The problem is you can't slice up the movie and make the best calls for what information needs to stay and what can go sometimes because you still know the missing pieces in your head so you can't experience the pieces you keep without that so you don't full get how confused the audience might be.

Im confused.

AWE for me was always the weakest of the bunch. All of the double crossing and underhanded deals became annoying even though it was supposd to be done in a "tongue in cheek" style of farce. I loved the inclusion of Davy Jones but honestly the move to more fantasy with Calypso and the Davy Jones' heart plot elements made it more laughable. Essentially instead of ramping up I think both sequels would have been better off going subtile. Between Davy Jones and Calypso and the Netherworld and the Pirate Kings and conclusion of the personal storylines there was too much going on whereas the first film had a fairly clear plot that seemed to all be cohesive.

Definitely agree. It was better as an old fashioned, swashbuckling adventure film with a hint of the supernatural.

My version of Davy Jones would have been a ghostly human, honestly. Calypso wouldn't have been in the movies at all, outside of the legend of Jones "falling in love with the sea" - a did he, or didn't he kind of thing. No sea monsters or fishmen - just ghosts of dead sailors. I wouldn't have bothered with the pirate lord plot at all and cut out Sao Feng completely. My way of bringing Barbossa back? He could have been a ghost serving on board the Dutchmen and not be allowed to rest in peace. No miracle ressurection and waste of a fantastic death scene that way.

Sometimes a smaller scale and a more subtle supernatural tone really is the way to go.

You're completely right and I hope the tone of this new one shifts back to the not as fantasy based swashbuckling original. That said, AWE is not nearly as terrible as so make it out to be especially upon repeat viewing when you figure out wtf is happening. :D

gotta agree, while AWE was fun for the action, i think for me the only problem was too many action scenes and not enough of the small heartfelt moments. i came home from the theater exhausted, modern action films just don't let up. they are like video games, with one action sequence after another and little time for real story telling, character development or atmosphere. the best scene in the current film is actually the first, where Keira Knightly paddles a canoe into singapore pirate stronghold. it's the only scene that takes the time to set things up. the special effects sequences were spectacular but so spectacular to be obviously fake, no matter how well done they are. the most "romantic" sequence is the one where Keira and Orlando get married in the middle of a swordfight in boarding of the ship that's heading down a whirlpool. i missed the small moments like pirates 1 that had those quiet normal scenes with keria and bloom that were more romantic. i actually prefer those old errol flynn adventures to the piartes movies of today.

I thought some of their awkward scenes before (and just after) rescuing Jack were pretty good. I thought it did a good job showing that Will had never mentioned seeing her kiss Jack, but that he was backing off from her thinking she loved Jack over him, while at the same time she was feeling guilty about leaving Jack to the Kraken and was withdrawing from Will.

And then if I recall correctly just after they save Jack there was the scene where Will was upset she didn't tell him what she did and took a "we could have gotten through it together" stance, which is ironic since at the same time he was going it alone and not telling her his plan to free his dad.

I also thought the scene with Barbossa and Jack next to the dead Kraken was pretty good. "The world's not smaller, there's just less in it." Is probably one of my all time favorite movie lines.

But I agree that overall the pace of the movie was much faster and frantic and I think it suffered from that. I agree with Maulfan those two movies could have and should have been a trilogy of their own. Woulda been nice if they were a wee bit shorter as well.

Supermodel/Actress Gemma Ward Cast in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Posted on Monday, June 14th, 2010 by Peter Sciretta

Supermodel turned actor Gemma Ward (The Strangers, The Black Balloon) has been cast for a role in producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Rob Marshall ’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. According to the report from The Courier Mail, Ward has been cast in a “small speaking part” as a mermaid, but won’t shoot her scenes until August. I’m sure Ward will probably play a friend of Syrena, “a beautiful and alluring young mermaid” played by French Actress Astrid Bergès-Frisbey.

Previously:
Ward joins the already announced cast of Johnny Depp, who is reprising his role of Captain Jack Sparrow, Ian McShane who will play Edward Teach, better known as the legendary pirate Blackbeard, a notorious black-bearded pirate who operated around the West Indies and the eastern coast of the American colonies during the early 1700s, and famously piloted the ship Queen Anne’s Revenge, Penelope Cruz, who will be playing Blackbeard’s daughter, “Sparrow’s foil and equal in many ways”, and French Actress Astrid Bergès-Frisbey who will play a beautiful and alluring young mermaid named Syrena.

Stephen Graham (Public Enemies, This Is England, Gangs of New York, Band of Brothers and Snatch) will be “Scram, a Machiavellian pirate,” who’ll be “a sidekick to Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow.” Max Irons (Dorian Gray and Being Julia. Graham), the 24-year-old son of actors Jeremy Irons and Sinéad Cusack, will play the character of Scram, a character whom we have no more details about. British actor Sam Claflin (The Pillars of the Earth in Budapest) will “star in the key role of Philip, a youthful missionary.”

The fourth film will be based on Tim Powers’ pirate novel On Stranger Tides which was optioned by Disney years ago. The novel tells the story of Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth. Here’s the plot of the novel:

Puppeteer John Chandagnac, bound for Jamaica to recover stolen money from his uncle, becomes Jack Shandy after pirates attack his ship and force him to join their crew. Shandy’s struggle to accept his new life grounds the story for readers, even as Blackbeard and vodun magicians whisk everyone away to dreamlike lands where the Fountain of Youth itself awaits. The chaotic sea battles sing, though at times key events happen so quickly that they get lost in the shuffle as Jack tries to comprehend where he’s going and what’s at stake.

Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot wrote the screenplay. Beginning in June, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” will film entirely on location in Hawaii, Great Britain and Los Angeles. The film, which will be shot with 3D cameras, is scheduled to hit theaters on May 20th, 2011.

A lot of miscasting imvho
And btw, what are they smoking, Stephen Graham WAS NOT in Band of Brothers!
Gemma Ward AND Penelope? Ewww I thought it couldn't get any worse!

I have always been puzzled by the popularity of these movies? :dunno
I did not even enjoy the first one that much.

Do you guys who are fans feel there should be another one?

While the 2nd and 3rd weren't as good as the first I still like them all and I am happy to see another one.

I liked the series ending the way it did. I felt it brought the characters around full circle and told the story. That said, I enjoyed all three immensely and if this one is at least as good as the last two I will enjoy it and I don't mind it being made. But if it sucks I'm going to be very disappointed.

Same here :lecture

The only thing i don't like about the first three movies are Elizabeth and Will. So i'm very :D and :yess: that they won't return. I'm also very :D that Penelope Cruz is in it :monkey5

I enjoyed them, but the last one had some very silly elements. I'd like to see another one hopefully to get back to the fun of the first two.
