here's where it starts to get interesting...

Wikipedia History Timeline on SOE

"On March 31, 2011, SOE has confirmed that "it will eliminate 205 positions and close its Denver, Seattle and Tucson studios." Production of The Agency has also been discontinued.

On April 27, 2011, Sony, the parent company of SOE, released statements regarding an intrusion, on or about April 18th, into the PlayStation Network, and the potential theft of up to 77 Million subscribers personal data. Sony maintains that PSN and SOE are hosted and run on completely separate subsystems and that the PlayStation Network intrusion had no major affect on SOE's online services.

On May 2, 2011, SOE completely interrupted their online services. Over the previous month several intrusions of PSN have caused the developers to post messages of concern and apology, but also assurances the SOE servers and systems were not compromised. This most recent development has shut the service down entirely with the message: "We have had to take the SOE service down temporarily. In the course of our investigation into the intrusion into our systems we have discovered an issue that warrants enough concern for us to take the service down effective immediately. We will provide an update later today (Monday)."

so, Sony cans over 1/3 of their PSN division devs with access to crypto-hash function info used for passwords and whitelist server access... and less than a month later - bam. might turn out to be an inside job rather than hackers with nothing better to do. this just keeps getting better.

Wow. That's some crazy ____. Definitely going to hurt future PS4 sales as well as the future of PSN. I know for a fact I'll continue to use it for playing online, but I'm absolutely done with the PSN store.

Sent from the ice planet Hoth on my fancy iPhone.

Good thing i use the 360 for all my online gaming ....i only use the ps3 for single player games.

Well, I know that I'll still keep my credit card attached to my account. But, you guys are right, this is going to hurt their sales significantly.

bit tired of not being able to access netflix. i just want to watch some family guy darn it... come on psn.

i kinda doubt XBL is much less susceptible to what happened on PSN. if it turns out it was done by employees, there isn't much MS could do to stop that. if it was just lazy security, MS isn't well known for keeping Windows much safer either. that's just kinda the chance you take when you leave your personal info in the hands of bloated complacent software companies. MS does in fact have a more sensible network structure than Sony's though. so, knock on wood...

Absence makes the online play grow fonder!

I'm looking forward to playing games i havent played in a while as i havent been able to.

this is just an other example of why Xbox 360 is way better.:lecture

Really.... Really??? At least sony released a product that didnt completely brick up on its users, i paid for two 360's before deciding... ____ 'em there not taking anymore of my money, PSN may be down for a bit but at least i got my SP games and a butt load of excellent exclusives to play!

I dont recall people abandoning microsoft when their entire console failed on them, this is minuscule compared to the travesty of the Red Rings of Death, the CC info possibly being stolen is alot of "ifs and buts", no facts!

Giving info online is never secure, i mean i havent used myspace in years they have my name and probably address, i had to sign up to websites in order to buy something and never used the site again, i bet i've forgotten a bunch on websites/sevices that have my info, its mainly telemarketing that i hate, companies sell you information to other companies for them to ring you an pester you about switching your phone or internet provider to them, THAT SHOULD BE ILLEGAL!!!

Uhmmm you can still access netflix. If it doesnt work initially, just let it sit there ... after about a few minutes your good to go ;) Been watching netflix all throughout.

Just FYI - I thought PSN being down = no Netflix. Not so. Just launch Netflix, hit sign in, it will fail, then try again and it will fail, after the second (or maybe third?) try, you'll be able to get in to Netflix. This tip courtesy of my 8 y/o who schooled me yesterday when I said I'd need to hook the laptop to the TV for Netflix while PSN was down.

Well, I haven't even been able to sign in on the net. Still says it's temporarily down for me. So I doubt anything is back up on the ps3 for me either.

man ! i am so sick and tierd of people bashing sony for these.

I own both consoles. bought ps3 lauch and i have never had an issue with it.
I bet you the hacker is some nerd kid mega xboxfan that wanted to see them fall.

I do not want to be that kid when he's door get's busted by the FBI tactical team and will go to jail forever. I would pay to see that happend.

I hope they catch the little prick.

all the consoles have there advatages. there is no better one.

PS3 has Blu ray and 3D but the comunication online sucks.
Xbox has no Blu ray wich is a major downfall, the xbox live is awsome for all the multiplayer stuff but I berly use it and I am paying for it.

You shouldn't be, their weak security is what made this all possible. As a sysadmin, if my network were ever compromised like this, I'd be out a job, and rightfully so.

Sure, the hackers are the criminals, but Sony is the moron, and not completely blameless.

I'm sure that some folks got fired for this. More specifically, those who were put in charge of the PSN's network security. :dunno
