If he asked them to make sure that were at the lowest legal level why the hell would've just not said that? This would have been over in two seconds yet he we are over a year later so there is no way that true. The team would have never taken the penalty they took. Sorry you don't take what amounts to a plea bargain when your innocent.
Who is they, who the NFLPA? Guess what they don't make that decision. So you know what they screwed him with bad info, and he destroyed his phone. Then he "tried" to get that info back?
