How long has Superman supposedly been gone when this film takes place? And how old is the kid? If Lois is in her early twenties, then she had to have given birth in her late teens, and that would have been after the first two films. The timing of this now seems to mean that Superman 1 and 2 took place while Lois was in junior high school.

Or else the character is older than Kate Bosworth--but she doesn't look that much older than very early twenties...

So are you saying that Superman had sex with a teenager? Nah...

I just think of it in comic book terms where people never really age.

Much of the new Film uses story elements and past history from Superman 1 and 2 and pretty much ignores Superman 3 & 4. Apparently it doesn't necessarly take place AFTER Superman 2.

I've always been bugged that Clark and Lois are so young - the actor playing SuperMAN is younger than the actor playing SuperBOY (Welling)! They said they had to cast young because they plan on doing at least 3 films, but it really doesn't make sense for Bosworth to look like that and have a 6 year old.

if i'm watching a movie about an blue tight, red cape wearing alien that flies, the last thing i'm concerned about is that lois lane may look a little too young. it's not like she's 12. :chew

would you rather a 58 year old margot kidder be dragged out from hiding under my porch?:rotfl :D :D :D

i've always thought christopher reeve was the only guy who could play superman, but after seeing the new trailer, my mind is changed.

Superman is 30 years old in the first movie. There is also the cameo by the younger Lois Lane on the train, she looks 10 or so years old compared to 18 for Clark Kent. So going by that, she is 22 when Clark meets her at the Daily Bugle.

Margot Kidder didn't exactly look 22 when they meet at the Daily PLANET. Does it say somewhere that Clark is gone for 12 years in the original movie?

How old was she when he met her at the Daily Planet? :monkey5

it's something like that. when jor-el is speaking to clark at the newly created fortress of solitude, he says how many years clark is "away".

bottom line is, yea, they look young, but i'm not gonna let it spoil a possibly wonderful film. plus when they make "superman returns part 5" in 2018, they won't look too old.:lol

From the TimesOnlineUK:

Mr Singer has claimed that Superman Returns is not a sequel to the four movies in which Mr Reeve starred, although it begins after the battle between General Zod and his gang of Kryptonian villains. Superman has disappeared from Earth for six years while he searches for other survivors from his home planet. The plot involves him returning to Metropolis and resuming his identity of Clark Kent. He soon finds out that Ms Lane is in a relationship and has a son. The residents of Metropolis have learnt to live without Superman.

If it begins after the battle with Zod and his gang, how can it not be a sequel?

The first 4 Superman movies can never be outdone. They were fantastic in every way and Reeves was the best choice for Superman.

The first 4? Are you kidding? The first two were good (but not perfect as you all seem to think), but 3 and 4 were absolutely horrible. Even the most diehard of fans would admit that.

Not being open to a new Superman film is pretty stupid of you. You're missing out on what could be the best Superman film yet. Try not to be so close-minded.

Hmmmm Superman has been gone for 6 years and wow, so has Clark Kent!!!!! That isn't hard to figure out now is it.

4 was bad all around, but 3 had some fun parts. I didn't mind Richard Pryor and the bad Superman is prolly as close as we are going to get to a Bizarro type character.

There were bad parts in all 4, but I rewatch 1 & 2 all the time and they do hold a fond place in my heart. I don't think I've seen 3 or 4 since they came out, but I do remember thinking that with 3 they dumbed down Superman to almost the camp level of the '60s Batman. However Reeve was good in all of them.

Ditto on both;

I'd like to add one thing for Reeve:
On the dedication page of the most beatiful comic book I read it is said like this:

"Dedicated to Christophe Reeve, who makes us believe that a man can fly"

Reeve was someone that can never be replaced.

I wasn't having good thoughts of the newcoming returns movie, however, after watching the trailer, I can say that Ruth looks like a nice Clark Kent. I still coudn;t make my mind of his costume or his Superman look though.

For Lex: Michael Rosenbaum is much more a better LEX imo.

The cast doesn't save the new movie taking into account the bull**** of Lois' child, age inconveniences...etc.

Still it will take people's attention to Superman back again

What are you talking about?? If you had read the previous posts you'd know that this is not what I am talking about. I am looking forward to this new movie and am going to see it opening night. Next time read more carefully and try not to be too "close-minded."

I'm looking forward to this, and I'm a George Reeves fan, so to my elderly eyes Routh REALLY looks like a kid. Heck, when the first film came out I thought Chris Reeve looked a bit young. And while he made a fine Superman, his Clark was a total dork. Having just acquired the Season 1 boxed set of the TV show, I'm understanding what a great job George did. His Clark was a fairly competent person in his own right, entirely believable as a serious reporter. Even my wife agrees that George's Clark is a much more 'real' person than Chris', and she sees Chris as Superman( she's a bit younger than me).
I guess the point is that we just have to wait and see, and be willing to give it a chance to prove itself on it's own merits, in spite of all the extra baggage...PS
Oh, and thanks for the new trailer...
