Re: Rainmans New Project: 'No Country Killer'

Not really it doesnt work in that thought... Im a big Bateman fan, becuase honestly I find him hilarious... with Dexter there is a sense of justification in his killing, Bickle - justification there too... and Anton... well little justification, but thats why people like a game like Hitman...

I think the fact that Mick and Mal are actually based loosely on real characters makes the so called fictional part along with the redeeming quality in them missing, the sense of justice has been served eludes the viewers... therefore lionizing them enough to want a figure somewhat gets on the backseat.

Personally I always hoped they'd get shot or something by the end of the film... so in a way to serve 'justice' but thats just my reasoning why these characters are not 'loved' by a larger audience as say characters like Bateman, Bickle or even Anton is...

an interesting take, personally, for me it's just that NBK is nowhere near the calibur of film as Taxi Driver, AP or No country. Nor does woody compare to Christian, Robert or Javier as an actor.

The characters arnt near as complex or compelling either in my opinion. I do think killers is a good film as well, just not on the same level as the others mentioned
Well the connections between those characters are that they are film/TV characters, and are stylized interpretations of psychopaths. And those seem to be getting a lot of attention in the custom community nowadays for whatever reason. But sure, they are different in different ways, and some share similarities that others don't. In my opinion, Anton's reasons for murder are no more defensible than those of Mickey and Mallory. And of course, Anton does not receive justice. Nor does Bateman. I personally think Dexter is a decent show, but nothing great. On artistic merit I would rank NBK higher than American Psycho. But this is all pretty subjective. My understanding is that NBK is extremely loosely based off of an actual couple.

Re: Rainmans New Project: 'No Country Killer'

i'm not sure which couple you are referring to when you say mickey and mallory were in some way real people, unless you might mean charles starkweather and caril fugate. but they were really more directly the inspiration for malick's Badlands (another excellent film) than mickey and mallory ever were. i think m&m were really more an amalgamation of the bonnie and clyde type than any actual people.
also, the 'villain' of the piece is without a doubt the media who sensationalize and make darlings out of demented subjects--and if it's a sense of the fair hand of justice in the end you're seeking, then NBK certainly delivers on that front, with the sentence carried out on Downey Jr's character.
but, just like American Psycho, NBK is a satire. and one that's darkly comic in tone. perhaps, more jarring as it is told in a very 'in your face', almost documentary or 'cinema verite' style at times.
personally, i'm not such a dexter fan myself. love the concept but the execution is a little hammy and stereotypical for my taste and i stopped watching after the 3rd season.

Re: Rainmans New Project: 'No Country Killer'

Thank you sir. Well said.

All of those characters are near and dear to my heart :D. But those are the kind of characters/movies that I like the most. NBK & AP wrestle around with A Clockwork Orange for the top spots in my fave 5 of all time list. While the guys being mentioned here are up my alley, the only real similarity that they have is that they're all psychos and killers. But all have very different agendas and motives and all of their respective movies send very different messages. Bickle is more of a twisted hero than anything else. And like alexi said the big similarity between AP and NBK is that they are both dark satires; but both are parodies of completely different subjects.

Never seen Primal Fear?!?! :horror

You will fall in love with that movie. Primal Fear in my opinion put Edward Norton on the map and American History X only solidified him as an amazing actor.

Must watch bro.

On a rainy day I'd watch Primal fear. Wait for a Sunday Morning when your relaxed around the house and have some time to burn, to watch GBU. You gotta be on the up and up to watch GBU. Primal Fear is the way to go man.

You'll thank me later

Re: Rainmans New Project: 'No Country Killer'

And I should add a disclaimer that I am not against looney killer types. . .just not so much the type that iminime, Rainman, et al. have recently been focused on. Would love to have these guys on the shelf:

I like Primal Fear a'aight, but it really succeeds due to the way the story culminates more than anything else.

Re: Rainmans New Project: 'No Country Killer'

oh and army, what about 'Days of Heaven'? that's a great flick with gere in it. not that i'm such a gere fan at all. actually that may be the only one really. though norton is superb in primal fear.

Never watched it.

Anything with Gere on it turns me off. I almost didnt want to watch Primal Fear until someone convinced me to watch it.

Re: Rainmans New Project: 'No Country Killer'

it's a terrence malick flick. and its really sick. about this trio on the lamb who find work on a wheat farm in texas the owner of which is sick and lonely and when he offers marriage to the chick it gets tragic. but the cinematography is really some of the best ive seen. you kind of have to be into malick tho or you might not dig it.
