Classic Predator Review+Photos
Finally got a chance to stay home and take some natural-light photos of this guy. What an incredible figure! Hot Toys has truly reached a new level with this guy, I think.
He's a very hefty dude. In fact he even makes Berserker look a little skinny in the waist and limbs. And while he's quite the brute, height is not one of Classic's strong suits; put a little bend in his knees and he's not much taller than Dutch. But I'd rather have a hefty Predator than a tall and slender one. I think Hot Toys finally got the proportions of a Predator correct, even if he's out of scale with other 1:6 figures.
The base is surprisingly large; in fact I was taken back when I first took it out of the box. And the details are fantastic. The large animal skull looks superb, and the texturing on the animal hide is so good I was surprised it was actually plastic. One place where Hot Toys skimped though is on the sticks that hold the hide up; if you compare them to the prototype photos, you may feel a little jipped. But the rest of the base definitely makes up for it.
What impresses me most about the figure is the skin paint. The care that was taken in application, the blending, and the colors are so well done you'll swear they accidentally sent you their prototype. It even has a wet look to it, something Hot Toys has neglected to do on past Predators. Put alongside the 2008 Predator, you'd swear Classic cost twice as much. Hot Toys has really upped their game in the paint apps.
I feel this Predator suffers a bit from an identity crisis. Switching between the open and closed mandibles makes him feel like two completely different characters to me. The open mandibles are very much P1, although a bit too big-mouthed cinamaquette looking for my tastes. Attach the closed ones, and it's something that looks kind of like Classic and nothing like P1. It's still very cool looking with the closed mandibles, but likeness is definitely off.
Both helmets are really superb. Hot Toys has come a long way since that monstrosity of a helmet they included in the 2008 release. I don't see anyone needing to buy some expensive custom helmet this time. He looks really great with either helmet, and I'm so glad they included both. One complaint about the visors though; I think they could do a lot better. Thank God they didn't leave the eyes silver like the Taiwan release or flat black like the prototype, but why not an actual mesh insert? In good lighting, the painted visor kind of cheapens the look of the figure.
The metal blades, light-up holograms and different hands are all great. Although the swap-out computer terminal that allows for the holograms to be plugged in doesn't snap shut on my figure. I have to have him hold it shut with his pointer finger from the other hand to keep it from flopping open. Not really a big deal though, as I doubt I'll display him with the holograms outside of taking photos as they don't really look good when they're not illuminated.
One thing that initially disappointed me was the body armor. It's quite plastic looking and rather sparse in places. I think Hot Toys could do a better job of replicating a metallic look, although I realize it's not supposed to be shiny. It takes away from the very realistic and well-painted skin to have armor that's comparatively plastic and cheap-looking. That said though, the armor actually photographs
really well, reflecting light in all the right places, so I'm not as bothered by it as I initially was.
Bottom line, if a person only had one Predator in their Hot Toys collection, this would be the only one you'd need. It's in a whole new league of figure in terms of production, and he's got great personality and attitude. No bone trophies or P1 conversion kits required.
More photos to come!
