24 months may be even 3 years. Blomkamp has said he's through with Alien 5, now i'd say that wasn't the reaction of a director who held the confidence of a producer with the status that Scott has...whether there's been a big bust up between Blomkamp and Scott I couldn't say but certainly there was a difference in opinion on the script alone. And you have to remember that Prometheus 2 wasn't even originally intended to be an Alien film but its announced as one at the same time as Alien 5 is put on indefinite hold.

Thanks. I'm not saying you're wrong, you might as well be right, but we don't know what actually is going on.
Btw I don't think that Blomkamp has said that he wanted to leave the project completely? Only that he's moving on to something else in between? Or have I missed something?

I'm certain ive seen a quote, probably twitter, of him using the term through...

I really liked his idea's when he first announced the film but the it took on a life of it's own with various people almost attaching themselves to it, Copley and Paxton, didn't help Blomkamp's cause.

Alien 5 is NOT dead. Michael Biehn reveals the plot will focus primarily on Newt!

"Aliens actor Michael Biehn recently sat down with Icons of Fright and revealed the primary focus Neill is planning for his new Alien movie - which would be set after the events of James Cameron's Aliens but before the events of Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection.

During the interview he reveals that Alien 5 will focus primarily on the character Newt, who would be about 27 years old, which means Alien 5 will take place roughly 20 years after the events of Aliens."

And the writer of this article sees no conflict between these statements. I didn't remove anything either, the above is exactly how close together the two statements are in the original article.

I also love that they keep calling it ALIEN 5. So the chronological series will apparently go ALIEN -> ALIENS -> ALIEN 5 (wtf?) -> ALIEN 3 -> ALIEN: Resurrection. :lol

So years from now people will be discussing the films and someone will go "Have you seen the fourth one?" "Oh the one where Ripley commits suicide at the end?" "Wait, what..?"

So is it time to change the thread title to 'Neill Blomkamp's ALIEN is officially cancelled'? :monkey3

When it's OFFICIALLY cancelled then yes. For now it's more like 'Blomkamp's ALIEN cancelled?'
Whatever the media or we think doesn't make it official.

So let me get this straight: the studio is saying it's on 'indefinite hold' (Hollywoodese for 'not happening'), but Biehn is still talking it up and teasing plot points? :slap

To be fair, Hollywood never directly comes out and says a project is cancelled for a variety of arcane reasons. 'Indefinite hold/indefinite hiatus' is pretty much the nail in this thing's coffin. For example: Fox still hasn't outrightly stated there won't be sequels to Fant4stic, despite it being the celluloid and box office equivalent of a flaming mound of tyres.

Blomkamp's ‘Alien 5’ Will Feature a Grown Up Newt

"I know that every actress in Hollywood is going to want to play this one, it's really a passing of the torch between Sigourney and this younger actress who would play Newt. It would keep the franchise alive and the studios would make money, because that's what the bottom line is now: money."

I wonder if the success of TFA will prompt Fox into fast-tracking this sequel. Honestly a sequel to ROTJ starring Hamill, Ford, and Fisher was my #1 wish for any possible follow-up to any movie ever made but a "proper" continuation of ALIENS starring Weaver and Biehn would be next in line for me.

I wonder if Blomkamp is capable of pulling an Abrams.
