Unbreakable (2000) 7/10

Good movie. I appreciated the simplicity of the story - especially since I've caught the GoT fever and started binge-watching all the seasons - but at times the scenes felt like the actors were caught in molasses. Long pauses in dialogue coupled with slow head movements for added effect only works for so many times; it shouldn't be used for the whole movie! Samuel Jackson's character salvaged my interest for this movie.

Resident Evil: Extinction.

2/10: and 1 of those is for Mila cause I have a crush on her.

Total crap.

I also watched Drive for the first time a few weeks ago. I'd give it maybe a 7 or 7.5 and that's mostly because of the cast and the artsy/moody tone throughout. Otherwise the film didn't really grab me and I fail to see what the fuss was all about.

There are a few videos analysis of the film on youtube.

This is a pretty good video.

Yes and it echoes my own analysis, I just come to a different conclusion. Shot composition, color choice, and symbolism = very well done. But I need more than that. As George Lucas once said "A special effect without a story is a pretty boring thing." And the same can be said with regard to the other elements listed above. Sure Drive has those things in spades, and presents them very well, but like Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut before it ultimately falls flat without a more captivating story and characters.

:lol

Yes I wouldn't begrudge anyone for loving Drive. I just felt it needed a little more than artsy camera tricks.

I love Drive

John Wick Chapter 2 9/10 honestly this is one of the finest sequels I have ever seen. I was against them making sequels because I thought the first was a perfect little standalone revenge film. I am so glad to be proven completely wrong. And the ending made me wish the third was being filmed right now because I need to find out what happens next.

The Right Stuff: 7.5/10

Nice compromise between sentimentality/patriotism, and a realistic look at the human beings who were involved in the early days of the space race, as well as the great Chuck Yeager. These men really did have brass balls.

Lost in Space (1998) - 5.5/10

I totally forgot that this movie had a "bullet time" scene (when they engage the warp drive) a full year before The Matrix. Some of the effects still hold up today, others (like the little monkey guy) are just atrocious. It's clear that (like The Fifth Element) they were trying to steal the thunder from the imminent return of Star Wars but were only able to succeed in making a marginal "Sunday afternoon" movie.

The Graduate (1967) - 7.5/10

Weird to watch this film and realize that I'm 6 years older than the cougar in the movie. Though I know that the 36 year old Bancroft was supposed to be playing a woman in her 40's. Very watchable from beginning to end, though Hoffman's Benjamin did come across quite creepy by the end of the film.

These Final Hours (2014) - 6.5/10

Depressing but visceral journey. The daughter from The Nice Guys turns in another fine performance.

Patriot's Day - 9/10

Depressing but visceral (yes I'm copying Khev's words, they apply here too) account of the 2013 Boston marathon bombings and subsequent terrorist manhunt.
