Do it Mag. DO IT. There should be an exposure bracketing setting in your camera menu. Set it up for 2 stops up/over and your golden. :) (pack a tripod) and

Tried my hand at it with a couple today. Haven't concerted it I'm Photomatix yet but hoping it works.... I'll post it if it turns out.

Diggin the pics Zach. They would lend themselves very well to HDR's which I just started messing with today...

I think I'm in love. lol I never really felt comfortable with landscapes, but I'm really liking how they turn out as HDR's.

Those are magical, beeshaw! I haven't followed all of your work, but have you thought of doing greeting cards?

Thanks AA! I haven't...but that may be something to look into... ;)

Are there any free editing programmes that I can find online that allow the user to make HDR images?

There are... most free ones have severe limitations though (watermarks...). I tried a few out. Photomatix Pro 4.2 is what I've been playing with. If you know where to look you should have no troubles finding it. ;)

How good is photomax at using single shots? I know a good HDR shoot requires 3 different variations but I have a Nikon D3100 and it is harder to use that.

If it's only one exposure, it's not an HDR. You can mess with the contrast, black levels and saturation to get the same 'look' as an HDR. Same idea as using an HDR filter on your iPhone... but really that's all it is. A filter.

I would give it a shot on your D3100 BadMoon. Granted it would be easier if you had exposure bracketing, but it's still doable. A tripod and a remote shutter release are essential though.

You do not NEED autobracket to take HDR's - it just makes it easier & means less fiddling about. Here is how to take HDR pics without AEB;

1. Put camera on tripod.
2. Turn off Auto ISO (if you have it on, it may be on by default).
3. Set mode to aperture priority (A). Set aperture to get a decent depth of field - f16 or so.
4. Take a shot - this will be your 'normal' exposure, ie 0EV
5. Dial in a stop under exposed - use the +/- EV button/wheel until it says -1.0EV.
6. Take the shot.
7. Repeat taking images by adjusting the +/- EV comp wheel until you have a series like -2EV, -1EV, 0EV, +1EV, +2EV.

I'm far from an expert though... Just messing around and exploring. :)

So I just got instagram for my phone. Was interested to see what it was. I'm surprised at the pictures you can get out of it.

Thanks so much ZaCH. I don't know what I did but it did come out kind of eerie. I wish I could replicate it.
