Rory, we have pretty similar tastes in music. If you want any ska/punk references, please let me know and I'll give you a good list.
Yeah Wale is dope and I love Madlib's alter ego Quasimoto. Its good to know someone else with some good musical taste, I just found a guy called Walle he just released a mix tape about nothing sampling Seinfeld the tv show it worth a listen, even Kanye West while mainstream is good how about Lord Quasimoto and the Unseen? any one heard of him?
Atmosphere!!What do you guys think about this... it's pretty interesting. I think I like it.

Well said man, what you've been on the search for is Underground Hip-Hop and I believe your quest is over. Stick with me and I'll put you on to a whole bunch of good ^^^^.Most of the popular stuff out there can't be listened to. I think when a rapper can transcend past the cliches of the genre then something worth listening to is created.
When most hip hop songs are filled with drug dealing, sexual conquests, and extraneous violence i lose interest quickly. I have been looking for philosophical and introverted hip hop. While I know thug life is real and people are getting shot at I think there's more to the story and it could definitely be phrased more cleverly and intellectually in a song.
There's also...
Digable Planet
Brother Ali
Blu
Royce Da 5'9
Wordsmith
Nappy Roots
Hip-Hop Legends, one of my all time favorites...old school but still good = A Tribe called Quest
Rory, here are a list of ska/punk bands that I like. You listed a couple of my favs already. Some of these are pretty obvious but I figured I'd give you what I have and you can go from there.
Operation Ivy (greatest band in the history of the world) Tim Armstrong (my God) first band
Rancid (need I say more)
Suicide Machines (especially Destruction by Definition - second fav album of all time)
Catch 22 (Keasby Nights is possibly #3 on my album list)
Big D and the Kids Table - just great ska/punk. A lot of reggae influences throughout
Reel Big Fish (kinda popular but still pretty good)
LTJ - the earlier the better
Buck-O-Nine
The Toasters
Time Again
The Specials (one of the first big ska bands)
:chew:chew:chew:chew:chew
You forgot "The Pie Tasters." Strapped Live album is excellent. Their studio recorded stuff not as good.
Edit: I thought they may be a Wash DC band too, or maybe Florida.
Also easily one of my all time favorite groups. My favorite rap: De La Soul
How could I forget them and yes, local DC band
Seen them a few times live. Great show. A little more ska than punk but still a hellava show
