Steelers released Hines Ward. He says he still has more football left in him, so highly likely we'll be seeing him play somewhere else next season.

Never thought I'd see him in something other then Black and Yellow.

Last year this was pretty apparent. I'm sure he can still have some sort of an impact outside of his personal fouls. I'm just hoping the Eagles don't pick him up. Would rather go after another criminal like Burress. :lecture:rotfl

On second thought Ward with his drunk driving would be criminal. Burress is just better at this point in their careers. :lol

I can't believe Philly franchised him after the crap he pulled because he didn't get a long term contract, and then when he finally decided to play he had a piss-poor season at that. I would've stamped him with a "for sale" tag, and booted his ass onto the open market.

Back up and think about what you are saying. Understand it makes zero sense. Let's look at this.

I think he is now bargaining meat. Trade fodder. Why would the Eagles let him go and chance getting zero in return? That would be stupid! Now the Eagles have all the leverage. So franchising him was a fantastic decision. They can now trade him and see a return.

Why can't you believe they did this? He is by no means safe in Philly until he touches the field.

In that aspect, yeah, good move, but you can only franchise one player. I don't know enough about Philly's roster to know if there are other players that don't have long term deals yet, that they'd like to keep, that they could use the franchise tag on. For some idiot like Jackson, he'll end up getting the impression from the franchise tag being slapped on him that he's essential to Philly.

Now if they get a 1st round draft pick for him, to go after another top receiver, then they look like geniuses, but if no one bites and they're stuck with him this season coming up, then everyone is going to be boggled by them wasting their franchise tag on him, especially after his debacle last season.

Steelers also release Kemoeatu and Aaron Smith, and reports are saying Farrior could be next. Roethlisberger, Woodley, Timmons and Colon all restructured their contracts to make cap space for the team, and they will like wise place a 1st round tender on Wallace. Looks like they're making the smart moves for the teams immediate and long term needs.

Now I'm just curious to see if Ken Whisenhunt keeps rolling with his Arizona Steelers trend, and snags Ward up.

There really isn't anyone else on their roster that was worth the tag. This is a fantastic decision either way whether they keep him or not. Some team out there would have grabbed him if they didn't do this. Again now the Eagles have all the leverage.

The franchise tag is basically a team's way of retaining a player with no long term contract for the upcoming season, without having to sign him to a long term contract for that season. For a lot of teams it a good way to retain one of their young stars, without having to sign him to a big deal yet and creating less space in their salary cap. Or, to get the better end of a deal out of a guy they really don't want to keep, I guess, like with Douchean Jackson.
