I think "extreme weather" would've allowed for more creative freedom, but Hollywood and Dark Horse clearly went ahead on that without Busey's blessing. Predator in Antarctica and Siberia were cool ideas.
Yes, but in 1987 that was already partly done in 1986's Aliens. It was pitched that way, but part of the gimmick was that a team of heavily-armed bodybuilders couldn't beat the thing.
Nothing woke here. She was a well written character that I pulled for because she was believable and relatable.
So many films could learn a lesson from this movie.
I'm not even sure that the "close to woke elements" as you call them would even be seen as woke in any other era though. I mean P2 had Maria Conchita Alonso bringing Bill Paxton to his knees with one squeeze of her hand and people laughed without anyone complaining that a minority woman got the best of a toxic white male (which is no doubt how that scene would be perceived today.)
Simple story
Focusing on characters
Progression/Growth of main character
I would say Prey simply reverted back to core storytelling/filmmaking that was abandoned for years and years for woke.
Trachtenberg went out of his way to insert a few close to woke elements to appease that crowd. Which is about what I think most audiences can hope for nowadays - Just elements but not enough to take over the entire plotline. I don't know if he got final cut over trailers though. If not, the studio edited that trailer thus highlighted the woke section (i.e. "I want to be a hunter because everyone says I can't")
I do appreciate that everyone made the best decisions they could given the situation. The characters weren't doing dumb things just to drive the story forward.
What might be jarring is Midthunder is too attractive the way the production did her hair and makeup and such. She looks more like a modern person in period garb than someone from that era. Taylor Sheridan's 1883 kind of had that problem. Isabel May was so attractive and she looked so "modern" in her appeal, that it started to crack suspension of disbelief.
I do hope this means more films will focus on simpler themes and plots but push harder to give more complex characters. I appreciate this film didn't try to "talk out" everything like many other films.
It was brisk and got to the point. Like Midnight Mass did. So that also was a nice change of pace.
Good film. Be interesting to see a Predator figure coming from this movie.
Yessir. Arnold even recommended SWS to the production team after their problems with Van Damme's insect suit.Yes, but in 1987 that was already partly done in 1986's Aliens.
There's some interesting ties with Predator and Cameron besides Arnold. Like the Stan Winston's mandibles story. I'm sure you know this.
And in case you didn't know James Cameron co-wrote Rambo so ALIENS was already very much a 'Rambo meets ALIEN" movie which was a theme continued by Predator. Predator just doubled down on the "bodybuilder" aspect of Rambo while ALIENS focused on the grittier aspects of the Viet Nam war.Yessir. Arnold even recommended SWS to the production team after their problems with Van Damme's insect suit.
Sounded like Hollywood was such a small world back then. I guess it's still relatively small today, but not quite as.
i agree Wor-GarAVP is unacceptable and should be burned with fire.

Yautja world.
It doesn't take much for one turd to float above the rest.As bad a Predator 2 may be, it's a better experience than The Predator.
