Then everyone would cry bait and switch again.

Too bad they don't give you the 'unpainted head' option.

Why would that be a good idea? The prototypes are already too good in comparison with the production versions.

If the ANH Han shown the preview pic sports a better paint app than the production version... well, I don't even want to think about it. :monkey4

Not of late actually, I'd argue that. Bespin Luke and ANH Leia both look much better in the final product than the proto paint apps.

Maybe, but my point is that the prototype should look as close to the production figure as possible. Not markedly better, and of course not worse either.

An understandable point, but with any of these companies, there is a tendency for some discrepency between the initial images and final product at times. Hot Toys have previewed figures before and paint apps have varied. Bottom line for me, unless the proto job can be completely replicated and it doesn't seem to be possible, then I'd rather have so-so prototypes and stellar production pieces. I'm glad Luke and Leia both turned out better, beats episodes like Faramir.

True. Let's just hope this goes for Old Ben too. I don't ever want to see another Faramir or Yavin Luke paint app ever again.

I can't get behind the worse-proto-than-production argument. The prototype at the least can show the potential for the likeness. And even if the production piece is not as good. At least we know what is possible if we choose to change it ourselves. Now, I want my production piece to be as good as the proto like everyone else does. But realistically, the protos are done free-hand and the production ones are done by masking. I think it should be possible to get the production close to as good as the proto. But saying that it should be better is like saying a machine would do a better job than say...darkartist81. Just ain't gonna happen. Making the proto look it's best is critical and I am willing to bet that there is talk, more than once in a while, at Sideshow, about how much some of the customizers on these (and other) boards could do for them.

Edit - And that is not to say that Sideshow's current prototype painters can't cut it...there have been some EXCELLENT proto paints.

Then there has been Han Solo: Smuggler (sorry whoever the proto-painter was).

And all this is from the guy who isn't even supposed to care about the likeness matching the actor. I do have to admit that it is a nice (but still not necessary to me) bonus when it happens.

I would also love for Sideshow to sell non-painted portraits. I want to learn, but I can't bring myself to paint over their paint apps, good or not-so-good.

I just can't agree with that. We're ordering something months in advance based solely on the pictures that we are provided of the piece. I don't think it's crazy to suggest that they look like what you actually get when you open the box. People around here do things like commissioning repaints and the like, but I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of people just leave them the way they are from the factory. I have no problem with Sideshow showing the unpainted sculpt as they have done here to show what is there for people who want to repaint them, but frankly it seems very close to false advertising to have a prototype that is totally different from the actual thing you are buying.

It seems to me that you are not accounting for the difference in how these things are produced. The prototypes are each hand done. If the production items were hand done by the same artists, I would say yes, they should be at the very least DARN close. But you are expecting a masked paint job to be exactly (or close to) a hand painted artist's rendition. I might be mis-understanding what you mean, but that seems almost unreasonable to me. Assembly line production of of a piece of hand-made art just does not work that way. It is not possible. That would be like saying that a paint-by-numbers "Mona Lisa" should look exactly like the original.
