I have similar memory on its initial release. Corny, crazy, poorly directed, just jumped around without much logic -- the hot summer meant something, though I'm not sure what -- crazy purple light room with crazier Gary Busey hamming it up -- the near-future outfits looked cheap with Hawaiian shirts and hats. Kids liked it because it kept moving, Pred had a lot of weapons as I remember, and the finale established a whole world of Predators and possibilities.

That said, it likely seems brilliant compared with the crap that followed in the AvP universe and then the recent attempted resurrection of the franchise.

Just from a concept perspective, Prey is much closer to what a Predator movie should be about.

Predator vs Samurais

Predator vs Pirates

Predator vs WWI soldiers

Predator vs Nazis
That's a connection to Anna's statements about the creature.

Yeah, I keep reading how much people here say they love Predator 2. :dunno
As a creature feature, it's still one of the best showcases of practical monster-making and Stan Winston's team improved upon many of the techniques they used in the first film. Alan Silvestri also returned for the soundtrack and turned in some of his best work (I think Hans Zimmer called it his favorite action movie soundtrack).

As movies, they're tonally quite different. P1 is the more atmospheric and suspenseful film. It also flips the script on the hypermacho '80s action formula, making mincemeat of its musclebound heroes halfway through. P2 is more of your run-of-the-mill actioner, so nothing particularly impressive there.

Plot-wise, they're both silly pulp stories. Commandos in a jungle or hard-boiled cops in a gang war, it's all low-brow fun at the end of the day.

Predator was pitched as 'Rambo meets Alien' so not sure it flipped any script in its time.

But yes, I forgot about Silvestri's amazing score for Predator 2 -- one of my favorites of his, if not my favorite. I remember listening to Predator 2 and Ricochet for years.

Predator never had the class, grace or visionary artistry of Alien in either filmmaking or design.

It was pitched that way, but part of the gimmick was that a team of heavily-armed bodybuilders couldn't beat the thing. Their metaphorical and literal big guns were only there to prove the creature's strength. I guess it's closer to First Blood in that the protagonist has to use natural means? I certainly wouldn't compare the theme or "lesson" of Predator to the later Rambos.

Very true. Both are tied for me, but for very different reasons.

Oh that's right. Something about the heat that brings him out. They dropped that little gem of a plot-point soon after P2, didn't they?
They mention it in P2 as well. Busey tells Glover that the monsters are drawn to heat and conflict. Must bring out the most impressive prey.

I think "extreme weather" would've allowed for more creative freedom, but Hollywood and Dark Horse clearly went ahead on that without Busey's blessing. :lol Predator in Antarctica and Siberia were cool ideas.

Alien is a master class in film making, and in building atmosphere.

The thing that struck me about Prey was that it looked like it set out to be something more than a run of the mill monster movie.

After how incredibly bad The Predator was, a lot of us thought the Predator movies were done, but with how awesome Prey turned out to be, there's still hope for this franchise yet.....:)

I like that for new viewers going forward who watch Prey and Predator in chronological order either Billy or Anna might seem like they're going to be the new main character due to each of them having elements that overlap with Naru. Then when Billy dies and Anna flees it'll be "uh oh, this Dutch guy is in for the fight of his life."

I also like that people watching Prey and then P1 for the first time won't have Dutch hiding under mud spoiled nor the Predator's sound mimicking ability.

I’ve watched it a second time. The things I disliked the most about this movie without spoiling anything was the design of the Predator (the ‘87 design is simply the best), the cgi, and the retcon scene involving the Elder Predator in P2. Overall good movie though.

My ranking of Predator films:

1. Predator
2. Predator 2
3. Predators / Prey (tied)
4. AVPR (due to Wolf)
5. AVP
6. The Predator

I still wanna see explorers going to the Pred Homeworld and someone having a Predator Killer type armor but I could definitely go with feudal a Japan or WW2 theme, as well. I’m pretty easy to please.
