I feel bad for RGIII. I think he gets criticized for the most insane reasons. He seems like a good, young smart guy. Granted, I don't follow the 'Skins all too much, but I see him as a victim in this whole mess. I know there are people who can't stand him...
I wouldn't call him a victim either. He talks too much and always seems to say the wrong things. There is a reason why is lineman don't help him off the ground anymore.
His people (dad) have not helped his cause. In some ways he has come off as a spoiled little brat, in some ways seems to come off as a victim of bad circumstances. I think the success he had last year (due to his legs) was the worst thing that could have happened to him.
RG3, I haven't followed him too closely, either, but he does seem to say things that undermine his coach. And to me, that's a huge nono for an athlete. Supposedly he has a close relationship with their owner, and goes over the head of Shanahan sometimes, which is another big problem. If you don't have a clear hierarchy, with the coach at the top of game-related decisions, then you have major problems. A big part of that is the coach's fault of course, but the players need to have respect for the way things should be done. He should be voicing his concerns privately to the appropriate people, and not publicly.
Cam has shown some grown and maturity this year. In the past years he pointed the blame on others when things went bad, but now he's putting that stuff on his shoulders and speaking highly of his teammates when winning; not taking credit.
RG3 on the other hand, as others have pointed out, is allegedly very selfish and there are reasons why his linemen don't help him up. (Actions speak louder than words)
Apparently he has asked coaches to not show film where he has bad plays (former Baylor players said this was true in college) and he was given a parking spot at the stadium next to the exit so that he can quickly leave after games to avoid any media outside after press conferences.
I live in the DC area and get inundated with RGIII news, and by extension, news on Washington's football team. Although I'm a Cowboys' fan and have facetiously referred to him as RGMe in a few posts, I have nothing against the guy. He seems like a genuinely smart kid who unfortunately has believed some of his own hype. He didn't do his coaching staff or the organization any favors last offseason saying/tweeting that he was "All in for week 1". Without any reps in the preseason, he was bound to be rusty (and as we all know, by no means is he a pocket passer). Just because James Andrews did the procedure for Adrian Peterson as well and AD had a career year afterwards, there was guarantee Griffin would come back as strong.
His leadership skills (or lack thereof) have been questioned. After each Washington loss, it was always "We have to play better", and he was taking passive aggressive shots at the coaching staff. This was most notable after the second Philly game, where Washington came back, but RGIII threw a stupid pick in the end zone. Veterans such as Santana Moss chaffed when Griffin didn't take responsibility and own up to his mistakes; instead, he took pot shots at the coaching staff, saying the "Eagles knew what we were calling".
Griffin has denied the reports saying that he didn't want video of his bad plays being shown, saying that some one leaked that report for "character assassination". Earlier this week, when asked about the ESPN report that Shanahan considered quitting last season due to RGIII's relationship with Snyder, he replied "I have no comment...[this story] is not relevant to my life". WTF? Yes, it is relevant.
By no means is Griffin the only complicit one in this debacle. Sorry, but Shanahan has no business coaching anymore. His coaching record without Elway speaks for itself. And he didn't do himself any favors as well by hiring his son as the offensive coordinator.
But the biggest problem in all this? Owner Dan Snyder, who cultivates a star system with the Redskins. Snyder wants to be buddy buddy with his players. Snyder's personal security team accompanies Griffin out on the town. That parking spot referenced in the earlier post? It's actually inside the stadium, where NO players have ever had a parking spot before. From the Washington Post:
But then we hear about Robert Griffin III’s car being parked in the bowels of FedEx Field during the game for a painless exit afterward and a longtime employee calling another to say, “The kid’s got a parking space during the game? No one got that.”
Allegedly during last year's win over Baltimore, where RGIII was injured and Kirk Cousins came in to lead Washington to victory, Snyder spoke with Griffin in the locker room at length after the game...but didn't say a word to Cousins, who's locker was next to Griffins and had led Washington to victory. This infuriated Shanahan to no end.
All and all, it's a debacle here in DC.
