My personal favorites were:
2Pac
Ice Cube
Dr. Dre (he does like to talk about the chronic - but his stuff is clever with good beats)
Public Enemy
The Roots
Eminem  i love his stuff :lol

There were a couple soundtracks that had some good stuff too like, Do the Right Thing, Boyz in the Hood, and Menace II Society....I mean some of it is talking about gangsta stuff...but that is the environment that they are in and it is usually talking about how f'd up it is.

listen to the WU TANG CLAN.

Wow Jen, never figured you for Gangsta stuff, although some of the earlier stuff is really good, particularly N.W.A., Ice Cube and Dre & Snoop.

Public Enemy though is one of my All-Time favorite groups, they came with a message and awesome music to spread it. You had the militant leader in Chuck D and the clown in Flavor Flav, they complimented each other perfectly. :rock

i stopped listening to hip hop a long time ago because it had become popular for all the wrong reasons. i miss how it was in the 80s where it felt more of the artists had something to say. anyway, i still listen to a lot of public enemy (even if i don't agree with everything that's said), blackstar and mos def.

have you tried tricky? not so political, but quite poetic. not sure about his recent albums, but his earlier stuff was pioneering, and some of his tracks were just beautiful.

Some, I suppose very little rap I find OK.. More annoying to me are the people that listen to it.. Most annoying are the white boys that try to dress and talk like they grew up in the hood.

If you are looking for Hip Hop that has some meaning look no further than Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5. The songs that come to mind first are the Message - about inner city living, and White Lines - about the evils of Cocaine. They're all well known songs. Check 'em out

The Message

I got into that genre of music in the late 80's through the early 90's. I really liked N.W.A. too and had most of Snoop's albums....along with Eric B. and Rakim, LL Cool J, Beastie Boys, Run DMC, Sugar hill Gang, Slick Rick, etc..... There was this one group...called The Click (I think)...had an early demo tape of their's...that stuff was tha bomb! It was soooo damn good....they never made it big though and I lost the tape. :(

As soon as it became more mainstream I found myself listening to what was then considered alternative: Mother Love Bone, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, etc.....then they became mainstream.... :lol
