Just go in with an open mind (as we should for every movie anyway) and forget that it's an animation.

The Incredibles. 9/10.
Gotcha. :)

Oblivion -- 8 / 10

Man, I loved this movie. Call Tom what you will (& I'd agree for the most part), but he's a great actor, & one of my faves - even though I've not seen the majority of his earlier soppy, schlocky, jocky crap movies. He's done some excellent work in the last 20 years.

There are some nitpicks regarding the story, but overall; the tone, the look, feel, tech, art design, cinematography, score, soundtrack - all that's a 10 really. It didn't help that I watched an inferior copy, but it doesn't matter.

I'm buying it.

Yup, the guy is a weirdo. But he can sure as hell entertain. And that's what makes him great imo.

While Tom Cruise is entertaining to watch and has a lot of Charisma, I dont think I'd call him a good actor. Every movie I've seen him in, I come away feeling I just saw Cruise being Cruise, rather than acting tfit the role, the role was merely adjusted to fit his personality.

A really great actor disappears into the character, and sometimes you forget that actor is playing him. I've never felt that way watching Cruise.

Except that even though you're always watching Cruise you're still watching him emote in the most genuine of manners. Yes he always has the same basic personality but you always believe that Cruise himself is truly inhabiting whatever world is appearing on screen. And that IS the mark of a very good actor, IMO.

I expect actors to do one of two things:

1. Portray a different persona

2. Be very authentic in the same persona

Guys like Cruise, Gibson, Ford, SLJ, Pitt, etc., do a great job with the second one.

The Mummy Trilogy 1-3: 7/10

Van Helsing: 7/10

Bloodsport: 8/10

Planet of the Apes Collection 1968-1973: 9/10

Tusk: 2/10

Dracula Untold: 7/10

It's not really as shocking as it's made out to be. I'd even say that the gore is no worse than the films of Tarantino or even Chan Wook-Park's Vengenace Trilogy. If you're not familiar with recent Serbian history then the allusion is going to be a bit lost on you.

I've seen those and it's not really the same IMO. Is there really a reason to have a movie where
women get beaten and raped, raped and beheaded while he continues, the baby scene, the incest scene, etc ? I have to question the mental health of anyone making or even liking such a movie :cuckoo:

I wouldn't put Pitt in the secondary category at all. Snatch, 12 Monkeys, Burn After Reading, Se7en, Tree of Life, Assassination of Jesse James, Benjamin Button, Inglorious Basterds, Babel, Fight Club etc... All great performances, each character is completely different from the other.

Pitt is the best of the bunch that I listed at extending beyond his own basic personality (especially with Snatch) but I still feel like I'm just watching him. Who knows, maybe I'm not giving him enough credit.

Haven't seen the whole film myself yet, but after reading some interviews with the director and lead actor, it does seem to be making a statement about the realities of life in modern-day Serbia. I think it's one of those things where you need some understanding of the context to appreciate the message they're driving at.

That might be, but check it out on Youtube and then let me know what you think lol

Enjoyed Oblivion as well. His co-stars were fun to watch too. 7.5/10.

To me, constantly and consistantly giving a performance (however sincere it might come off as) in the same persona, is not acting. It's really just Cruise being Cruise, however likeable he may be.

Pitt can embody different characters well enough, SLJ was quite different in Jungle Fever and Ford has given us a taste in Mosquito Coast of what he is capable of. But doing the same thing over and over is more akin to being a one trick pony. However much we might like the "Tom Cruise character", it's not acting if it's all he ever does.

One trick pony to me sounds like Keanu Reeves.

In my book, the closest Cruise ever came to "acting" was Magnolia, for me, I have to be in the right mood to see that performance, as sometimes it comes off as hammy and the weakest part of the movie, and other times (less often) it works.
