Just got back. What an absolutely horrible movie. I don't know what the crap they read, but it wasn't even remotely close to what is in the Bible. I don't recall stone demons helping Noah build the Arc. They just totally interpreted this whole movie wrong. They make Noah out as a mad man that really doesn't understand what his purpose was. Totally misguided. I can totally see why so many are getting offended by this. Anyone that has actually read the Old Testament ought to be really. They are that far off. The Exorcist is a more spiritually uplifting moving than this was. Seriously.

And I went in expecting Hollywood to put their spin on the story. They always do after all. But I just wasn't expecting them to be so far off. Rather than portraying Noah as a prophet he's just a dude cold hearted enough to let the whole world die (including himself and his own family). He really never had any guidance or direction on what he was doing. He totally didn't understand his purpose in the whole scheme of things.

The visual effects of the flood were of course great. That was really the only good thing about the movie. I honestly couldn't recommend anyone go see this movie though. Religious or otherwise. If you're religious, it will probably offend you. If you're not religious, its not that great of a movie to waste 2 and a half hours on. I'm honestly disgusted with myself for not going to the new Arnold bomb instead.

So was there anyone who was interested in this film because it looked like a fun little fantasy romp? I didn't care about the religious stuff, i'm not faithfull nor am i the kind of person to watch a film purely to mock someone's religion (who the **** sits down for 2 hours just to do that anyway). This movie just looked like fun to me.

It's all moot though, i don't know how many of you are aware of this but some muslim countries have banned this film because portrayals god and his prophets (noah in this case) are considered offensive to them; which ironically seems to jive with how some chrisitians view the movie. My country is predominantly muslim so that means i'll have to download the film or something.

One of the few sensible posts in this whole stupid thread.

those who seem to not like the film seem to be missing the entire idea and point of why he created this. This wasn't about being true to the Bible in any way, he has never said this is what the Bible is. Aronofsky wrote a graphic novel in 2010 "based" on Noah, the character, which technically the character "Noe" because it was released in France first only I believe. I own this graphic novel, although i cant read french, just seeing the pictures you can follow it pretty easily.

His work here is meant as fiction, thats all. A graphic novel he turned into a film.....He is not saying this is direct from the Bible, he just created a story of his own on based on the character Noah. THATS ALL!!! Everyone who is banning this film, or hating on it because it wasn't accurate to the Bible is completely misunderstanding it. And its not that hard to find out why Aronofsky created his graphic novel and film.

Here is a snippet of a interview back when he wrote the comic book in 2011 when he announced the film project was coming:

“I don’t think it’s a very religious story,” he said at the 2011 Provincetown International Film Festival, where he was receiving career-spanning honors. “I think it’s a great fable that’s part of so many different religions and spiritual practices. I just think it’s a great story that’s never been on film.”

I could get into the whole religion thing and is the Bible true or not, but honestly its not worth the time to debate. We all have our own beliefs. Too bad others can't accept that.

:exactly: :lecture :goodpost:

Funny thing is I did feel like this was a graphic novel version of Noah at times. Guess I wasn't that far off. But if the intent was to make a film based on that graphic novel, I think they really should have advertised it as such. Most people, myself included, didn't know about some obscure French comic book of Noah. They marketed this too everyone under the guise of the Bible story. Had they shown things like the rock creatures and stuff in the trailers they would have advertised this more honestly but also gotten a lot less people to see it too.

Bad word of mouth is going to cripple this film. Next week is already a loss for it with Cap 2 coming out, but it wouldn't surprise me if this isn't in the top 5 by next week either.

its a flood movie.

would it help if they had to spell out comparative mythology on the posters instead. :lol

The real question is why did the studio spend so much money on the making of a movie based on some obscure French Graphic Novel based on Noah?

why would they do this? what? did they think they would win audiences with this? That makes no sense.

Darren Aronofsky making a movie out of the graphic novel, I don't even fault him for that, he can do what he wants. The bigger mystery is why the studio thought this was going to be a great idea.

Flood mythology is not specific to the Old Testament, it's universal - the story resonates very broadly and globally, and believers and non-believers alike are familiar with it. So marketing-wise, right from the get-go the movie has a toe-hold in the public consciousness.

Throw in some supernatural and fantasy themes, load every second shot with CG effects, throw a couple of hot stars in the mix and what's a studio exec not love about that?

This is not what happened. Aronofsky did the same thing with The Fountain.
He wrote a script, pitched it but it was too big for him, studios would not give him that type of budget.
So he contacted artists and did the graphic novel.
Once the graphic novels done he sent them to the studios who saw more clearly what he wants to do and gave the greenlight.
The Fountain did not have a big budget as it was supposed to but thanks to perfect blue... Sorry i meant Black swan he got it this Time.

Yep the average moviegoers expecting Cécile B Demille tame version of the story gonna be surprised but i feel its a good thing seriously you really wanna see a serious version of Evan almighty? A story you know by heart.
I rather have a mad max fantasy horror drama that takes liberties and go ways i dont expect.
Im sure there are plenty of faithfull NOAH out there to satisfy the need.

Btw the original title was THE FIRST GENOCIDE, kinda sets the tone huh? ;)

I'm sold.

I don't need to....I have read the reviews and they review the same of what is in the Movie

I can open the book of Genesis in the Bible and get the TRUTH of what really went down during that time...I don't need to see the Athiest,God-Hating interpretation that Liberal Director has given to it.

You tell 'em, Teemu.

Thats like asking why is any movie made. Aronofsky has many critical acclaimed movies under his belt and has millions of fans world wide. Plus all the fans of the actors in the film as well. Just because a few people on a toy site don't like the subject matter for his Noah that he used doesn't mean his film won't make money and that millions world wide won't enjoy it. Because so far, its doing well.

As of today its made $95 million world wide. Budget was $125 million. By next weekend it will have made profit. And not to mention its getting good reviews.

Also he does graphic novels for a lot of his films. Pi, the Fountain, Noah. So I think he is a fan of the medium.

because the fountain flopped so badly?

it needs to make twice its budget, there is no way it will make any profit.... If anything i would be surprised if he ever makes any other type of blockbuster ever

the controversy it stirred with the "faithful" kinda gave this movie a rebound effect. its doing well despite the negative hype. :lol

Aronofsky i dont think goes out seeking blockbust films. He takes on things he is interested in. The Fountain was low budget and ya might have not done well at the box office but he made the Wrestler and Black Swan after that and got numerous accolades for both. Black Swan had a $13 million budget and grossed $329 million worldwide. I mean thats huge!!! So even if Noah doesnt make double the $125 million budget, he is far from a bad director. Box office numbers mean nothing. Michael Bay films have made billions of dollars. Does anyone put him on the "Greatest Directors of his Generation" list? I highly doubt it.

Aronofsky is pretty known as one of the more creative directors out there and likes to take on interesting subject matter. Noah was going to be controversial from the start. Anything based on any thing religious is going to be controversial. But it was always touted as Fiction based off his graphic novel which was based on the character and story of Noah..the key word there is "based". He never claimed "I am making Noah direct from the Bible". I think people think that sometimes. They hear the name Noah and if its not direct interpretation of the Bible, some people just go crazy. And even like Bruce Almighty even had its share of people thinking it was blasphemy. It gets kind of silly.

Aronofsky is a great filmmaker and story teller. I have loved all his films, even The Fountain. I thought it was beautifully done.
