well just finished watching the movie. found a really good quality version on the internet. as a pirates franchise fan l hate to say it, but l didn't like this one at all. it was very boring. no ships, really no sword fighting, except at the end. even that was only a couple minutes. boring new characters. for me the most exciting part was the beginning when jack escaped from the hall and swung on the chandelier and then was riding the carriages. even that was boring compared to the other movie escape scenes.

l think this movie was bad script, and bad directing.

Wow, this movie made a ton of money.

I still think it's crazy that movie costs have gone up so high. Back in 2005 the $200 million cost of King Kong was ridiculous, but this film which has much less expensive effects costs $250 million. Even if you count the cost of actors and sets, that's still ridiculous.

Not surprised at all it making that much. The midnight showing I went to was packed and basically a sell out. What I'll be curios is to see how much it makes going forward seeing as its pretty mixed in reviews.

I hate to say it as a fan of the series but I was really disappointed with this one. In general it felt very forced, especially the first 30 minutes. It got a little better when Blackbeard appeared but after his dramatic entrance he rapidly got less interesting as things progressed.
I don't think Depp phoned it in - he was just not well served by the writing.
I wish they had dumped Elliot and Rossio and kept Verbinski. The writers are not nearly as clever as they think they are. Marshall did what he could to ape Verbinski's style but only occasionally generated the energy or mood, IMO. I was stoked a week ago when I heard that the script for 5 was already turned in but now that just makes me think it will be as half-assed as this one.
It wasn't downright awful, there were good bits in there. If I had to pick a high-point it would be the Jack/Barbossa conversation while tied to the trees. The actors have great chemistry and the characters have such a complicated history that it's always fun when they interact. Unfortunately it was immediately followed by Jack's lazily written and poorly executed escape.
Just for the few good Sparrow gags and Barbossa stuff I'd give it a 4/10. And that's not coming from a hater. I love 1-3, warts and all.
This felt like one of Disney's direct-to-video animated sequels.

I am glad some folks enjoyed it - my sister-in-law saw it twice, so what do I know? Maybe we'll get a better sequel down the line with all the loot this one is generating. And I'm excited for the HT figure so I'm not going to complain too much.

Just my opinion, not interested in buckling swashes over it.

I wish they'd explaind the X on his face, some things don't need a back story but that just seems so odd, what was the thought process, put an x on my cheek, yeah, let's do that. It's too perfect to be a random scar and it's an odd place for a mark of punishment.

I'm a huge Pirates fan, I even liked 2 and 3. But despite Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, Rush, Depp all being great and fun to look at in costume - this movie had so many plot and character problems that it really drags down the franchise. Hardly any decision any character makes is consistent with what we know of them and the story seems pieced together to get to what the writers must have thought were cool set pieces.

Mermaids? Why? A captured missionary? No point. Angelica just loves her Daddy? For what possible reason? Man, it's easier to list what worked rather than what didn't.

What worked? The art direction and costuming. The score built on the past work and didn't kill it. But other than that...

Mermaids? Why?

Because they're awesome! And HOT!

And I thought they worked great as a plot device. :dunno

A captured missionary?

Because Angelica wants here father's soul to be saved.

There is actually a message in this movie about faith that I really liked. I absolutely loved it when the Spanish showed up and destroyed the "pagan temple" because only God can grant eternal life. The presence of the missionary and his lines, were part of this tone.

I actually think this is the first Pirates film to have a message. The nice thing is that the message is not pushed down your throat, so you can ignore it if you want. For my part, it added a lot to the film and actually would be the reason for a second viewing.

Angelica just loves her Daddy? For what possible reason?

He is pretty damn unloveable I have to admit. But who of us doesn't want to believe that even the worst of their family can be redeemed?

Saw the movie yesterday. It's the worst of the series and I never thought I say this but I am actually a little sick of Jack Sparrow.

The previous movie worked so well because it's not just about Jack Sparrow. There are a bunch of other memorable zany characters going for the ride. In this movie, most of the supporting characters are forgettable and despite being shorter than the previous movie in runtime its feels a lot longer.

My favourite is actually Barbossa. He did the role justice and I find him a lot more interesting than Jack. I was even rooting for him the whole movie and at the end when he is a pirate again with the hat, I thought it was so cool.

Ian Macshane is a great actor but he just couldn't project the supposedly most feared pirates of all time persona. Sure he is sadistic and all but I find Lord Beckett from the previous movie a lot more repulsive.

Don't even get me started on the love scene between the christian dude and mermaid. It's so fake and laughable. And what's with the end? She brought him to her nest, mate and mate and then eat him till he is bones?

The pacing in problematic and most of the scenes feels like a mash up of material. Rob Marshall is really the wrong guy for this cause he focuses way too much on the drama and long dialogue scene. Gore Verbinski at least has great action going on and his movie is always moving. This Pirates feels like it is stalling a lot till the end.

Most likely I will still get the DX06. He is after all a memorable character in my book but I really think this should be the last of the Pirates movie.

I still think that a great After-the-credits scene would've been Blackbeard's severed head hanging from a Bowsprit. I know that the Pirates franchise is more family oriented, but after watching Deadwood, Ian Mcshane could've been much more vile as the infamous pirate.

Precisely. Ian was so repulsive and scary in Deadwood. Here, he comes across as an old man with some mid life crisis issues.

I know, I think it would've showed how cruel he could be if he had beheaded the missionary. Maybe tortured the Mermaid? Anything other than that lame-ass weenie roast we got to see. :lol

I'm thinking maybe that WAS the point. Blackbeard realized he was getting mellow with age and wanted to go back and be his younger, more vicious, ruthless self. It's a shame we didn't see that. I would have preferred that Blackbeard get to the fountain and become younger for the second half of the movie so I could actually feel some sense of threat.

I didn't understand why Angelica loved her dad so much

he didn't care if she died (more than one time) and she knew it

Also - how do you guys interpret the final scene with the mermaid and the missionary?

I expect to have that answered in a future installment. I believe he is a merperson now.

When the pirates were in the boats, waiting to catch the mermaids, one of them was talking about them. He said something like they can grant you the power to breath underwater, by giving you a kiss.

Most of the mermaids would do so, to devour a man later, but in Syrena's case I think she kissed the clergyman, so that he could come live with her or something.

At least, that's how I interpreted it! :)

I heard that the script for 5 was already turned in.

if that script is already done that fast then that tells us it was a rush job and not much thought put into it.

l don't know about you guys but l think the studios and everyone involved are using Depp now. just play jack sparrow and whether or not the movie is good we will still make tons of money. after seeing this one l think the final goal is the money not to make a great movie. there was really know action or anything spectacular in this one. which makes me think they made this for as cheap as possible. l hope if they do more they will get new writers and a new director and move the series into a different direction then this one went. this tine around jack went on a boring adventure.

as much as l would hate to say it, l think this is the one time it's a good thing Depp doesn't watch his own movies.:lecture
