Mike, I think you've done an EXCELLENT job removing the surprised look off his face. I didn't know it could be done! I also don't think those white dots look distracting, but I am curious what eyes look like without them and if eyes really do stand out less without them sometimes. Have any examples?

The expression in Luke's eyes look great, although you probably already notice that his left pupil is drooping a bit. How hard is that to fix? I can't even imagine how hard it is to draw matching pupils.:google

Well I finally got my 12" Anakin yesterday and I'll admit that he looks 100x better in person. The lips seem fine in person compared to all the pics I've seen. I think a lot has to do with the lighting and angle at which he is dislplayed.

I know...the white dot is in the eye of the beholder...:lol

I just personally dislike it due to the fact that, to me, 1/6 scale is large enough to not warrant accentuation of effect, like a smaller scale usually needs. That also includes extraneous shading too.

My attitude is, let the ambient light affect the figure as it does in life. (demanding better photos of course)
But, to many, that dot, and other such details, are part of what make a toy look better.
I can live with that.

Anyway, I sure do NOT invite some kind of competition between myself and your resident expert-in-arms, Customikey, who's custom work I greatly respect and envy! So please, no comparisons please. I HATE competition in Art! I find the notion abhorrant. Even if the Clash of the Titans line was funny, I am certainly no Titan. :monkey1
Good line from the movie Excalibur, from Merlin to Arthur:
"There's always something cleverer than yourself!"
I mean, have you guys seen that asian guy's handmade Anakin with hair!?!?! WOOHOO! MAN! That's a custom! :eek

So, again, a thanks to all who have welcomed me here with open arms, (especially with the kind comments about my Anakin) and do know that I will share what I can, when I can with you all. That includes techniques as well. I mean, what I do is MY way, but if any of the info helps you guys to think through your own repaint or touchup ideas, so be it. As I see it, ideas, once out there for all to see, are free.

So...on to the next wave...

I'll post a pic of my finished figure in his attire for your review and then we can see if I have gotten it right.

BTW, Customikey, that Luke head is sweet dude! Like it!

More to come... :chew

Nice quote from an excellent movie... one of my top 5! And a film that deserves figures... a merlin would be awesome! Anyway, great work and welcome to the board!

lol. i have one of those custom Ani being made by Vancei now. WEEE! but i have to say Les, ur Ani repaint/modified sculpt looks more like Hayden. Vancei's is VERY close but urs (and the original SS sculptor of course) is just dead on! that "shaving" REALLY made a huge difference on that Dudley Do-right chin.

i never really liked the white eye dot. a good glossing does it fine for me.
and what happened to the Ani custom u had up on Ebay Hurricane? Ebay still yanking ur listings because of keywords or something?

Could someone show a pic of a 1/6 figure without the white dot? I've been wondering if Luke would look less surprised without it.

Pilot Luke looks sleepy.
I think it looks kinda cool like that, several days in that tiny cockpit in hyperspace and I'd be sleepy. Bitchy as hell too.

Grr. I hadn't noticed till you pointed it out. Hell, that'd be a lot of work to fix...
Hmm. Let's never speak of it again.:lol

I was just wondering if any of you guys(custommikey, les, hurricane?)are familiar with a custom painter out of Asia by the name of JC Hong? The repainted Luke that was posted by Melvin in this thread is his work.I was curious if any of you guys had any insight into his techniques and what medium is he using(airbrush?)The main thing that stands out to me is his eye work,it is absolutely flawless and looks real. Is he doing something different than everybody else?Different paint,gloss,etc..?? I must learn to paint like this guy!!:D

Yeah, it looks like an airbrush... just amazing detail... Any man who did that with a brush would have to be Jesus himself.. But who knows... J..C.. Hong?? :lol

I might actually repaint my Luke and Anakin head now... after seeing how great Mikey's and Les's came out!! I'm itching to try!! :D

JC Hong paints Arnie Kim's custom figures, among others. If you prowl JC's site or Arnie's site sooner or later you'll find some shots of JC at his workbench. I think no tool is off limits to him.

Arnie's figures have glass eye inserts, but JC has a number of Sideshow repaints on his site. The painted eye "corneas" are a mystery, as are the sweat-blobs he puts on some of the fighting Bruce Lee figures (see the white-clad ETD Bruce Lee on Arnie's site). I'd love to know what clear material he uses. I've even wondered if he might be thinning Goop® or silicon calk with alcohol or something and applying it with a small brush. Gotta go experiment with that stuff...

Oh, if you go to Arnie's site...scroll down to just above the shot of the Enterbay guys on the plane, there's a play-bar where you can pause the music...

Here are some pics of the eyes he paints,by the looks of the eyes on the Superman it looks as though it is done by brush and that the secret is in the gloss??? Just guessing...........

Hey Gruff, when do you think you'll be posting pics of your Les Ani?

Les shipped yesterday, so I figure I'll have it Friday, maybe Thursday. Waycross GA to Woodland Hills CA. Probably Friday. Couple surprises coming too. One to post under Historical/Military, Anakin for this forum, two others for the Horror forum -- the Bela I previewed, and one other...wait and see.

Let's hope all went well with his Dad's surgery today.
