Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

Not an Alien movie. You guys really should've listened to Ridley. He said this wasn't a direct prequel what, like seven times? However many it was, that statement popped up everywhere.

Some don't listen.

I never said I was expecting an Alien prequel, I'm just stating that IMO it was sub-par not only in comparison to the other Alien films but also as a sci-fi film in general.

Heck, I would have PREFERRED that it had NOTHING to do with the Alien universe. But as it is, it IS an Alien movie. Unless you guys are throwing out the fact that it has the Weyland company AND Space Jockeys AND the ship AND uses Giger's 'Alien Pyramid' design that he did for the first movie as the "base" in Prometheus. In which case, its clearly you guys are not paying attention to the movie you are so fervently defending. :lecture

Re: Prometheus Q&A (SPOILERS)

I think we became too powerful. Look at the way the Engineer looked and touched David; he knew man had the power to create something new.

I think "we became too powerful" would be way too weak. There was no power to the humans on an integalactic scale 2000 years ago when they plotted to come back to earth.

Another thing people seem to keep skipping over is that the engineers seemed to be just as disoriented coming out of stasis as humans. Imagine being on a floating space station going to sleep and waking up 2000 years later and theres like 5 cows surrounding you in space of all places and one of them is speaking english to you. Probably not the first thing you were expecting. Then David probably said something like "Dude, you've been in stasis for 2000 years, we're from earth..." and this jolted him like oh crap, earthlings are still alive, we screwed the pooch on this mission.

And even if they want to develop the why further, they could just go the route of saying the humans killed an engineer during approximately AD, they don't have to take the space jesus route and say it was Jesus himself. They can be as vague as they were with what planet was "gardened" in the opening scene.

Re: Official Alien Prequel/Prometheus Discussion Thread

This thread should now be for just non-spoiler reviews and general discussion. More intense discussion should occur in the spoiler thread.

I had high hopes for this film that have been mitigated by the less than glowing reviews that have come out. However I enjoyed it a lot, more as a science fiction film that raises a lot of questions rather than a suspenseful horror film as all the other Alien films have been.

I don't see how anyone, Ridley included, can say this isn't a prequel. It's in the same world and we get the answers to some minor questions that a viewer might have had upon viewing ALIEN for the first time. But it also broadens the universe created in that film far beyond the less than inspiring Alien Vs. Predator, and opens it up to tell far more interesting stories than just a couple of monsters pounding the ____ out of each other.

Ridley is very much a visual storyteller - has been his entire career, although his films often are a bit deeper than his brother's, who also is mostly a visualist. But in this film he's also asking questions (and not providing too many answers) that are core to the human condition. Occasionally these questions are clunky and poorly expressed, but you have to credit him and the writers for trying to move beyond yet another creature feature. His best films, Blade Runner included, also ask these questions and I'd include Prometheus in a list of his best films.

People have criticized the characters as exhibiting poor judgement. But these bad decisions aren't born out of plot necessity such as sending a nubile blond to the basement just to get munched on. These choices are made by flawed characters that are motivated by fear, self-preservation, insecurity and a host of other flaws that all humans have and might exhibit in a such a situation. These flaws speak to the greater questions being asked by the film itself.

As to the cast in the film - it was absolutely necessary to have an actress of Charlize's quality as Vickers. You can sympathize with her and her decisions, just as you can hate her for them. Fassbender, as always, is a revelation and his channeling of Peter O'Toole (if Peter O'Toole was a robot) is amazing. Noomi was a strange but excellent choice for Shaw - I can't imagine a lot of other actors being able to summon the physicality called for in the role.

I can see where some people might be disappointed in this movie - it's not really a suspense film or an action film although it has plenty of elements of both. But I think it will hold up on repeated viewings and will grow in reputation over the years, just as ALIEN and Blade Runner have.

As I mentioned, there are a lot of questions left unanswered by this film - but they are the sort of questions that make a work of art great and will probably keep the spoiler thread alive for many months. I'd recommend you see the film with an open mind - not expecting an Alien film - and let us know what you think.

Re: Prometheus - Spoiler thread!

Maybe David said to the Engineer: you must kill these humans because they are here to kill you.

That does raise an interesting point. How would we know exactly what he said when two people were telling him to ask different things?

They well and truly screwed up.:lol

Haha, I wouldn't put it past him to say that to him; sneaky bastard.:lol

There is going to be another movie after this one. In Alien the Space Jocky was in the chair behind the gun with his stomach blown out and that didnt happen in this one.

That's what I mean. He was a sneaky bastard like goose said, and who knows who really programmed him last... Weyland, Vickers, someone else with another agenda?

I have a feeling he said something other than what was asked of him. Maybe he said to the engineer what he said in the film:

"The son wants to kill the father."

Something tells me that if you add it all together David was able to overcome his programming. Maybe not all of it, but I think he had an agenda all his own ultimately. He had way too many human times in the film for someone who wasn't to have any emotions.

Re: Prometheus - Spoiler thread!

Not sure David has become sentient but he's definitely 'up to something' throughout the film. The assumption is he's working Weyland's agenda upon the Weyland reveal... but I think that is a red herring and his real agenda is one of those open-endings that writers can explore or abuse in a sequel.

Interesting, they did create a whole engineer language for the film. Is it in the book?

Re: Prometheus - Spoiler thread!
