I'd prefer it be too dark than too light - at least if its too dark drybrushing with a lighter colour will fix it quite easily.... which will also bring out the highlights.

Being too light is a little more difficult to fix. You would have to repaint the whole thing and then do the drybrushing as well.

Judging from the hi-res closeup, I think the paint apps are quite good. Yes the hair and beard are a bit darker and not as nicely blended as the prototype, but it's still a quality paintjob. The only thing I would complain about is the lazy left eye, but you're not really gonna notice when it's sitting on a shelf.

I think people are going to have to realize that the prototypes are always going to have nicer paint apps than the production pieces. Just like a nicely painted custom, the prototype is a one off piece that gets lots of attention. I'm astounded at times by the level of perfection people demand in a $50 figure.

I wish sideshow had access to those scans. I'd buy EVERYTHING they put out.

While I still like the figure I do think the paint aps here suffered again. The proto was DEAD ON, but there is no blending to speak of and as others have said it is too dark. My biggest problem is where the beard meets his cheeks.....zero blending at all.

I do still really like the figure though and am looking forward to getting it.

VERY disappointed in the paint apps.

Seriously, this one is a kick in the gut. The prototype shown at SDCC was miles better.

:monkey2

Is it me or has the exclusive changed? It now says"the blaster used to defeat General Grievous!" I thought before it said General Grievous' blaster. I know they are one and the same, but perhaps if it was changed that a General Grievous could be in the works?

The hair is a bit too dark, but he looks great anyway. The proto was golden at SDCC though.

I think SSC should just start painstakingly hand painting each figure, release 2-3 figures a year and charge $200 a pop. Then maybe people will finally be satisfied with the paintjobs.

now that i know that those pics weren't made up(went to SS's site to check) I'm worried about this one. i'm holding judgement till i see it in person though.

I swear if the factory painters indeed bungled this one I WILL sit out this line for a while and join Khev and others in PF-only purchases. I'll keep Maul and Qui-Gon on order, but cancel the others.

And while we're on the subject, we all might as well prepare for the production paint apps on stuff like Jabba to be underwheling as well. :monkey2

Yes. The select few that actually buy these things would be really happy. At the start, $60 was too much for me even... but that was because I felt the sculpt and paint didn't reflect the price I'm paying. (it's great but not GREAT).

So for $200... i'd probably get Vader and stop.

No, then each figure will be just a little different and someone will always like the one they don't have better. You would think that people have learned that the real thing always ends up looking 20x better in person than in any picture.

Well I imagine this is true to a degree. A prototype is the early stage for the product, sometimes never seeing the light of day outside of a company. Sideshow is using these as their main form of advertising though. These prototypes or pre-production pieces are what we are seeing on the order page. They are what we are seeing at the conventions and shows. So why is it that we shouldn't expect the production pieces to look the same or at the very least, extremely close to these pre-production pieces? In my eyes at least, the hair color on Obi Wan is glaringly off from what I expected. I would expect the factory to get something so simple as using the the correct colors right.

It is easy for the customizers on this board to blow this off as something easily fixed, but I tried my hand at a re-paint on Anakin's glaringly off lips, and let me tell you, it's not easy. It's also not something I plan on having to do routinely. I don't want to say these figures are becoming a crap shoot, but at times that is how I feel about this line. I think we were all expecting a home run on Obi Wan and from what I am seeing, I don't think that is what was delivered. I'm astounded at times by the issues with product that collectors pass off so easily.

I'm sorry if this comes off as a rant, it's not meant to be. I am glad most people seem to be ok with this one. Personally I am initially disappointed. I hope once I have this figure in hand my opinion of it will change.

Hey CF, let's try this better

I think this is a better comparison.

I'm still getting both because they both rock.:rock :rock2 :clap

All I can say to people who are unhappy with prototype vs production paint apps is they should just get out now becuase it's never going to change. The production apps are always going to be of a somewhat lower quality. That's just the difference between a custom piece and a mass produced one.

it's like SS likes to taunt us with "what could have been" by having amazing proto figures at the conventions. But when the production pieces come out it leaves much to be desired.

That GG statue is going to be amazing.

I'll withhold final judgment until I get him, but to be completely honest, these pics are worrisome.

Just my .02.

I agree completely.

If this is what we can expect on a production piece I might be out of this line. I'll hold final judgement until I have the figure in hand, but my first gut reaction is disappointment. It almost looks as if the painters switched the two colors that were used for his hair. Instead of looking more blond with darker bits, it's dark with subtle blonde hi-lites.
Sideshow may have bungled a bit with the darker colored hair, but I've seen far worse (like Gentle Giant's Gui-Gon bust). If the hair was lighter in color then the outlines of the beard and eyebrows would be less noticeable and make all the difference. I had a more unfavorable opinion about the paint until I saw the Hi-Res images, looks much better there and may improve even more once it's in hand.
Also, every one of these figures is hand painted, on a mass production line. Unless Sideshow uses tempo paint application, every one will look slightly different. Some look better, some look worse. Unfortunately Tempo paint apps would also drive up production costs.

Absolutely! No one is perfect. That picture of the Qui-Gon bust that was posted looks atrocious. I just thought that after the color issues with Anakin's hair and lips that this would have been a thing of the past. Unfortunately it will probably continue with future figures. If it does my collecting this line certainly won't.
