Yea, I have to agree. I regret saying that's it's not off to the start that I was hoping for. At first glance there are several things that I see throwing it off: the frown lines are spread a little wide; the bottoms could be moved a little closer to his mouth so they are a little more vertical. The eyes aren't far enough apart. Also the shape may be off but that could be part of the expression; actually the shape of his head from temple to temple could be a little wider. The nose could be shapped a little better as well as the bridge. There should be a small space between the 'stache and the nose.

It's the mouth and chin throwing it off. Top half is getting there.

Needs serious work.

I feel the opposite way. I think the lower portion is closer to the mark but from the 'stache up is where all the issues are. The shape of the face between the temples could be wider and the eyes more spread apart. The bridge of the nose could be smoothed out too unless that crinkle is part of the expression

I do agree on one thing though... A lot of changes are necessary :(

Yes Pop, the underlying facial structure is off and sadly he's already putting in detail. If the likeness isn't solid before texture and hair details it ain't ever going to be there. Unfortunately, I think it needs a complete redo rather than trying to tweak one aspect or another. In it's current shape, it's so far off it almost makes me regret getting Vince. I think this one is as weak as his Dexter. :(

Whoops maybe I spoke too soon haha. As other people have said you can tell its supposed to be Sam Jackson but it isn't quite there yet. I have confidence the changes that are necessary will be made!

I think you'll have no problem offloading Vince if you feel that you need to.

I think it could be tweaked, but don't think it's as bad as the rest of you are suggesting. Clearly is Sam Jackson here. And of course, we've only got one shot from one angle. From what I can see, I dig it as-is, but would welcome any improvements of course.

That is not Jules, please don't tell me that's Jules. Those bags under the eyes and the sideburns should have more of a kink/curly hair pattern to it. The gotee is way to thick and Jules didnt have a shape up that sharp.

This seriously needs work.

The sideburns are way too sharp. Said it in my prior post, and his sideburns are way too stylized. They need to be more messier, curly and have that typical african-american style to it. The hair on the face needs some serious work. SOMEONE -- please relay this to rainman... IMMEDIATELY.

Lee was up until 4 in the morning.
I told him to post the non-photoshopped pic before everybody goes into a panic. :lol

I think it looks great for his first WIP. Rainman did want to go with the wig. I wonder if he wanted to do the sideburns too.

Not sure how your going to pull that messy sideburns and mustache look if he goes sculpted.

But he's giving us what he asked for. :dunno :monkey1

He's off to bed. He was up until 4am sculpting this. Not sure how much sleep he gets or if he sleeps, but I'm guessing we won't hear from him for at least the next 5-8 hours.

This sculpt is panic mode, I sincerely hope Rainman revises this. It's way off. Even the shape of the facial featured eyes etc are wrong.

Man this is not looking good. I say that as a sincere fan/collector of Rainmans work.
I hope he looks at this again with fresh eyes.

My thoughts exactly...was going to post exact thing...I don't see how u get messy frizzle look with sculpted hair...and even if it is achieved, judging from film, you can clearly see shadows casting off his face from curls, that the curls would need to be away from face quiet a bit...how does that then guard against breaking and making this sculpt fragile? Which would then I'd imagine start another debate. I think it's either sculpted hair and we get somewhat close to look or wig and get closer, more accurate look. Just my opinion of course.

Those curls can be sculpted. I've seen crude sculpt jobs that look decent, so a master sculptor would have considered that. You wnot have that extra fuzz hanging from the goatee but the Kink/Curley hair should have been sculpted. That's way to straight and sharp. It looks a little like Sam Jackson Shaft.

Wait, I thought sculpted hair was semi confirmed. Was that just a guess?

For the longevity of the figure, sculpted is really the way to go...

I though the messier facial hair would be something that would be better realized with a combo of paintwork and sculpting rather than just straight up sculpting, facial hair that isn't as thick like Jules seems a very hard thing to sculpt accurately

The hair is the last thing we should be interested in at this point. It's like focusing on what windows to install on a house under construction when the foundation is a mess. A likeness should be solid long before hair and skin texture are added and this one is off in many ways. I'm not sure this sculpt can be salvaged. Cheeks, eyes, nose, jaw all look off or misaligned to me. Trevor Grove's first attempt at Nathan Fillion was a closer likeness than this and he threw it away to start fresh and ended up with a much better version for #2.

Again, I generally love Rainman's work but for his first AA portrait I'm not impressed.
