Well, I disagree that it's all about American fans. It's about attracting fans in general. The problem is Uncle Gary WON'T listen to fans. All fans hated the stupid glow puck. Most fans hate the shoot out. Most fans ( and all players ) hate the new style of jersey. Most fans don't like the rule changes that keep taking place every year.

Problem is Uncle Gary does not care.

I don't blame Gary. I blame the NHL board of governers who pay his salary.

And you really can't disagree with fact. Many of the decisions are made are for the American market in mind.

Trust me, getting Canadians interested in hockey is not a problem and the NHL knows that. I can throw out numbers... trust me you don't want me to go there. hehe

Well Eli you can throw out numbers if you like. I mean it is a fact that the vast majority of teams are in the US so by the numbers alone if they were to attract these "new" fans then the majority would obviously be in the US.

I just don't think rule changes like "Goalie can't play the puck in the corners" has anything to do with getting American fans excitied about the game.

NHL PLAYOFFS TONIGHT!!!!!! First round rocks, can't wait until the puck drops, i'd have to say, the first round is always the best! You have like 2 games televised every freaking day, whats better than that?!

Lets go Habs!

San Jose / Montreal finals, you heard it here first people!

Things the NHL did that I dislike...

Location of certain NHL franchises in poor markets vs. markets that would welcome an NHL franchise.

Glow puck. Well, more of a network thing. No Canadian network went with the glow puck. Cause how can anyone miss a bloody black puck on a sheet of white ice?!

The bloody shootouts.

The trap... okay, more of a coach implemented system, but makes for dull hockey.

The Edge jerseys by Reebok. Who's bright idea was to make frail jerseys that don't wick properly? Especially with the knowledge that the past jerseys held up better and actually wicked better.

Placing stupid numbers on the front of jerseys. Dallas home jerseys are ewwww! This isn't basketball guys!

Puck bunnies... not complaining. I just wish some of those girls actually knew a thing of two of hockey. Although they are fun to look at. Screw it! Long live puck bunnies!

My gripe in pretty much every major sports.. cost of games.. TOO EXPENSIVE!

Hiring Gary Bettman.

Oh and another gripe is how the NHL tends to favour its superstars over the regular players...

30 game suspension to Chris Simon for intentionally stepping on Jarko Ruutu's head with his skate. Chris Pronger commits the same act and he gets a measily few games off?! Simon honestly shouldn't even be in the NHL. He's a cancer, but I am just saying, don't play favorites. Kids look up to these players and will grow up thinking if you're the stud in the league you can get away with crap. What a poor double standard.

I also hate guys like the Steve Downies who get themselves suspended for huge portions of the season, even before the season begins, just to make a name for themselves... ugh. Trying to hinder or end another player's career over a game, A PRESEASON GAME, is so tacky, ridiculously stupid, and shouldn't be a part of the game.

this disturbing trend has made it's way to all major sports. the ONLY adults kids can now look up to are their parents, when they're around and not working their two jobs each. kids go unsupervised and learn from the wrong places, like tv, video games or the playground. it's now commonplace for kids to video peer beatings or sex. not to mention killing fellow students or third graders plotting to kill their teacher. this world is *ucked, the end times are here.

I think every sport is guilty of this, right now I am happy with the way the league is, its extremely competitive and almost any team has a chance to win now.

There are MUCH MUCH more major cities in the US than in Canada which can support the costs of an NHL franchise. It's simple logic... but my point is, Hamilton, Winnipeg, and even Quebec would allure more fans than a place like Nashville, and probably half of the other teams located in the US. Pretty much every Canadian franchise enjoys near-to-sell-out to sell out games, pretty much every night. Whereas places like Phoenix, Nashville, and it's a long list that goes beyond that, but those are two teams that usually get knocked for having terrible terrible attendance, in some cases where the buildings are half full. Don't be fooled by the recorded attendance numbers the NHL publishes. Go by pictures. Pictures don't lie. I'll find a link for you and show you the proof is in the pudding.

When Team Canada was playing the US for Olympic Gold in 2002, the ratings for that game were so astronomically high, that it shattered records left, right, and center for viewership in Canada. 1/4 of the country (which almost sounds unheard of) sat down to watch the our team win Gold. Just under 2 million of Americans watched that game to support the US team, which isn't even 1 percent.

Lets face it, Americans rather watch cars go around an oval check on a repetitive basis vs. watching a game that actually has a lot more to it. hehe

Oh, but the crashes are so much fun... yay!

Atleast hockey isn't as bad as MLB, where A. Rodriguez 28 million US per season contract is more than the entire payroll of the Marlins baseball club, at 21 million US. lol

Your know that the MLB is messed up when one player on one team can make more than an entire roster of another club, and in the same league!

isn't racism categorizing one specific group of people? :lol i've played hockey since i was 8 years old. on street and then on ice. us americans do like the sport, unless of course you're from the south where nascar rules.

wow, I am racist for stating a fact that Nascar gets much higher ratings in the US than hockey? Oi.

And how my comment could be considered remotely racist, is beyond me. Tylerd, stop embarrassing yourself.

Here's a link to the Coyotes games....

Well, not many pictures of different venues, but check some of the attendances. Do I see a tumbleweed blowing through some of those pictures?

I'll find more later.

I am certain we could find pics on the net somewhere which shows how mediocre attendance is in some buildings.

And lets continue these hockey talks without throwing around the racist card. Nobody has been racist in this thread to my knowledge, so please get off whatever pipe your smoking and talk hockey...but leave the false accusations to yourself Tylerd.

ok, :lol = jokingly written. i guess you've just ignored the link i provided to all the organized junior hockey from the u.s.? denial is an ugly thing eli. as a reminder, winnipeg and quebec lost their franchise because they couldn't support their teams.

also, you've automatically assumed hockey isn't popular in the u.s., yet 25 of the 30 teams in the nhl are from u.s. cities. if these cities couldn't support a hockey team, there wouldn't be one there, would there? or is this a conspiracy to take away canada's heritage of hockey, even though the organized game of hockey on ice originated in the 17th century courtesy of the dutch.

i'll ask you to stop embarassing yourself but it's too much fun to watch. :lol :lol :lol
it's nice that you love hockey but the sport belongs to the world and isn't just a canadian exclusive buddy. that's right guy.

That is one thing I think is weak with Hockey. Don't get me wrong I love a good brawl. However, these guys are pros. They should act accordingly. Fighting should not be tolerated. I know I will be bashed because this is a HOCKEY thing but come on. What is it saying about the players? It is almost like throwing a temper tantrum. Take the NFL. Nothing says tough more than when a wide receiver get slammed to the turf and bounces right back up and gives the corner or safety a nice nod. As if to say you aint hurt me. In hockey a guy gets slammed and wants to piss and moan and fight. I say take fighting out of the game and bench them all. This whole ENFORCER stuff is lame. It is weaker to me to watch some guy get slammed and then want to fight then just shaking it off and saying nice hit.
