How the eff didn't I see that last night? I blame the booze...
My question: will they be refunding money to the 5 users of Playstation Plus?
I watched through some of the media briefing. I thought Sony CEO-to be Kaz Hirai did a good job in calming the storm, somewhat. I don't think they could've done any better, considering the circumstances. Kaz did take full accountability of this issue, and they admitted that the security in place was insufficient.
Network security will be improved, as well as communication to consumers moving forward. They understand and acknowledged the importance of regaining the trust of PS customers. Sony is not merely brushing this issue under the rug and allowing it to be forgotten. Also, the execs bowed like 3 times to apologize.
For compensation, Plasystation Plus will be free for a month and they've announced that angood amount of freebies will be made available.
So Sony, who has lost tons of money while the network has been down, has lost a ton of credibility, will give more money away in freebies while the crooks who actually did this go completely unpunished? That is so wrong on so many levels my head is spinning. Yes, Sony could have had better security, but it's not their fault this happened...it's the hacker's fault. I feel really bad for Sony in all of this.

Actually, Sony themselves have admitted it was their fault for not having better security measures. I know what you're saying, but Sony is not the victim here. They're going to pay dearly, but it is their own fault this was possible in the first place and they know it. Hopefully, the people who did this will get busted, but I can't feel even a little sorry for Sony.
Something like would have happened inevitably at some point, or another. The entire ordeal is a lesson learned, not only for Sony, but for other companies as well. I'm sure that in light of this, Nintendo and Microsoft are busy reviewing their own security protocols, and making necessary changes in order to make their respected networks more secure.
Sony admitted their fault, they apologized, and they're even planning to compensate millions of their customers (via. virtual downloads), despite already suffering major losses in stocks. What's done is done, and they're willing to pay for it out of their own pocket. I mean, if this isn't good enough for you, what sort of apology would you want from them?

None. I don't accept their apology. Most people will and that's their choice, but I won't. It wasn't just the lazy protection, but the attempt to cover up the breach that I won't forget about. They had lousy protection in place and then further put our info at risk by trying to cover up the breach and delaying the info. Unacceptable. They're giving away free stuff because they have to. They've lost a ton of good will and credibility and they understand that they have no choice but to kiss major a$$ for a while before many will even think of supporting them again. You're ready to forgive and that's fine, but I'll need proof that they deserve my support again and that's only going to take time.

Sorry but this is no way their own fault. Think of a small business owner who owns a food store.. He cant afford a fancy security system and just has a simple deadbolt. One night some guys break into his store and steal 5000 dollars worth of food. Is it his fault they broke in? Is it his fault that he couldnt afford a better security system? I'm sorry but the blame has to go to the people who did this...not sony. Our country is so scared to offend anyone who might be seen as guilty. An innocentcompany gets hacked and all of a sudden its their fault and need to give away millions of dollars of software to make ammends. Sorry but i find that ____ed up beyond belief.
Sony isn't a small business. I'm blaming both parties--the people that did this, and Sony for trying to cover it up. If Sony could've gotten away without admitting anything I have no doubt in my mind that they would've swept the entire incident under the rug and gone about their day same as usual.
