Re: Nintendo 3DS

Got word that 3DS demo kiosks are starting to show up at Best Buy stores around the US. Check your local BB if you want to try it out now.

We are now exactly 2 weeks away from launch in the US. UK in 12 days, Australia in 18 days.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

Just tried it out at work before I left. First the blue color looks alot better then I thought it would, though the multi colored layers is a tad annoying. The Vendor only had the AR cards and Nintendogs. Tried Nintendogs for abit, but mostly messed around with the ? AR Card.

Only played for abit and then went and got someone so she could try it out some. Let her mess around with the games and cards. She ended up liking it alot.

The 3D looks alot better then what I had thought it would, though looking at the wrong angle (kinda when she played) it loosk a little sloppy. I might preorder one, but still a little undecided atm....prob will though.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

Tried one today for a brief 15 minutes. Would've liked to play longer, but after a bit there was a kid standing behind me so I let him at it before I was done.

The demo unit at Best Buy only had Pilotwings available to play. The 3DS home menu isn't accessible so I couldn't try out the cameras or AR games unfortunately.

First off, the 3DS hardware looks really nice. Like Sniper33 said above, the blue color is better when seen in person. In most photos I find the bright teal bottom plate of the 3DS rather ugly and mismatched in the system's color scheme but when in person it actually wasn't bad. As for build quality and weight I couldn't really get a good impression of it because the 3DS was attached to a security plate and tethered to the kiosk.

I was surprised by how much I liked using the circle slide pad. It's a massive improvement over the PSP's analogue nub, with just the right amount of resistance and grip. The D-pad clicks and feels like the DSi pad and not like the mushy DS Lite pad. As for the other buttons, I didn't like the placement of the start and select buttons (dead center below bottom screen). The power button is placed where the start and select buttons were on the DS Lite and more than once I accidentally pressed it thinking it was the start button. :/

Like I mentioned before, I was only able to try Pilotwings today. Anybody who's played a Pilotwings game before should be familiar with it. Only 3 aircrafts were available on the demo unit: Airplane, Rocket jetpack, and hang glider. I tried all three in Free Flight mode. From what I played it seemed like the entire island could be traveled right off the bat (there's only 1 large island in the game). The graphics were nice but not outstanding in any way.

Frankly, I think Nintendo chose the wrong game to place in all of these Best Buy demo kiosks. The 3D effect in Pilotwings doesn't pop out of the screen but instead recedes into it, creating depth. It's nice, but I don't think it has that "wow" factor that would amaze the casual shopper or passerby. In my opinion Super Street Fighter IV or even Nintendogs would have been better choices if Nintendo would only put 1 game into these kiosks since they have modes that place the camera angle as such that the 3D effect really wows.

Anyway I really did enjoy the time I spent with it and I'm now even more excited to get my hands on the final product.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

I just recently tried out Pilotwings for the 3ds and am very unimpressed. You think they would have a game with the much hype pop out effect that the 3ds can achieve, but nope like Plasmid mentioned, it just recedes in and gives you an eye strain after a few minutes of playing. You also have to be about a foot to a foot and a half from the screen or you get crossed eye. Move away from the center sweet spot and it looks like the system is going wacky.
I really have my doubts that you can really achieve a 3d pop out effect without glasses for now, maybe in another 5 years.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

My TRU has both Madden and Sims 3 for $39.99, don't really like that the cases are white though, looks odd (but guess it matches the wii).

Also, is there any reason why the 3DS games have that extra hangover on the side? Kinda like a tad on the top side.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

I tried the system at my local BB too. They had Pilotwings up and at first, my eyes were having a lot of trouble focusing, but when I dropped the 3D slider down to about midway, my eyes had a MUCH easier time visualizing the effects. IMO, the drop in the 3D effect made the game feel and look much more natural. Ramping it up all the way made it feel like a movie that had crappy diorama-style post-production 3D effects where your eyes have trouble focusing on where the action is.

I'm not blown out of my mind, and I wasn't expecting to be. But I'm still quite impressed.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

I tried it out today at Best Buy. Was really cool. I was impressed at the way they were able to pull it off. The 3D was impressive on PilotWings so I'm looking forward to seeing it in action on other games.

Plus the system itself is just gorgeous.

I haven't really been boning up on knowledge about the differences between the autostereoscopic 3D that the 3DS features versus standard stereoscopy in other 3D media. Is there a reason to think the method used by the 3DS is less capable of producing a pop-out effect compared to other methods of 3D? From what I've been reading Street Fighter IV and Nintendogs excel with the pop-out effect. Pilotwings does not. If you haven't tried any other game but Pilotwings, maybe you could save your doubts until you've tried the other games?

edit: Also, just 10 more days until release!

Re: Nintendo 3DS

I tried it out today and thought it looked fantastic. It's the type of effect I was hoping for. Pilotwings isn't the game to offer a pop out effect. It has a beautiful sense of depth though. People should lower their expectations about the "pop out" effects. I've played a lot of 3D games and pop out just isn't a big part of it. It's more about a sense of depth and volume. Only thing I didn't like was how narrow the viewing angle is. The analog nib is very nice and the PQ on the screens is terrific. I like what I saw and I'll be picking one up.

The way the screen works is just like lenticular images---the ones that are plastic and have the ridges and when you move them from side to side it might look like the image is moving.

Basically, depending on the angle that you look at the screen, you'll see a different image, and the screen is adjusted so that in the right position each eye would see a different image--that's what creates the 3D.

It might look better to not have the 3D up all the way, it's the same way with games in 3D on the computer. But there's nothing about the technology that would make it inferior to other 3D methods other than that it can only be viewed by one person.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

The AR demo at the 3ds pod demo area was awesome, I was surprised by how fun it was. The 3d was better than I expected as well, although I had to adjust the amount of 3d in Pilotwings, it felt a little odd at the FULL 3D POWER, haha.

Still, I'm more excited about the system than I was, looks like it'll be a good release. I'll still wait until a price drop/hardware revision though.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

Put down my Preorder for the Cosmic Black. Was not gonna preorder and just get it day one, but figured its better to be safe then sorry. Also I work a 5 hour shift that day, so I will get mine during my break and set it up before getting back to work.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

I went to my local store where I will be picking the 3DS on Friday and I was enquiring about pre ordering the games. They let me play SSF IV. The 3d was incredible. Seeing really is believing with the 3DS. The depth of field was amazing and the whole thing looked sharp and played smoothly. It's hard to describe the effect but to me it's so spectacular. Does it change the gameplay? Not for this game but I can imagine future games will make proper use of the 3D for gameplay elements. I think this console has n very bright future. I'm so pumped for Friday that I ordered 2 games and an accessory pack. Lol.

Re: Nintendo 3DS

Amazon just shipped my order of Ridge Racer 3D and Rayman 3D. Should be here on the 25th. I am going to pick up my 3DS on Saturday night with SSFIV. :D

Re: Nintendo 3DS

Ridge Racer is supposed to be a return to form for the series but
graphically it's not supposed to be great. The launch line up isn't brilliant but i'm excited about the built in features.
