Did anyone actually stop to look at the boxed figures in the hi-rez pics (and I mean click on them for large pics)? The paint jobs on the beard in those pics look pretty good. Sure, the faces are slightly obscured. However, the paint job doesn't look as blotchy on the beard as the loose fig pics. I think 2 factors are in play here:

1.) It looks like the lighting was set up at an angle that exacerbated the glossy look/shine of the beard. That "gloss" eliminated alot of the detail that I believe is still present in the "hands-on" version.

2.) Different figures will have different levels of paint job. You would hope the photographer would pick out the best representation. However, for all we know, she opened a case and grabbed the first box she saw. So, it may still be a crap shoot. But I still have a feeling the production figures will have a high rate of quality to the paint jobs.

As for people whining about the demo version from the toy shows... why do you always set yourself up for disappointment? A mass-produced item is NOT going to look as nice as a hand-painted prototype. I would be willing to bet the artist spent dozens of hours prepping that Toy Faire figure. If the production model took that long, it would cost in the hundreds, and be limited to hundreds. We have to learn to take the good with the bad. I still say its the best Obi figure ever made.

P.S. Yes, Collector Kong or King Freak or whatever he likes to be called, can be rude and childish on this forum. However, he's a complete a$$ on Rebelscum. So, lets be thankful, he at least shows some decorum here. And, I will say it again.. even though it does smack of hypocricy since I am addressing him: STOP FEEDING THE TROLLS and they will go back under their bridge for a nice long nap.

He definitely needs that hint of blonde/red in his hair and beard.

The hair color on the proto in that pic looks great, but everything esle (especially the eyes) look better on ther production figure.

I think people are going to have to realize that the prototypes are always going to have nicer paint apps than the production pieces. Just like a nicely painted custom, the prototype is a one off piece that gets lots of attention. I'm astounded at times by the level of perfection people demand in a $50 figure.

Yup, they can have more time taken. Even as nice as the production pieces come out they more often than not will be short of the protos. Because those can have all the time in the world taken on them. I know people seem to expect the world on these and while they have the right to I kind of just shake my head.

Hey Josh, how often do you get hi-res versions of the production pics? I remember asking you for some once and they weren't available.

Whenever they go up. I try to wait till SS posts them in the newsletter but I was a tad early today.

I'm the first to point out a 1 off custom to a mass produced figures. But production numbers, figure prep time or skill has nothing to do with getting a color to match a prototype.

seriously though how much on average for a custom paint on a 12"...has anyone had it done.

PM Customikey or Dark Artist or one of the other painters from the custom section.
EDIT: Mikey just barely beat me to it.

I agree with you EvilFace, I can understand the quality of the paint job not meeting a custom, but they should be able to match the colors at least.

I remember when I first saw pics of Luke being posted on SST I was pretty dissapointed but now that I have seen Luke and lived with Luke I completely 100% prefer the production..

I hope thats the way it is with Obi and I think it will be. Besides, that robe is really cool.

I agree. I'm beginning to get a little disappointed in how vastly different the paint jobs on these have begun to differ from the prototype.

Obi-wans hair and beard color are far too dark and his tunic was not white in ROTS at all. A simple google search easily reveals that and these guys have access to Lucasfilm reference photos?

After all this wait due to "corrections" I'm surprised he isn't more accurate. With roughly 9 months from the time the proto pics were posted until now there really isn't any excuse they didn't see how incorrectly painted the production version was coming along and fix it. Especially after saying he was delayed to fix his cloak color. I'm baffled how that much effort went into correcting one fabric color while another is still so blatantly wrong.

If SS cannot make the factory get their paint ops down then they need to hire another factory, plain and simple. I'm starting to feel a little shorted in getting excited over the pics at ordering time and then groaning when I see the production ones.

I certainly hope they are striving for the factory to do the same paint job as their prototype but I'm beginning to wonder if they are cutting corners to save costs.

I'm now very fearful to see production Qui-Gon and that sucks.:(

Just keep in mind that the production photos, as usual are very flat and completely unlike what he'll look like in your hands. Remember how we all thought Luke looked terrible in the prod photos? same for Han! Then they were shipped, and the majority could see the flaws, but thought they weren't nearly as bad as the prod photos made them out to be.

$40 is all? sweet. I'll wait till i see it in hand but if the eyebrows/hair/beard are that dark I'll pay it. That would make it a $100 figure and it's worth it to me.

Yup, I clicked on every last one of them, and scrolled around my monitor to look at every last bit of their hi-res detail, and you know what? They still show his hair and beard to be the wrong color.
As I posted earlier, I don't think color matching should not be that much to ask for. Maybe it is. I don't think we can attribute these differneces to lighting in the photos either. The two look like night and day in the photos that I believe Darth waller posted initially (thanks by the way). Again I keep saying photos becasue that's all we have to go on right now.

As far as comments such as "people whining about the demo version from the toy shows".....C'mon have a little respect for other people's opinion's rather than disregarding them as whining. I'm not sure if your comment was directed at me or not, but I personally think I made a valid point. If the product doesn't look like what was advertised, why wouldn't you voice your opinion? Or maybe you should join collector freak under that troll bridge. It's just rude. Sorry to be blunt, but why is that people that are satisfied with these figures get so bent out of shape when others are less than satisfied with them?

It used to be $15 (I think) before he found out others were charging around $40. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure his repaints are worth every cent because they look great. I know if I tried to repaint Obi he would look worse than that Habro pic floating around.

I WAS EXPECTING SOMETHING SOMEWHAT CLOSER TO THIS OR THE PROTO!

Disclaimer:please understand I am basing my comments based on the production photos and reserve final judgment until I see him in hand.

"The Obi production piece is very close to the SDCC display Obi" - Brant

I'm paraphrasing Brant (SSC Operations) in a SDCC chat session, unfortunately the SSC QC in China got it wrong again based on these pics of the actual production piece -- the hair is way too dark, eyebrows blown again, beard dark brown not light brown and I hope the eye color is at least okay. Because of this there will be another Huuuuge Obi repaint thread and I'm sorry but I am getting tired of receiving products which looked so great in terms of "correct paint apps coloring" in prototype changed to an inaccurate and non-representative piece in production...

Yeah, some of you artists can change that, but the rest of us (all except about 5 of you) either have to live with it or shell out another $50 to get it to look like it was supposed to look and I've just about had it.

I will base my final judgment when I receive this item but my suspicion is this is another great sculpt blown by bad oversight management at the China paint factory. Can I please ask what is the big ****** problem anyway? You paint one head like the display or prototype and use it as your approved paint app head at the factory, everyone paints the head like that, using those colors, watchful not to overpaint in certain areas (like eyebrows) and a Factory operations manager ensures they are painted correctly before SSC Operations approves them for shipment...

How can no-one be paying attention here, to anakins lips, eyebrows, and now this dark hair color change? I am really hoping not to be disappointed Again!

VERY disappointed in the paint apps.

Seriously, this one is a kick in the gut. The prototype shown at SDCC was miles better.

I couldn't agree more. The one on display at SDCC looked so good it was scary so to see these pics of the final product is a HUGE disappointment. The sculpt is still great, but Sideshow needs some serious help with their paint applications because Obi-Wan looks atrocious.
