I agree with Khev on this one. Also, the fact that it actually bursts out of her in the theatrical cut was kinda cruel. Wasn't bad enough that she got facehugged and had to end her own life, but she wasn't even spared the actual chestburst either? *********.

Thankfully the most recent blu-ray release had the actors do ADR over the distorted scenes. My only gripe with it now is that it doesn't show the chestburster emerging and Ripley holding it close. That's the one area where the original excels. She probably holds it in place for a practical reason -- to make sure it dies with her -- but in a way it also feels like she is coming full circle, accepting her fate to the point of literally embracing it.

I really ought to watch it again, now that we're talking about it. The assembly cut is so interesting. Lots more time spent with the prisoners, getting a feel for their relationships and tensions with each other, plus them actually trapping the beast and having Golic set it free. I mean, WHOA. That was a big plot point to have taken out and I'm glad we get to see it placed back in.
The intro with Clemens doing his morning walk is also very cool. Definitely sets the darker, more gothic, more dramatic tone of the film in motion. From the very beginning, it's clear this has a different flavor than the previous films, yet it works so well IMO.

Interesting. I thought one of the best aspects of the work print was that you DON'T see the queen chestburster emerge. Because then it immediately begged the question, "could she have gone back to the ship and had it removed?"

In the theatrical cut you know there was not enough time for her to follow Bishop II back to the ship, the thing was only a minute from coming out of her. Her death was inevitable and jumping into the fire had no bearing on her own survival. It was the "correct" decision in every way.

But her suicide in the work print is a truly noble act AND a massive "**** you" to the company as she truly throws away her own chance at survival just to ensure that they don't get the animal inside her.

Hmm... good point. Kind of takes away the point of giving Ripley a choice if she was only minutes away from dying. I hadn't thought of it that way.

That is exactly what I thought the first time I watched the film.... I could not believe what they put Ripley through. Kill her new family, put her biggest fear in her body, and then have it burst out after she goes to commit suicide... Not to mention how silly I thought it looked that she held it almost like a child...


Having said that, just want to go on record that I like this film and think that it has aged very well.

Love the Alien designs in both A3 AND AR. Definitley my faves (my Son's too).

I liked the A:R Aliens personally, it was the AVP:R designs that made me barf the most.

There's only one ALIEN film.

Then there's a solid action thriller that draws inspiration from ALIEN.

Then there's an awesome psychological thriller that's using ALIEN as a plot devise.

Then nothing.

Agreed on all counts. Much like with T2, Aliens doesn't hold as much weight to me as much as Alien does nowadays.

Now in my early 40’s (41), I find myself enjoying Alien 3 assembly cut (Not Theatrical) over Aliens. Aliens is a great entertaining movie, but I enjoy the set, look pace of A3 AC now. IMO the true sequel to ALIEN. As great a picture ALIENS is (hands down) it was the downfall for Xenomorphs making them “Shoot en um” creatures rather than hide in the shadow’s mysterious beings!!

There's too many of them, and having them getting killed fairly easily over and over just removed any kind of fear of them.
