disagree eli. With his stats and what he brings to the table I think thats a fair amount for both sides. Maybe an even million would have been better, but he was one of their better players in the earlier rounds of the playoffs. Were paying cooke 1.75 I believe. He may have a bit better hands, but has his own issues as well.

If this wasn't a cap league I wouldn't argue this, but when you are near the cap ceiling, you need to make smart, strategic choices. Carcillo at 1 million+, who plays an agitator role that gives his team little scoring... there are many of that variety circulating in the NHL, and at a cheaper price. Albeit, not with Carcillo's offensive upside. Having said that, averaging 15-20 points as he has with Philly isn't anything to brag about. He's a guy who takes some dumb penalties for his team. All that being said, I think what he got was within the market for his pedigree of player. I would have used that money on some younger players/prospects and see how they do. They save you bundles of cash, and why not test them out now while you have the depth and experience that the Flyers have? These are new times. Teams have to be more creative and explore other options.

Speaking of salary cap issues, the Bruins are most likely going to be heading to arbitration with Gregory Campbell. Last year he made 800K, If he gets anything over 900K for the 4th line center, it'd be more misuse of the cap by our supposed "capologist" GM Chiarelli.

It'd be nice if he could get Seguin signed to that ELC already.:gah: The kid looked good at the rookie camp last week. I couldn't believe how many people showed up. I guess getting out of the 90 degree humidity had something to do with it.:)

Paul Holmgren had 11 million US of cap space to work with and what does he do? He signs a KHL player in Nikolai Zherdev who has been called lazy and selfish when he plays, and now he just traded Simon Gagne for a 4th round pick and Matt Walker. I am so glad I am not a Philadelphia Flyers fan. Tampa Bay Lightning and Steve Yzerman, welcome back to becoming a contender. I like how the Lightning are shaping up with Yzerman behind the helm. This team is going to be hella GOOD!

Kovalchuk for 17-years?????

I saw that too.

WTF?!?! 17 years!! He's going to be 44 years old in 17 years......do they really think he will even be playing after age 40?!?! and if so, will he be any good!?!

I honestly think the whole Kovy deal is a bad idea for any team right now.
He's overrated, doesnt perform in the playoffs and is too damn expensive. I sure hope the Devils know what they are doing.

And if they win the Stanley Cup next season Ill eat my own foot.

Im not a Lightning fan but I couldnt agree more. They are shaping up to be a contender next year for sure. The question mark I see right now is the defense and if Dan Ellis can perform up to what they need in a #1 goalie.

The league should step in and put the kibosh on any deal over 7 years.
They need to protect owners from themselves and fast talking agents... lol

The Devils wanted him and they managed to manipulate the cap to give Kovy the 100 million he wanted but over a longer period of time, even though everyone knows Kovy won't be playing those final 5 or so years of that deal.

Kovalchuk will earn $6 million each of the next two seasons, $11.5 million for the following five seasons, $10.5 million in the 2017-18 season, $8.5 million for the 2018-19 season, $6.5 million in 2019-20, $3.5 million in 2020-21, $750,000 the following season, and $550,000 for the final five years of the unprecedented deal.

I totally agree with you.

It just seems so over the top to me for them to pay him 11.5 mil for 5 of these 17 seasons.

Ovi and Crosby dont even get paid this much. Not that they should.
Nobody should. It just doesnt make sense that Kovy is getting it.

He's good, but not that good.

Lou Lamoriello... What are you thinking??

The NHL is a joke league. Have no misconception of what I think, as I still believe Ice hockey to be the best sport around. The National Hockey League however, is a piece of ____ run league.

It's not only the fact it's a front loaded 17 year deal or that Ilya Kovalchuk won't play the entirety of the contract, it's the fact it's for 102 million US. He'll be lucky to even play beyond 35 on that team, without them buying out the rest of this ridiculous contract. This league further proves just how awful it is. If it weren't the fact I am into keeper fantasy leagues and the odd pool I would have zero interest in this league. My main focus and interest in hockey is the junior and minor leagues. I love how the league is doing nothing to stop signings like this.

What was the point of the 04/05 NHL lockout? I thought it was put in place to end these crude contracts. It's sickening. Nothing has changed. Where was this evolution we the fans were promised that the NHL would go through to make it a better and more cost effective package? What a ____ing joke!

I am close to ending my love affair towards the NHL. It was a long marriage, but like all good things, this must come to an end. With all due respect, I been falling out of love with this girl for over 10 years. These past few years is making it easier. I have to thank the NHL for getting me into hockey way back in 89' when scoring was at an all-time best, tickets were cheap (granted my parents bought the tickets as I was far too young then), hockey cards were the thing to collect, and the league had at one point seven Canadian teams, then as high as 8 with the return of the Ottawa Senators. We saw those Canadian teams actually win Stanley Cups. I liked the superstars more then. They seemed more passionate about the game. Yes, it was a business then, but not to the point it has become now. You have many more superstar's of today who's loyalties towards their teams fail in comparison to the superstars of yesteryear. Yes, defend away therisingstar's of the forum... I don't care. You won't change my thoughts and feelings concerning how sheeitacular this league has become.

You want to discuss AHL, ECHL, WHL, OHL, QMJHL, BCHL, MJHL, and NCAA I am your man! Hockey is still my baby, and always will be. I just re'upped my season package with the Manitoba Moose. Yes, I realize the team's main principle is to develop for its parent NHL club, the Vancouver Canucks. Also note, they are one of the rare minor league affiliates that are independently and locally owned, and operated. Their jerseys are one of the few who don't share its NHL counterpart's colour scheme or share the ridiculous costs one would pay to go see a game. Naturally, it's because they aren't an NHL venue, but I could be fooled, as 85 percent of the NHL's player personal makes its way through the AHL revolving door each and every season. Many of the players signed like your Marco Rosa's and Mike Keane's are signed because they just want to play for the love of the game. Of course the almighty paycheck is a huge part, but at least their pay is more realistic and comparable to the every day average hard working citizen. :)

maybe if you considerd he NHL to be a boy youd love it again ho mo

That's why you love the NBA. Now get out of here! The NHL thread is for men only! No girls allowed, unless you're hot and knowledgeable when it comes to the sport of hockey. Like the ringer for example. She knows her stuff! :nana:

P.S. And learn to spell you ****!
