Wow Jen, never figured you for Gangsta stuff, although some of the earlier stuff is really good, particularly N.W.A., Ice Cube and Dre & Snoop. My personal favorites were:
2Pac
Ice Cube
Dr. Dre (he does like to talk about the chronic - but his stuff is clever with good beats)
Public Enemy
The Roots...
...There were a couple soundtracks that had some good stuff too like, Do the Right Thing, Boyz in the Hood, and Menace II Society....I mean some of it is talking about gangsta stuff...but that is the environment that they are in and it is usually talking about how f'd up it is.
i stopped listening to hip hop a long time ago because it had become popular for all the wrong reasons. i miss how it was in the 80s where it felt more of the artists had something to say. anyway, i still listen to a lot of public enemy (even if i don't agree with everything that's said), blackstar and mos def.
have you tried tricky? not so political, but quite poetic. not sure about his recent albums, but his earlier stuff was pioneering, and some of his tracks were just beautiful.

Public Enemy though is one of my All-Time favorite groups, they came with a message and awesome music to spread it. You had the militant leader in Chuck D and the clown in Flavor Flav, they complimented each other perfectly.
How about a little Joaquin Phoenix? https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/film/news/e3i989acc6090241ec6ca07cef669efc87a
